Surprised there hasn’t been a thread done for his game given the amount of fans both clubs have on here.

Carlisle normally come down in decent numbers relative to their distance so look forward to 250 or so making the trip down?

Carlisle have started well winning 3 and drawing and losing 1 while we’ve only 1 won and very disappointingly only got 4 draws, a pretty slow start.

One of those games both would be looking to win, though they bring with them a certain David holdsworth, one of the worst and mostly deluded managers ever seen at field mill, the thought of him and the dark conference days are enough to make me shudder.

As for us, the manager has only a meagre 3 wins in 17 league games, which is pretty dreadful on the face of it. We’re showing signs of improvement and the play has been alright this season, so hopefully that absymal record will start to improve soon, before the fans get restless.

Going for a 2-1 home win

Would very much take a draw in this game. Before the season began, Mansfield would have been heavy favourites for this game and despite us both making contrasting starts, not much has really changed in terms of the quality in both sides, this is likely to be the game where Mansfield get going, while they should be easily the toughest league opposition we've faced since Exeter. We have shown slightly more than quality that we thought we might have, enough to ease some relegation fears but we're not amazing, and now our keeper who started the season so well is out with a broken leg. Instead we'll have Adam Collin in goal, who will be no stranger to having Mansfield stick balls past him.

Expect a Mansfield win. 2 or 3 goals for Mansfield. 1 or none for us, but 1-1 is certainly possible if we're able to frustrate Mansfield as others have.

First away game of the season for me.

Whilst we’ve had wins from our last 3 games, we’ve been pretty much playing with 1 midfielder (Etuhu) and 3 attackers (Yates, Devitt and Hope) with Devitt occasionally dropping back. At times we’ve been completely overrun and bossed in midfield in the last 3 games until another mid has been brought on (Glendon) to give us a bit of control.

We’ve got away with it against mediocre opposition but I think we’ll be punished tomorrow if we start the same. I fear we’ll be overrun in midfield (again) leaving our woefully slow back line exposed to get about arses absolutely shafted. Plus we have a terrible record at Mansfield. I’ve been countless number of times and never seen us win, although I have seen us win promotion there.

Grainger and Fryer both out, so Gillesphey and Adam Collin (he lives in Mansfield) will come in for their first league starts of the season.

Cant see anything other than a demoralising, drubbing defeat.
4-1 to Mansfield.

Nobody has frustrated us other than ourselves so far, I suppose Colchester did a pretty good job mind.

Anything other than a win today and I fear the pressure on DF will start, we have only played at home in the league twice thus far - 3-0 against Newport and 1-1 Colchester after that last second goal.

I think with the home advantage we should be able to win this, but Carlisle will be coming with confidence after the recent wins.

Flitcroft needs to learn to swap it around when the opposition realise how to nullify our 'get it out wide' tactic or it's going to be a long season.

2-1 Mansfield.

Well we won't be able to nullify your get it out wide tactic, full-back positions are our weakest part of the pitch. Though Grainger being out through injury means Gillesphey comes in who might not be as experienced but is faster and in my opinion better defensively than Grainger.

We sort of rely on our wing backs to be on it to be successful, hopeefully you are correct!!

Well if you manage to run at us you may find us to be vulnerable, maybe though that's where you need to be stopped. Hallam Hope isn't averse to getting his hands dirty tracking back and despite letting opponents glide through our defence time and time again all season, we've only conceded once from open play in our last three games. Similarly we've scored in every game so far. The quality of opposition might not have been great but Sheridan clearly has a way of grinding out results that has worked thus far.

The thing with relying on wing backs for your attacking threat is they're vulnerable to turning into full-backs if the opposing team can create enough threat of their own out wide, and especially if they double up in wide areas, which we will. We will play 4-4-fucking-2

We need to try and get CJ Hamlition running at the opposite more, he scares every defence in this division. Our problem has been having 60% possession every game but just not doing much with it, all a bit Arsene Wenger sideways. Walker and Davies need to turn up, been poor last few games. Personally would drop Walker for Rose because he's looked more dangerous than Walker from just coming off the bench with twenty minutes spare.

Lovely sunny day for it. A few beverages in the beer garden might be in order before the game.

Devitt is a superb player but it worries me having him in a midfield 2, particularly against some of the better sides in this league.

I don’t think it suits us from a team point of view and I don’t think it suits him from his own point of view. I think it restricts him.

I probably would play him in front of Jones and Etuhu if Jones was available now, but at the same time I think there's a bit more to come from him as an all-round midfielder.

Dropped Davies for Rose instead of Walker and Benning been dropped harshly to make way for CJ on that left side.

Glendon in instead of Nadesan, to give us better numbers in midfield, though I figure Hope and Yates will push forward into a front three.

Carlisle look like they have no ambition of scoring, we look like we do but have no idea how to do it.

To be fair we have had two sitters, diving header by Rose cleared off the line and a 1 on 1 with the goalkeeper saved.

Referee is incredibly inconsistent with the pushing happening.

sounds like one of those times you get thrashed 1-0. I would say our luck finally ran out but in a way we were still lucky that it took a penalty to beat us.

Well that was a waste of time and money.

Terrible performance from a team of terrible footballers. We were second best throughout the whole match. I didn’t think Mansfield played particularly well, but they still could have won by 4 or 5 if they weren’t so shit in the final third. I have my doubts about the penalty, but we deserved to lose so no complaints really. Getting out of there with a 0-0 would have been undeserved.
I’ve no idea what formation we were supposed to be playing first half, I don’t even think the players knew. It was a truly dismal performance which highlighted what a poor team we are.

We are lucky that we’ve managed to scrape some results recently because it’s given us a little bit of breathing space because really this team belongs in the bottom 4. I just hope bottom 4 is as bad as it will get and we somehow don’t end up in the bottom 2 and relegated come May. We have some decent midfielders to be fair (although not today) but defensively we’re a shambles and have an awful attack lead by Richie what the fuck is he meant to be doing Bennett. That’s about the size of it.

Only positive from today is our goal difference didn’t take a hammering.

So that’s another year of never seeing us play well at Mansfield. We’re just shit every time we play there, even in previous years when we’ve had a competent side we’ve still been shit at Mansfield.

That was absymal - Carlisle were shite to be fair and we were at best average.

We must of had 4/5 chances that should have gone in, our quality in the final third was a joke, I don't think Carlisle had a shot untill half-way through the second half. Tyler Walker scored the penalty and won the game but he was once again poor.

The star of the show was the referee who put in a shambolic performance, penalty looked soft but I need to see that again. The best bit was when a Carlisle player took his boot off and decided to it would take 10 minutes to put it back on, they had a free-kick and the referee insisted they take it but the player just ingored him and waited for what felt like a century to let his team-mates put his boot back on.

He literally let the players referee the play, and was inconsistent with his decisions throughout.

did Mansfield have a goalkeeper? I listened on the radio and didn't hear anything to suggest there was anyone in goal for them. Maybe they went with 11 outfield players. Hell if I was managing a team playing us, I'd name 11 outfield players.

Carlisle came and offered nothing and got exactly what they deserved, nothing. Bloody piss poor effort.

350 fans from Carlisle is a good effort, and Sheridan and the Carlisle players offered them absolutely sod all.

Mansfield themselves were average and missed a string of sitters in the 2nd half to double the lead. I find it odd Carlisle have won 3 games playing those tactics, which would suggest Sheridan maybe got it wrong today.

Nervy from Mansfield, and a milestone for me. I actually saw flitcroft win a home game. Whoop.

To be fair the most important thing today was to win, considering it's the first time we have since the opening day in the league.

I just hope we can rally from this and get a proper run together, it's a tough month mind and im sure we will see our first defeat soon.

True, we’ve not got a recognised competitive fixture now for a fortnight which is a shame given the win.

Exeter will be tough

Based on one game, Mansfield will have to be much better in the final third if they want to trouble the top 7 this season.

They obviously have the players, but something doesn’t look quite right.

Today they played against an absolute shambolic mess of a team with a woeful defence, yet needed a softish? penalty to win. There’s probably 20 teams (at least) better than Carlisle that won’t concede anywhere near as many golden opportunities, so Mansfield will certainly have to improve their end product.

But at least you aren’t Carlisle United.
