Translation - "We didn't get what we wanted, we aren't used to this and we are embarrassed about it".

Didn't they get what they wanted? I'm thinking that they've just put on this charade so they can point fingers at Man Utd for them not landing the keeper they want but only ever intended to get for fuck all next summer. I don't think the Real fans will be up in arms about this as I'd expect they're sane enough (just enough) to think that it's a better idea to hold off til he's free.

Well they clearly wanted him during this window and it didn't happen, I don't think the club are used to that. They'll almost certainly still get him down the line but for now it's funny to see them with their nose out of joint feeding the papers all these lines about how professional they are and how this wasn't at all their fault.

Opposing the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre!!!!
I reckon it's their fault too. They shouldn't have allowed it to go to the wire

Yeah, I guess because they knew that he was desperate to join them that they could just click their fingers on the last day and it would all magically get sorted.

I think United have gone into piss take mode a little bit now though...

A Manchester United spokesman said, “The facts speak for themselves. The FA are prepared to back our case that documents were in on time.

We all like to blame others but if you let one slip through your fingers into the back of the net, then ultimately the culpability is yours."

I think they wanted him for a low fee, maybe something as low as £10mill because he's a keeper who generally don't go for much and because he only has a year on his contract. I just have my doubts they ever really intended to pay £29mill + Navas (or was it a £29mill valuation including Navas?) for someone who'll cost nowt next year. In January they can get the pre contract sorted out to keep Perez in the good books closer to the summer. It's all about saving face and trying to boast to fans, as long as Perez is the man that gets De Gea there, I don't think he'll be massively bothered if it's now or later. If he can get away with it later I think that's the preferred option. It's not like there's lynch mobs in Madrid wanting to string him up for not getting their marquee signing this summer.

I assume he's saying United should have tapped up Navas, and Madrid with de gea, to speed up his contract signing.

It'll be interesting if e transfer ban for Madrid comes in this summer

I guess the question is whether he can get him later. All being equal Madrid with be under a registration ban this summer. I admit, Barca appealing allowed them an extra free transfer window which Madrid may get, but Madrid need to be operating on the assumption they won't be able to register anyone

The ambiguities over the deal will likely roll on and blame shown each way.

A local journo seems to think that it went.

Madrid made low offer Monday morning: Rejected
Madrid made 29 + Navas offer: Accepted, paperwork sent.
Paperwork returned, deal changed by madrid to 29 (18 + Navas at 11): Rejected after some time, united resent original deal
Madrid sent back signed original deal, info was entered by united with fa but madrid didn't do.

As it was their deadline day on the monday it was up to madrid to enter both de gea and navas details, united could always close the navas deal the next day.

It's rumored, but has a tinge of a truthful feel. I can definately see Madrid trying to pull a fast one in hopes of united just signing. Some say perez delibrately didn't enter the details, he could save face and save money.

It's highly unlikely but if De Gea signed a new contract and we gave it a release clause (because he is definitely going back to Spain at some point) Madrid will have to pay more than before. Also we won't have to get Navas as a quick buy. Lloris would still be my pick.

He's not wrong, Woodward has been in the job for less than three years. What's more surprising is a man that has overseen nearly a £1bn of spending during his tenure, in which his team has been under the thumb of Barcelona, has failed to get his number one target this summer.
