Being honest, I don't know. He's managed at one club, Crewe, and as par for the course it was a mixture of success and in the end failure.
I think that he's learned from the experience. managers don't always get it right first time. it's like a lot of things in life. You evaluate the things that worked. you identify the reasons for things that didn't, and you carefully choose a situation where you can succeed.
Sure, in the end, if city don't give him the job, he might have to take what he can get. maybe Grimsby will be a good match for him.
He's someone who'd want a lot of control, and build things long term. He's not lacking in self-confidence. He's a Yorkshireman. He wants the job. How many of those other names being bandied about have actually applied?

If he fails, well, he has that in common with the last 6 or 7 managers, but I think he's a solid manager. He'd fit in well with the culture. I just think it's a good match.
I won't be too upset if it's the Cowleys. They have a good record. I suppose deep down, I just think David will be more committed. He wants to build something. I want somebody who wants us.

I'm not interested in supposed quick fixes. I want a sensible long term strategy, and Artell is my guy.

I'd love to see him have another shot at management because he is a great bloke deep down and if that arsehole Davis got a second chance then Artell certainly deserves one.

As I've said before though, Artell does come with a lot of baggage. The board weren't happy with his conduct at times on our touchline and he was often amongst the most carded managers in the league. A fair amount of players who have played under him aren't exactly his biggest fans either and football is a village where word gets round really quickly.

He's a very knowledgable bloke with a good philosophy for how to play football and he thinks long-term which is at odds with the majority of football clubs. The problem is he doesn't take much responsibility for his failures and that's telling. He still blames everyone but himself for failing at Crewe when some of his decisions were a big factor as to how we ended up going into a very sharp decline. Not playing Tommy Lowery when he wouldn't sign a new deal yet allowing many before him to play despite not signing new deals is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen a professional manager do when I look back at it.

Pathetic if so, how does the job interview go? ‘Hey Dean, I notice you’ve been sacked from every single managerial job you’ve ever had, you must be the one for us’.

Really poor appointment if true. Another failure.

Crucially the club say we’re looking for a ‘Head Coach’, how very modern

Yeah my confidence would drop significantly if my club said that.

That should have everyone worried, it will mean that you have one person running recruitment and another the team...there is very little chance, in our experience, that both will have the same idea about what is needed. Last winter our Director of Football sent all our best players out on loan, bringing in less experienced players as replacements and effectively sealed our relegation back to League Two.

Southend reportedly turned down an approach from us to talk to Kevin Maher, and Alan Nixon has tweeted we’ve interviewed Clemence twice.

Gills would be in a better situation if they kept Harris, likely going to remain a limited side either way but at least he picked up the points.

You're underestimating how badly this football club is run. Incompetence from top to bottom.
The main reason clubs drop to Non League is the boardroom being horrendous so I would agree you could drop if things don't improve in the next few years.

Think some are looking at Holdens last few ( brief) appointments and becoming very nervous.
Having an immediately family member at a club when Holden was manager he speaks extremely highly of him. I’d be surprised if any players under him have a bad word to say against him.
He needs the right club, willing to allow him sometime to build, and he will be a success.

Im less confident than other Gy fans about the squad. In fact I think Paul Hurst’s main failing has been a poor window in Jan and then (with the benefit of hindsight admittedly) creating an unbalanced squad in the summer with some standout under-performers.

We only have 2 proper forwards, Rose and Wilson, the only thing Pyke has added is an endless stream of Dad’s Army references on the Fishy. I was a bit surprised we let Orsi go to Crawley at the time as he was under contract, but that decision looks completely daft now.

Two I’d have expected as first XI starters for this season, Hunt and Glennon, have faded completely out the picture - not sure what’s happened there, and then we replaced a perfectly competent L2 keeper in Crocombe, with a blunder per game keeper. On top of that Eisa, is largely invisible in most games, his 20 yarder goals are his only contribution. Clifton’s move centrally hasn’t worked well and while we all love Gav Holohan, he’s 32 and struggles to last 90. At CB Waterfall is starting to show his age and we only have 3.

The new person will need a good window in Jan. Hopefully Cartwright in goal will fulfill his promise but we need at least 3 in and ideally 4, with 2 or 3 going the other way.

Its only the forwards hes struggled though. Hunt, Glennon and Clifton are not poor players, they are just playing poor. A change of manager will hopefully find their form again.

As for Orsi, I had to look him up, as I thought he must be scoring for fun based on your comments but no, he's scored as many as Eisa, so not sure why it was a bad idea to let him go, he's not the forward we desperately need to sign, that we actually let go!

I'd agree on the keeper front, but did we let Crocombe go, or did he get a better offer, he said we offered him better terms, but Hurst wanted a decision so he could plan if he was moving on. Don't think you can blame either player or manager for that. In hindsight he is obviously better than what we replaced him with though.

We deffo need a striker, but the squad is better than its current lge position, I'm confident of that.

The Orsi point is that he is a striker though, who was excellent in the cup run and was starting to link well with Lloyd at the end of last season, and we replaced him with a converted wing back. At the time, I was expecting the reason we let him go was that we intended to bring in an established recognised striker or at least a really strong loan prospect.

A head coach and a separate recruitment team can work and work very very well with the right choices.

It's a complete myth that the DoF and/or recruitment team sign all the players and the Head Coach doesn't have a say, so the title of Head Coach wouldn't bother me in the slightest if I were Grimsby.

Orsi is doing well for Crawley, yes he does miss some sitters and you wouldn't swap him for Haarland but he works his socks off and he will hit about 15 goals this season.

Orsi has scored every 241 minutes on the pitch this season. Donovan Wilson every 85 mins.

Stats eh?
I really like Wilson, looks like our most natural finisher in a long time. Much has been said about Hursts inability to find a striker but I think Rose & Wilson are improvements on last year, it’s the dreadfully dull and clueless build up play that’s killing us

Crawley have released a statement regarding the Matty Etherington at Colchester .... thingy...

“We want to apologize to the Colchester United fans who were caught in the middle of an unfortunate situation.

Matthew Etherington resigned as Crawley Town manager last December and had the following clause in his contract:

"The Manager shall not be permitted to bring his Agreement to an end early under this clause to take up employment at or be otherwise engaged by another football club playing in the same or a lower league as the Club is playing in at that time. No buyout will be permitted in such circumstances."

We were not aware that Matthew had been in breach since June 28, 2023, when he was appointed the U-21 coach of Colchester, until Wednesday of this past week. On Thursday, we clarified his contract with our legal team and alerted Colchester on Friday.

When we alerted Robbie Cowling Friday, we were told he would provide us zero compensation for Matthew.

We do not believe Robbie or Colchester had any idea until Friday that Matthew was in breach of the contract he signed with us. We have no problem if he is an under-21 coach at Colchester and if Matthew asks us permission to reassume that role, we'd be happy to grant it.

We're happy Colchester won on Saturday and we wish Robbie and his team the best in their ongoing managerial search.“

All a bit vindictive to me as the bloke resigned (and he did resign and completely stumped Wagmi when he did) 10 months ago.
