I’m not sure that’s the case.

McDonald has said from the very off that he wishes to continue playing. The noises regards McDonald wanting the job always came from from social media - namely twitter.

It’s evident McDonald now wishes to return to playing, as per the statement and Trueman will take charge of the one game this weekend.

Not sure what the problem is. But as always, there’s a problem because Sparks and Rupp can never do anything right.
That's pretty much what I'm saying. McDonald agreed to the gig under the impression it would be short term, probably a couple of games. He's now on his sixth game and has had enough and has told Sparks as such.

We're four weeks in and we still haven't conducted final interviews. Quite how you can continue to defend Sparks when it's clear to Stevie Wonder that he's clueless is beyond me.

Jason Stockwood is always going round Cheshire (presumably lives this way) bragging about how he runs Grimsby and how he calls all the shots. No surprise to see the power play implemented.

If it doesn't go right, there could be and probably should be mutiny at Blundell Park. Egotists like him rarely end well.

Hurst did a good job there and was a good man.
The Grimsby fans will obviously know better than me but I've always been quite impressed by Stockwood. He's not frightened to get himself in the press but it feels like the decisions he makes are in the best interests of Grimsby and feels like he wants to make them a proper community club.

Yep 100% we are in very safe hands with him.
Already improved the whole infrastructure of the club massively at his own cost, just need to get the playing side right now.

Thinks he's the big dog when out in Cheshire. His mate Andrew something is the real money man. Stockwood loves the attention. He'll be calling the shots and will fancy himself to implement some daft Director of Football shite.

Yeah Stockwood always comes over as the big dog type

Tbh think he has some significant credentials e.g:

In 2010, Stockwood became CEO and then vice-chairman of Simply Business.[7] Simply Business was voted as the number one ‘Best Place to Work’ in the UK by The Sunday Times in both 2015 and 2016, with Stockwood winning the overall Best Leader award in the latter year. The company's awards led to it being accredited as a certified B Corporation.[8] Simply Business raised capital through a number of private equity investors, most notably from New York based Aquiline Private Equity. It was eventually sold to The Travelers Companies in 2017 for $500m

Obviously a complete numpty next to stocky!!

He looks quite clever next to me mate.

But he's a laughing stock amongst the Cheshire set due to his braggadocious nature and the "Guardian columns" he does that everyone has been lectured about.

The Grimsby fans will have his number marked already. He'll hopefully be gone from there soonish. Because I like Grimsby a lot.

The way he has treated Paul Hurst and his assistant Chris Doig has been an absolute disgrace. Hurst has had a poor run but has done a lot for that football club. Classless.

Stockwood lives in a place called Prestbury here in Cheshire, not far from me (far in price though!).

I'm not on a wind up, it's opinion based generally so others can have opinions of their own freely of course.

But Jason Stockwood with his grand ideas of directors of football, young coaches etc is absolutely nailed on from what I know of the bloke.

Maybe it works for Grimsby and he ends a hero.

He's been bragging about ditching Hurst for weeks.

I’m not anti-Sparks or Rupp - so it’s quite easy for me to defend them. How anyone can blame a CEO and owner when we have a bunch of players (not just this squad) who are willing to cash in without a fight, is beyond me. Watching favourable managers sail down the river. The same mangers, when appointed, were welcomed with opening arms. But of course, they fail, it’s Sparks and Rupp’s fault.

Fact is, this club is run better off the field than when Rhodes-Lawn were custodians. Let’s not go down the many, many mistakes those two made during their tenure - costly mistakes which are never spoken of. There’s plenty of fans like me who choose to stay silent on this matter, but just because the narrative is anti-this, that and the other on social media (or whatever chooses to be fashionable for that particular week), don’t think you’re the majority - just trust me on that.

You have your opinion, of which I respect. Please do so with mine.

I guess you can never win being in the position that Rupp/Sparks are in and where Lawn/Rhodes were, particularly when you get 16,500 fans stating how they could do the job better.

The deals the commercial team are churning out means that side of the business is functioning much better than the football side. I think kudos should be giving to Sparks and L’longo on this front, sadly it won’t be because it isn’t football.

I get that it is a football club, but those deals allow a solid footing for the club to be based. I do believe that they will get it right eventually, even if it means them getting lucky on an appointment like Lawn/Rhodes did with Parkinson.

As I’ve said before, I’d love to see the club have a footballing philosophy from top to bottom, with perhaps a DoF in with good connections, not one that only knows the ins and outs at Scunthorpe! However, whether the staff structure and wage bill at the club can afford it, who knows!!

Bet he hates being in the shadow of our man Mark Stott who is the clear king of the Cheshire golf course football clique.

I thought it'd be yer Giggses, yer Scholeses and yer Nevilles that would rule the roost of the Cheshire golfing scene.

Looks like our new man is Stephen Clemence, Guardian breaking the news before the club (which is bizarre)

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/nov/01/stephen-clemence-gillingham-head-coach

I always wonder with these managerial signings that are touted as offering "entertaining football", so much of the time it just ends up being ineffectual shortpass-ball which players at this level are too inconsistent to be able to execute well enough to lead to decent attacks.

Maybe the new guy will work out, maybe he won't, but I think the sides that do best down in the lower divisions fall under one of the following:

  • 1-0 grindball merchants
  • Fouly, cheaty spoilers (mostly us under Ainsworth)
  • Sides that can mix it - play their football in the opposition final third, but aren't shy of getting it forward early
Flowing football *can* work down here, I remember the Swansea side that rocketed up the league as well as the old Yeovil side who were actually decent making it work, but it's the exception, not the rule.

Of course "entertaining" is a very vague phrase so who knows how the actual style will pan out, but let's hope that that isn't just a synonym for failed tiki-taka.

Lots of sides down here that struggle are also aiming to be one of these sides tbf, they just fail to achieve it.

oh for sure more "pragmatic" football doesn't always pan out either, but it's easier to pull off than the more ambitious ball-to-feet style.

One of our fan led sites has wrote the below, very worry and not very surprising:

"Other rumours have reached WOAP of candidates taking themselves out of the running after initial meetings with the club."

He’s usually a happy clapper as well who sees little wrong.

The problem with the possession based game plan in L2 is that it’s relatively easy for L2 cloggers to negate the fancy Dan players into making mistakes. The trade off is gambling that the majority of chances given up by fannying around at the back aren’t capitalised upon by most L2 strikers.

Watching 20-pass moves that lead to a goal look good in hindsight - the 18 or 19 passes leading up to it are boring to watch. It’s an atmosphere killer as watching the ball being knocked around between the CBs hardly gets the pulses racing.

I like our recent ambition. I've seen more than enough less ambitious and more pragmatic football which I agree likely increases your chances of success especially in short term. Our more ambitious and riskier approach is long overdue and bearing fruits both on and off the field thanks to the almost silent owners and strange Luke et co.

I hear what you are saying Dan but you think a possession based game plan in any league , including the Premier League is boring to watch. I'm guessing you didn't see it but Manchester City's game plan at Old Trafford was far from boring in fact the complete opposite to most.

Ultimately your results of a season and league position tell you whether it works or not.

The attendances tell you whether it's boring or not.

We're always a much better and more successful team when we're playing proper passing football.

Yeah I think you're probably right. I think it's more viable than it used to be with players being more technically capable than they used to be, but you have to have the right players to match your style and if you're going from style to style all the time it's a lot more difficult to have them.

Agree with the attractive passing football comments. Passing the ball between full backs via the keeper is not attractive. That wonderful Barca side rarely involved the keeper in this. The ball was passed forward mostly.

Re Etherington. Glad he has been reappointed but if that clause was in his contract he probably is breaking the terms. 6 months unemployed should negate it but I don't think it does.
