Manchester United's Squad Very Much Still In Need Of Surgical Impliments This Summer

Yeah, I thought about that. But I decided even United fans would be embarrassed to pretend a one off match against a relegated side, and based upon the achievements of the season before, constituted a trophy.

Tbh I think the last thing we need is to go and spend another 150 - 200 million pounds this summer. No matter what quality of player we buy there is absolutely no guarantee they will settle in quickly. Obviously having a full pre season instead of coming off a world cup will make it easier but I think adding another 4 or 5 players into the first team squad will only cause problem in the short term. As we, Spurs and Liverpool have all shown recently its incredibly difficult to come out the traps quickly having faced a massive upheaval.

None of that is mentioning the financial risks we would be taken if we again failed to make top 4, which I an only assume would be catastrophic . We already have a huge squad and it is filled with good players perhaps we lack balance, pace up front and a world class CB but no squad is perfect and you simply cannot expect to spend huge amounts constantly plugging gaps. If we go out this summer and add more wages to what is already a colossal wage bill I dont know how the club can justify it really.

We need to keep trimming the fat off the squad. Obviously Falcao wont be here. I'd expect a further 5/6 players out the door with him. Cleverley is definitely gone, then pick any from Evans/Smalling/Jones /Rafael/Mata/RVP/Nani /Hernandez and even possibly Fellaini. Then we should be looking to bring in 1 or two really good players. A CB is obviously the priority, any other position can wait depending on who stays and goes.

Despite the consensus Van Gaal is doing a slightly better job than Moyes in much more difficult circumstances. Moyes had a full pre season with the champions where his only remit was to not completely fuck up. Van Gaal had to contend with coming off a full world cup , having to replace a number of key players in a squad whose confidence is absolutely decimated.
Spending 80 million more than Moyes is a relevant factor but I'd argue what he's had to contend with on top of integrating more players I sympathise with Van Gaal a lot more.

But I'd only be in favour of him staying if he has to work with more or less what he's got. 50 million should be the absolute max we spend this summer whether that goes on 1 top player or two good ones I dont care but if he's not good enough to get us playing better football and finishing top 4 with a squad containing Mata/Rooney/Di Maria as attacking options whilst spending 200 million plus hes simply got no excuses.

A managers job is to manage what hes got to the best of his ability. It's what made Moyes bleating last year about needing new players so offensive. If you cant get anywhere close to the best from what you have got then buying more players isnt going to fix an awful lot.

True, but we could twist it and say Moyes 1 - 0 LVG ?

Was interesting to see Keane say on BBC last night they should never have sacked Moyes.

And that sometimes fans don't have a clue regarding the size of job rebuilding after Ferguson quite entails.

I swear Keane says whatever he thinks will piss Man Utd off the most. His bitter opinion on us should never be taken with any seriousness.

Tbh I'm surprised to see United doing as well as they are given the mess they were in last season and how unbalanced the squad is (as talented as it may be). I really didn't think they'd be 4th with 10 games to go.

Just imagine the state United would be in if they had CL football this season as well.

I think they'll end up 10th with 4 games to go.

In a way they were fortunate that Liverpool started badly and Spurs too as a result of having a new manager that needed to settle with the players. Neither now apply with Liverpool unbeaten in the league since December and Spurs losing just twice in their last 14 games.

United's next two games are against Spurs and Liverpool. If they lose both those games (would that really surprise anyone?), I can see United finishing below both. Which would be fucking hilarious given how much some United fans banged on about Europe last season and how it was the only reason Liverpool did well. I said all along that Europe isn't as much of a distraction as some make out, nor does not having it suddenly make a mediocre team good.

I'd be surprised if Spurs won at Old Trafford. United's home record is superb.

The last decent team they played at home in the league beat them. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Spurs do the same this weekend, especially with United's confidence so low at the moment.

I don't get why there need to be a "rebuilding" period at United. Sure there's a massive change at the club with Ferguson going after so long but big clubs don't have transition periods, they keep winning. Barca, Real, Bayern and Chelsea all sack managers regularly, yet they remain at the top table in Europe regardless.

Those clubs you mentioned didn't have the problem of replacing a manager who had been in his role for over twenty five years though.
