If John mcgreal gets the vale job then I swear we are trying to set a record for having the most managers with the first name John.

John McGrath
John Rudge
John Askey

Frustrating though, never do anything straightforward.

Just pray to god that this John never has anything to do with your club:

If it is a new manager tomorrow I’m not sure who it is...

Either after yesterday Carol has caved in and offered Flitcroft what he wants or McGreal as the second option... or even someone else.

Bookies have the two as close favourites.

Seems to be some talk that we are not having a new manager but going for a director of football/head coach route which will be announced.

Interesting to see, we have a massive amount of coaching staff.

Danny Pugh
Frank Sinclair who’s main job is development from youth to first team
Darren Potter left Mk to join our staff
Billy Paynter
Anthony Griffith

Alongside your usual GK/fitness coaches etc

So a DOF May work and organise the mess and hopefully sort any snakes.

Who could that be? For DOF possibly Brian Horton? Or the third coming of Micky Adams? Rumours a few weeks ago suggested Adams was interested in a return to the club.

Would this mean Pugh stays as head coach? Or maybe someone like Murray coming in... another possibility is McGreal as I believe the Colchester chairman did most of the running? And Carol and the Col U chairman were quite close as he offered to support and advise her when she took over as they were our first opponents...

Interesting day aheas

I was going to mention the number of coaches you have. At Tranmere as part of the First Team coaching staff, we have Keith Hill as gaffer then Dawes and Parkinson as Assistants with Jones as Goalkeeping Coach. There’s then two physios and one S and C coach.

The Port Vale bench looked twice the size of ours on Saturday!

We have absolutely loads and no idea why really, bear in mind this is without the manager in place as well who may want some staff of his own.

Rather we booted a few and spent bigger on a good manager.

So someone who presumably applied and interviewed to be our next manager ends up now being the person who will be in charge of appointing our next manager. Couldn’t write this.

Am sure there are pros and cons to appointing a DOF but we do look incredibly bloated with various roles off the pitch. Not sure where the value is really.

Reading more into it I’m starting to come round to it all.

He was interviewed, looked at it and felt it needs a lot of structure to the club to give it the vision long term it needs and Carol wants and he will build that.

If we get the head coach sorted swiftly then it could work very well. He speaks well.

I’m sold, his interview is superb and really expresses what’s needed and what’s missing.

Confirmed Pugh isn’t the manager going forward and that will be appointment ASAP.

Long term project... just what’s needed

Get ready to be GALVANIZED!

Dunno how he will be in that role, he’s definitely a good coach, but I’m not sure about director of football. Wish him the best though.

I’ve bought into the idea! Vale have never had a forward thinking plan since I can remember. Even the season we did get promotion was a bit of a fluke. It’s quite clearly an ambitious challenge set by Carol but to me this shows she isn’t just saying the right things! She’s actually trying to do something about it! We’ve all said that something is wrong at the club and it stems further than just a manager so what better way to do it! Flitcroft will no doubt have a huge say in the meantime with the squad and the training until a manager is hired but it will be a background approach and leave Danny on the touch line shouting the orders! Let’s just get through this season and be smart!

He speaks crap and lots of it. Synergy this, galvanised that. Every sentence was at least 30 words.

"All I ever ask from the team is that we run for the people of Mansfield and we run for each other, and we’ve had that tonight in abundance." I told the team to work hard.

"To try and get that equalising goal with the fans right behind it, it would have been a good end to the game. But it’s been chalked off by a decision that’s wrong". We tried to equalise but there was an officiating mistake.

His motivational one-to-one pre-season chat with CJ was full-on David Brent.

Good coach for us though.

Not forgetting the microwave.

I missed that one but it's great. I've never heard anyone use microwave like that.

His use of language and lack of substance must be noticeable among the employees at whichever club he's managing at. Bet you in person he litters every sentence with, 'for me', 'at the end of the day' and 'it is what it is'.

Saying all this, I’d much rather have him back and get shot of Sheridan. He’s unbelievably bad.

If an owner wanted relegation guaranteed - call for Shezza.

I think this will be more of a common trend in the future - Head Coaches/Managers taking on Director of Football roles.

I can see why the Port Vale heircachy have done this, they're still relatively green and new in terms of owning a football club, so they've decided to hire someone with a track record of working on the football side of things to give them more experience within the football setup.

We have a similar setup here with Martin Ling as our DOF, despite what a few of our fans think its worked quite well for us. The DOF will bascially be in charge of all things football related at the club, although they don't train and pick the team. They observe all the football staffs behaviour, performance, help recruit players, negotiate contracts and do 90% of the leg work when it comes to signing players like dealing with agents etc - This goes from the first team right the way down to the youth setups.

From what I can gather on here, a few people at Port Vale aren't helping behind the scenes on the football side for various reasons so the DOF will need to identify this quickly and sort out what needs to be done to help the team and manager - This is probably a problem the owners don't quite know how to get to the bottom of.

I think the setup can work well, it has mainly with us. Just expect Flitcroft to be used as a punch bag from fans when certain players are signed/not signed and if results go to pot.

Also as well as I think our setup works, Martin Lings son Sam plays for us and as much as I believe alot of our fans go overboard about it, Sam does come across at times as getting heavily favoured in terms of team selection, because he is clearly our main weak link at right back with the mistakes he makes off the ball - But he is rarely dropped - if ever. I can't help but think this is partly because his dad is DOF.

You’ve hit the nail on the head Terminator.

Our owners are great, backed Askey, invested in the improvements but don’t have experience in football, we’ve taken off commercially, the work with the charities and community but the football has kept the trajectory almost under Smurf.

We still have the lack of infrastructure there, the Youth team is crap, Smith and Gibbo have done well coming through and obviously Sam Morsy has gone on to do well for himself but we sold our good kids and with the cap system a structure is going to be vital, we’ve hired coaches in but need to now get the structure to it from kids to first team.

Interesting to see who Flitcroft appoints as manager! He went in last Sunday for an interview as manager and now he’s hiring the manager! Which is funny but I think it could be a good move. Clubs can’t throw money at the first team anymore so investing this way can help improve your club and is probably better than throwing big wages at short term success.

i don't really understand the decision making here although im not against it in principle.

as has been said, the guy applied for the managers job last week and now all of a sudden he's a DOF and hiring the new manager. was a DOF considered before last week? if not, have we put the feelers out on any other potential DOF candidates or just hired the guy that spoke well in an interview for another role?

i think if it works it will be better than the tired old fashioned manager role, but it does add a few more pit falls too - the relationship between DOF and manager is key, if that turns sour then we're fucked.

Some managers go to a club, they just pick a team and it's off they go. With Flitcroft it felt like he was building an attacking style, the team had identity and the players were improving until late in the season. If he can get those values through the whole club, he could be a good DoF. If he stays in that role and successive managers have to be committed to that style then it could be a good few years for Vale. He just needs to get the synergy right, really microwave the galvanise.

Yeah fair enough i wasnt knocking him and although his interviews had always annoyed me a bit i had come round to him being the manager until it apparently went pear shaped last week (which we now know wasn't really pear shaped but to discuss a different role).

my issue really is that 2 weeks ago our owners set out a list of requirements for what they wanted from a manager, they interview someone, like him a lot but then decide to hire him for a brand new role (for the club at least) and task him with then hiring someone for the job that he had applied for.

I'm sure they would have sought a lot of advice from people in and out of football and it feels like the decision is a good one - it's just how they've reached that decision that is my concern.

and for flitcroft - he sat in an interview a week ago presumably saying how much he wanted the managers job and now he's not taking that job but another one entirely. i'd hpe that a DoF is a longer term appointment and this seems like a rushed appointment really considering carol never publically said we were looking for a Dof and by all accounts she only realised how important it could be whilst interviewing flitcroft...

hope it works out obviously and ill always back the club because why not, it's just been a strange few weeks. hopefully we can just be normal soon
