Club have reviewed it and have decided to submit an appeal of the red card, irrespective of it 'only' being the Cup next week, such is the annoyance.

This is what Dermot Gallagher says about the incident.

GALLAGHER'S VIEW: Incorrect decision

GALLAGHER SAYS: It's a tough call, in my opinion it's not a foul, but a lot of people think it is a foul. When you see the referee's view, he thinks he's gone through the back of him and taken Vardy out. But he clearly wins the ball. Andre, unfortunately, because of the angle he is at, can't see. He sees that Francis flies in, he sees the ball move away and presumes that Vardy has touched it. That tells you that different angles show different things. It is a really, really tough decision, though. You can understand why the referee has given the red card.

Personally I don't see why it's not a penalty. He does touch the ball, but he doesn't 'win' the ball as Gallagher says, if he doesn't bring Vardy down then the Leicester man will still have control of the ball because the touch has neither won possession nor diverted it out of Vardys path. If Vardy doesn't get brought down he still gets a shot away because Boruc hasn't come off his line quick enough there to gather that up before Vardy can get another foot on it. Just getting a touch on the ball doesn't mean it's not a foul, we see it all the time with tackles from behind, if you touch the player irrespective of touching the ball it's often blown up for a foul.
What Gallagher doesn't mention is if he thinks there's contact between Francis and Vardy, just about the contact on the ball from Francis. If he's saying there's no contact then I get the call of saying it's not a penalty, but then the contact on the ball is then irrelevant anyway.

I suppose for me it depends what they're appealing. If they're saying he gets a touch on the ball before going into Vardy then I don't see how that's an appeal that'll work out. If they're claiming it's a dive then presumably they'd only do that if they had a conclusive angle for the footage in which case it'd definitely be overturned. But nobody has mentioned Vardy taking a dive.

Here's what Simon Francis has to say, which I imagine will form part of the appeal. (Taken from local newspaper)

“Having seen it again, he (Mariner) was easily 30 yards behind us and was probably behind the line of the ball so it was tough for him to give.

“I am not sure if he was 100 per cent certain it was a penalty because I got the ball and he actually agreed with that. He said I got the man and the ball.

“It was a hard one to take. I was side by side with Vardy. I wasn’t behind him and it wasn’t as if it was a nasty tackle. It was one I had to make from the side.

“I hooked the ball at the same time as Vardy fell into me. Most strikers would go down in the box if they know they can’t get the shot off but it was frustrating because I got sent off and he gave a penalty.

“It was tough for him to give it and to be so clear about it without speaking to any of the other officials. He didn’t go to any of them, he blew the whistle pretty quickly in my opinion and it was disappointing.”

Goes on to say about the second late penalty claim:
“I honestly thought that if I had still been on the pitch and he hadn’t given mine, he would have given that one."

News is the appeal has been rejected (no news on what/why) but thankfully the ban held at the one game this weekend.

Seems strange they reject that one but say Cameron was harshly sent off for basically whacking somebody round the head..

Slap round the head is absolutely fine.
That tackle is a penalty, red card, and a ban.

:bl:

Defenders should just smack Vardy over the head instead of tackling him in future. I think that's what we can take from this debacle.
