SSo who has the best ratio as a perentage of the population?

We may be bottom of this but we have 2 clubs averaging 22k and 20k who have won 1 league cup between them since 1936. Imo we are the best 2 supported clubs going who have basically never done fuck all in anyone's lifetime especially us.

Newcastle probably take that crown.

Newcastle probably take that crown.

1 club city similar size if we were both in the premier league our average would be touching 70k between us. They've had success in the 50s and challenged for league titles in the 90s fa cup runners up too on a few occasions plus European runs

The population is actually half of ours I didn't realise that however the surrounding area is huge

Yeah fair point on the European runs.

Sheffield Wednesday have actually won something more recently than Newcastle though and were also runners-up in cups in the 90s.

Yes Wednesday did have a decent spell early 90s. They only had 1 good league year though the geordies have had a few. We have had none we've had no cup runners up and we've never been in Europe. We average 20k in our 5th season finishing 11th in the 3rd tier there is only 1 club in Europe who attract more fans at this level.

All fair points.

Who's the other club in Europe out of interest?

Fair enough, thought it could only be a German side.

Don't see how 2,000 is a bad following to be fair, half of Walsalls home support.

Once in 15 year occasion potentially, 85 miles away on a Saturday afternoon when you took 3,400 to Port Vale the week before.

Daytrippers everywhere. I can handle it if people can't afford it, or there are family issues, or even people preferring to go to the home leg that can't for one reason or another make it. But there's at least 1000 potential fans yesterday that just sat at home thinking 'ah it's on TV, I'll kick back and watch it there'. As far as I'm concerned, those people should have been banned from any 2nd leg tickets/Wembley or been last in line.

Anything less than 2.5-3k was totally unacceptable, so 2,093 is a total shambles from the fans, when as I say, this is our 1st play-off season in 15 years+. God only knows what we would have taken if we were the unfortunate ones to get the midweek fixture away.

Expected more. Not being POTD knocked a few off no doubt but overall was disappointing not to reach at least 2.5k

Good noise though considering we were utter utter shite on the pitch

Well here she is, the old gal. The final table. I've had to improvise and provide estimates for some of Scunny's and a couple of Burton's followings at their grounds (indicated by the * and based on nothing more than a guestimate) but other than that, all the numbers have been taken from twitter, official club sites and from you mugs on here.
Thanks very much for everyone's help and for making the thread a bastion for nerds who like to talk attendances.

24brihi.jpg

A few quick snippets from the season:

Largest average away followings: 1st: Sheff United - 1,645 2nd: Bradford - 1,489 3rd: Coventry - 1,347

Largest away following: 1st: Barnsley at Wigan - 4,770 2nd: Sheff United at Barnsley - 3,939 3rd: Bradford at Sheff United - 3,886

Largest increase/decrease from last season: 1st: Bradford +429 2nd: Walsall +417 3rd: Chesterfield -366

Not going to do smallest followings as a. it'd be unfair on Fleetwood and b. anyone that follows their club up and down the country deserves a pat on the back rather than ridicule (except when it's a big club taking crap numbers somewhere fairly local).

Feel free to post the table on your respective forums/twitter etc. should you wish. Thanks again and see you next season (if we don't go up) :D

Good effort pal. Ours is pretty standard for another standard shite season. Yours is good considering your form til January. Wigans is shit considering how massive they are. Cov decent and Bradford decent. Fair play to millwall and southend a lot of travelling for them. But my vote for the best considering the size of club and the awful season they had goes to Oldham, fair play lads.

Fleetwood's support is laughable, can't see it improving just another hobby club.

Think we finished 6th, a great effort considering we are still a small club and even if some of the bigger sides in this league are performing poorly, they still take 4 figure followings more often than not.

Well done Jamo - all the efforts put into this each season are thoroughly welcome!

And whilst I do think ours stands out given the circumstances and outside of the bigger teams in the league (and Walsall's final day following), the number that stands out more so IMO is Southend. In the Arse end of nowhere (compared to the rest of the league) and not a big club - to average 600+ is quite impressive.

I agree. But 1st season up syndrome plays a part still some great numbers though

I'm sure I am going to get crucified here, but its because I am generally interested, but what is the big deal about people being so obsessed with the amount of people that go and watch football?

I realise that without the fans, there is no game. But ever since, what seems like, the dawning of time, newpapers would print the number of people that go to the games and still do and obviously football programmes do something similar and even print the number of away supporters.

I guess what baffles me is the people that get so upset because clubs 'clearly' get their travelling numbers wrong, and when I say upset in a bit of a piss taking way, certain people tend to go way overboard. To me, people that seem to obsess with attendances are a bit like trainspotter, however I get the feeling that for some people its a badge of honour that their club take 1100 people to Fleetwood on a cold winter's evening.

Genuinely interested in what people's opinions are.

I wouldn't say people in this thread are obsessed. Like, I wouldn't get worked up and START TYPING IN CAPS if someone disagreed with an opinion or argued against a figure that had been quoted, it's just a little interest.

Dont get me wrong, I'll label a following as shit if I think it is (and its up to them to actually give a shit about that) and I'll praise one if I think it's decent, but I do think it's interesting seeing how the away support of various clubs compare and contrast with each other.

Don't get me wrong, when I say people are obsessed, there are probably only 2 or 3 who I reckon actually have a bit of a boner about the number of fans that go and watch their club.

I do get your point about the variety of support from clubs up and down the country.

At the end of the day this is the away support thread so I do expect chat about that, I just find it interesting that some people seem just as interested in numbers of fans, than the results on the pitch. Not a criticism.

We've done very well with our away support this season and we've probably had the more away games on school nights than anyone else that would affect our number. Blademan is correct though about it being first season syndrome and next season will not be so good but we will definitely take over 1k to the 3 clubs coming down.

On the assumption that Barnsley go up, ourselves and Bristol Rovers would be 4th and 5th in that table based on last season's followings, as we both averaged over 1,000. Plymouth weren't far behind either.

Swindon at less than 500 is pathetic. I'd have thought more people would have taken the opportunity to get out of the place for the day.
