I know a win is seen as a positive but surely a 0-0 or a loss here would have been best long term cos LvG would surely have been shown the door.

His job is seemingly safe regardless of results - Woodward is desperate to keep him because he is supposedly "laying down foundations" that will massively benefit the next manager. How much of that Woodward is basing on Barca and Bayern as opposed to the work he is doing here is up for debate.

Harsh on Sheffield United, but it was a penalty, despite Memphis's theatrics.

Didn't want a thrashing or a replay and did no disservice to ourselves. If you're gonna lose to Man Utd its got to be a penalty in Fergie time. C'est la vie

Scholes calls it like it is. Shame he's not allowed to just say 'shit' on air.

I'm not sure even that would have ousted him. He's got the backing of a very naive board.

Edit - Steve beat me to it.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
It's a definite penalty. You'd be having it if it were for City.

Which is basically what I said. At first it looked like a dive, but there was contact. (Now if we compare it to Aguero where contact itself wasn't enough and going down easily was a good reason not to give it...)

I'll reserve judgement until I see it properly on the highlights later - my first instincts were that it was a clear dive though.

Looked like you were dismissing the contact by putting it in quotations, silks.

Anyway I've never seen Scholes this upset! He's in danger of losing his placid Steve Davis persona.

Fuck off Hargreaves, "it's not all down to the manager". It fucking is in this case.

I thought it was a pen tbf, daft to go diving in like that. Rush of blood to the head but whatever, it happens and no respect lost at all and should still be a confidence boost when they look back at it.

Some really bizarre subs from Adkins I thought, Sammon was the only one that had a relatively poor game for us imo

I understand that you should get the ball to your best players as Scholes, Clough and Hargreaves keep saying but they're against a League one side and this is one of the most expensively assembled premier league sides around. Every single one of those players should have enough quality to do something on the ball. They shouldn't need to play it to a certain few and expect them to make something of it. Everyone should be capable.

I was pointing out the slight hypocrasy that when it was Aguero it was 'too theatrical' but now there's 'contact' so it's a pen. They were both penalties.

From the first showing it looked it, and the first replay looked absolutely embarrassingly bad. But from another angle, which was closest to the view the ref would have had, then you can see that he is caught by the defender.

Fair enough - it did look embarrassing on the first time round that I saw it. I doubt he was caught enough to warrant the theatrics that came after but I'll have a proper look later.

Scholes has to stop himself from swearing on so many occasions.

LvG: "Sheffield United didn't create any chances, but why is nobody criticising them? I think its unfair. - Moyes-esque.

He seems to have no concept of the fact that he is in charge of a Premier League club expected to entertain as well as win trophies and he never seems to factor in the money he has been allowed to spend either. His indignation is very strange.

Who said that Aguero didn't deserve a penalty? He cost himself a penalty by being too theatrical, I don't remember anyone saying he didn't deserve it. They were just calling him an idiot for a theatrical fall which made it look like a dive. Both incidents were penalties, except Depay got his. Lucky break with the referee.

Scholes has being dying to say that for weeks now and it all came out in one rant, he nearly went against his stupid you should never sack a manager rule - one which of course the class of 92 went against at Salford but that's a different story.
I don't think we will ever get to the point where Scholes or any ex United pundits start criticising Wayne Rooney.

The reaction of Hammond and his teammates showed it was definite pen without needing to see any replays. Also Depay looked genuinely hurt when he was checking his shin.

The game was a total shitefest from start to finish. Man U are total wank, two shots on target, and one of them was the pen.
If the Gills had been there instead, it would have been a different scoreline (3-2 probably)

I have no love for united but watching the highlights saddened me a bit. I grew up with watching them playing cavalier, percussive, attacking football. Quick wingers and Mavericks in attack. I understand that football has changed but the supporters can't be happy watching this turgid nonsense.
I know I'm being nostalgic but what the fuck has happened to your club?

Your post earlier about not wanting a replay what the fuck is that all about and also sammon played very very well today he did everything our gameplan asked of him. Sharp was the only shite player thats why he was took off. Lets be reyt when would adkins take billy off ever that proves how bad he was.

In an already busy January I didn't want a replay.

Nothing seemed to stick with Sammon today and what do you expect Sharp to do playing on his own with barely any support, made as much a nuisance of himself as can be expected. Once we went slightly more attacking I'd rather him up there than Sammon or Flynn.

Fuck me busy january if any footballer cant play saturday then midweek then i give up if youve fallen for that shit then seriously have a rethink. Sammon won every header and did everything perfect for the 1st 20 min but billy wasnt on the same wavelength. After that sammon came much deeper which i believe he was told too and didnt really have a chance to impact. My issue with with sharp was mainly the 1st 20 mins when he was a joke i didnt expect owt after that as all we did was keep giving them the ball back.
