He's not exactly set anywhere on fire after leaving Wycombe though has he.

I wouldn’t judge him on the QPR job.

Even their own fans admitted that that was an absolute poisoned chalice, and that Ainsworth was mad to take it.

Although it is fair to note that GA’s replacement kept them up, which Ainsworth didn’t look like doing.

His experience has mostly been in the bottom two tiers though, so there’s that. And he’s delivered promotions on a limited budget.

That said he was given time to really shape everything about the club at Wycombe, I don’t know if he’d be given that much leeway at Gills.

You be a crap lumberjack if you were tearing up trees. They are meant to cut them down.

Seemed to do a decent job at Cambridge and looks a sound appointment for Gillingham.

I suspect Bonner will be in for a few of his old favourite players. Adam May, Jack Lankester, Jabril Okedina all available for transfer.

I can also see him bringing Barry Corr in as his number two.

I'm rather happy about this.

It means we don't have to worry about Gillingham nicking our managerbwho lives very close to the place.

That is a big test for Bonner though, isn't it? He was a Cambridge fan who had worked there for years and was basically part of the furniture, working his way through many roles before landing the top job.

This will be a totally different proposition, going into an entirely new club and with a bit of pressure/expectation on him too as Gillingham will no doubt expect to be mounting a challenge for the top three. Could go either way for me.

He'll do for me, not a name that has tried and failed 5 times at this level but still gets a gig as they were a decent ex-pro, he's had success at both this level and keeping a side in the league a level up, he played decent football in this league before and with an entire pre-season to get going we start off in a good position. We have a good core already, and everyone and their dog knows what our issue was last season - add some goals into an already reasonable side and things will go better next season.

I think next season is up for grabs for anyone, I don't see a standout obvious promotion favourite like we had this year.

I think this is a fair take. He should have a more competitive budget at Gillingham than he had with us - even when we were in League 2 our budget wasn’t amazing. But expectation will be higher - it was pretty non existent when he began with us and then covid hit so he was sheltered from a vicious crowd.

He’s very thorough and also very positive. He will immerse himself in the town and he sees the “ambassadorial” side of a club to be very important too. It’ll be whether results come on the pitch quickly enough, at least he’s got a whole summer to mould his squad rather than having to pick up the pieces part way through.

Allegedly we're in talks with Barnet to try and get their gaffer, Dean Brennan. Derek Adams has also been in talks.

I think they'd both be steadying influences for Swindon who look to have all the makings of a big club capable of dropping into the NL based on the back of the second half of last season.

Last season was our worst ever finish in history, so we have to do something to arrest that and try and turn things around. Things do not appear to be rosy behind the scenes and so putting in place what, on paper, seems a relatively decent option (certainly better than giving it to interim manager Gunning) is a start. But it all seems like building on sand currently. A lot needs to change still.

Latest is that we've agreed compensation with Barnet and just personal terms to go. Still half expecting this to be a load of waffle before we give Gunning the gig!

Brennan took over a highly charged situation at Barnet, players were not at all happy and I think Jamie Turly who once played for us was either on strike or told to stay away from the club. He kept them up and they've made the playoffs the next two seasons. Think he'll do well for you and arguably he's the man we should have got rather than Maynard who took over Wealdstone from him after he'd got them promoted.

I know nothing of him and did a bit of reading yesterday and saw that himself and Maynard worked together quite a lot. I do think Maynard may work out for Notts in the long run but may need patience. Similarly I read Brennan likes to play attacking football which is a positive. It still might not happen, but is certainly an upgrade on giving our interim boss the job.

Brennan has told us to Foxtrot Oscar.

Strange turn of events that if you’d agreed compo. You’d think in that scenario some semblance of agreement in the background would have been made on his personal terms. That is assuming your owner ever was actually serious and not just buying time to appoint Gunning.

Rumour is he was offered the job as assistant to Gunning. If true, our owner is a bigger idiot than many think.
