It is undoubtedly great news for County, the two seem a great match, but I do think the fact Jones is still at County backs my opinion up regarding work rate and attitude, because talent wise he is above and beyond the club he is at.

Did any respectful bids come in for him in the summer?

We definitely turned some down, but I don’t know who from.

I think his past injuries are probably still more of a reason than that to be honest. He can be a bit temperamental and get in a mood when he’s getting booted (which does happen a lot), but nothing particularly stands out. He definitely lost his head at FM last season, but that kind of thing has happened to better players in one off games. We’ve become a good home for that kind of player anyway - he’s certainly no more mercurial than Rodrigues was and he’s playing well in the Championship now. We got a great year out of Bostock, and Crowley is pretty similar. Just got to have the right balance around them which the early signs are we have more of this year.

Well that's one way to look at it I suppose.

As my fellow Notts fans have rightly highlighted the season ending/season missing injuries he's suffered in the past is obviously the major factor. We took a gamble on this and it's paid off in spades. He's happy, he's absolutely loved by the fans naturally and I believe just started a family. I guess when viewed against those dark days when on crutches for months and unable to play for entire seasons not too long ago he's probably more grateful than most to have security and happiness. If he's got a release clause in there then that provides the flexibility and ambition

You are right Conks when you say that's it's a great match. He suits our stylish playing style and passing heavy approach and he gets to be a luxury player that doesn't have to do that defending much.

Pint of Mansfield Bitter anyone?

Keeping hold of your best players isn’t for everyone I suppose, even when they are in a higher league.

Heart says ‘class, club legend pendddinngggg…..’

Head says ‘he’ll obviously be sold at some point - probably next summer so we’ve secured ourselves a fee rather than him leaving on a free and in return he’s got a nice pay rise’

Either way, objectively good news

Bit of a weird one that, what have I got to be bitter about regarding Jones? Everyone else managed to respond properly. Just a genuine opinion no need to get defensive, it’s great news and business for County. We brought DKD for 25k and sold him for 800k, great business too, I bare zero bitterness towards him, never mind a local club/player in a lower division.

All fair points, it’s good news whichever way you look at it from County perspective, be interesting how it materialises in the summer if you are still in L2 but the worst case scenario is you benefit greatly financially.

I didn't view it as a bitter post at all but one that was clearly wide of the mark. Still all opinions count.

Great piece of business for Mansfield with DKD. I read that he was desperate to leave and move to Barnsley. Even with it being a club in the same division you can't blame him.

I have a mutual friend with DKD and I have it on good authority that he said the Barnsley Metrodome Waterpark was like Byron Bay compared to Mansfield

Also something about padelball courts but couldn’t make that bit out

Great news.
Jones loves it at Notts, feels the love of the fans and playing in a team with the style of play that suits him.

Jones having a bad attitude and not a high work rate is a bad take.

He's at this level because his knee has blown multiple times. Nothing else.

Ironically the player who is at L2 level with Notts because of work rate and a bad attitude, Crowley, is supposedly the one Mansfield bid for on deadline day

That's the beauty of football message boards you can basically form a theory or opinion on a player's ability, convince yourself it's true, make the statement based on one or two games. Conker kindly provided a perfect example.

Forget his well known injury history and 3 season long periods out injured concentrate on a temper tantrum and a crotch grab or was it's a mooning at Field Mill? That's the reason he's the best player in L2. :ffs:

You seemed to be basing your opinion of him off one game last season where he was played on the wrong side ( the first time of many) and was getting kicked from pillar to post.

Admittedly his bottom lip hit the floor, but that’s the only time I’ve seen it happen. If he doesn’t end up playing much higher up, it won’t be because of his temperament.

The bigger factor for me was his work rate too, but admittedly I did discount about his injury record because to be fair he seemed to get by last season very well overall in that regards from what I recall. It’s very naive to discount someone who literally gave up for the entire second half when your team is only 1-0 down in a local derby mind. The fact he gave up was denied at the time on here, now the result is in the past and the wounds are healed it’s easier to admit.

I think the lack of serious interest in him is clearly injury related but I just think there’s more to that too, considering his form and minutes played last season. He is clearly capable to play higher and I expected a serious battle to keep him which never happened. It’s not silly to suggest a team would take him on after last season playing nearly every game while being brilliant is it?

Anyway, my post clearly invoked some passion considering several responses from pretty much every County fan on here, and I appreciate that, even from the more sensitive posters on this forum.

Post something silly and that wide of the mark expect responses from any set of fans even from less sensitive fanbases.

I seem to remember Jones not even being first choice under Williams in the NL promotion season. His appearances were always off the bench if at all weren't they?

I’m not sure but last season he ridiculously got over 20 assists and played in 43 out of 46 games. Some going, that many games in L2 on all those terrible winter pitches too, not bad for someone that was previously used to watching football in the stands.

Yeah - he pretty much hadn’t played a football game for more than four years at that point so we were pretty careful with him. You could tell he was good though, he changed the game off the bench in both play-off matches really.

Then after he signed permanently and got through a proper pre-season he just flew last year. Had broken the record for assists in an English league season by February.

He’s reached full hero status here, more so than Langstaff did even. Something about turning up pretty much retired due to injury and with a sob story about Karl Robinson being mean to him that you couldn’t help but get behind, then a stoppage time in extra time winner in a play-off semi-final, a perfect penalty at Wembley and one of the best individual seasons this league has surely ever seen. He’s just the kind of story that you end up falling for when it’s one of yours.

If you get another 40+ games out of him this season the injuries concern definitely doesn’t stand up anymore, I’m not sure it does right now after last season to be honest!

I get the story, look at Quinn with us, was ready to retire instead he’s now been here years, nearly 40 years old, one of the best assist per minutes in the country, scored the goal that sealed our promotion last season. Scored a beauty as we beat Barnsley in our opener in L1 too!

Fleck was class and still might be but the track record of classy midfielders who can’t run anymore dropping down to League 2 and thriving is basically non-existent
Jack Lester disagrees with this.
As does Wes Hoolahan.

Although he also says that Jack Lester was a striker or sub attacker.

Randomly Kevin MacDonald is back training with us after he left Bradford last month. It may just be to keep up his fitness but wouldn’t be surprised if we gave him a short term deal till January. I mean he’s old and his legs have gone but he’d maybe be handy as a backup option. At times his passing and creativity was excellent in his first spell a couple of years ago.

There’s past it and there’s past it and as much as I like him for helping out as caretaker last season, he’s beyond past it.

He was a great player but he looked like he needed a zimmer frame coming off the bench against us last season, truly the stiffest looking footballer I've ever seen.
