Hi guys, Ian here. I'm just wondering if we could have some clarification of what are the actual rules on this forum? We've seen in politics forum thread (that shall remain unnamed) some pretty awful ableist language, which according to saddler, isn't to be tolerated. However we have seen it unofficially endorsed by a mod via the 'like' button, here:


This isn't intended to single out fine mods, such as JJH or even finer forum regulars, such as Abertawe. A debate is needed however, and some clarification would be welcome. The forum rules seem kind of 'ad-hoc', in so far as they have been developed in response to issues. The whole personal info bill came about in response to Dave's snooping and someone reporting the issue to the police, when it should have been codified beforehand to prevent such issues developing: proactive rather than reactive.

We've also seen some rather childish threats of violence, which I tend to think shouldn't be tolerated neither, but was in fact endorsed by a mod.



Some clarification would be welcome.

I do really like this forum, but everyone seems to be under the impression it's getting a bit, well, poop, lately. The state of the politics forum in particular isn't great. I'm not blaming anyone, I'm probably at fault to an extent too, it would be nice to hear from some mods on what they'd like to change or what developments they'd welcome. I am pretty irked about the ableist language on display on this forum though, 'retard' in all its many permutations is not a good word, and we should not be allowing it's usage on here.

(Also it'd be nice to hear if the report button is working because I've had no feedback from any posts I've reported, hence the decision to open it to a public discussion)

The politics forum is a clusterfuck because one or two can't have a reasoned debate without getting personal as pointed out above. I've put forward someone who should mod the politics forum. I also believe some people need time off from the forum. At the moment apart from deleting posts and closing threads there isn't much I can do without Admin help. Perhaps some mods should be given more power to resolve a situation quicker instead of waiting for admin to get back to us. Up to AFCB_Mark TractorBoys tho.

Like I say I'm waiting on admin until anything can be done at this point.

In the 'real world', 'disability' (including learning difficulties, etc.) is one of the nine protected characteristics, including gender, race and so on. Discrimination includes: harassment - unwanted behaviour linked to a protected characteristic that violates someone’s dignity or creates an offensive environment for them. Obviously there is nothing more important than Banter, but could we try and avoid ableist, homophobic or misogynistic language on here? The English language is amazing, full of colourful and creative ways to insult people; relying on cheap digs at people's impairments or choice of sexual partner isn't witty, it's discriminatory and doesn't help create a welcoming environment or foster that sense of community cohesion we need. There are more important things than our right to call people fags or mongs willy-nilly

Because it is clear to see that you have ulterior motives hence why you felt that you couldn't just discuss the offending posts in question but also bring up the fact a mod has liked them. Talking of making things personal as well, you didn't want to single anyone out but felt the need to use 2 examples including the same member and same mod. Quite happy to make things personal when it suits your argument I see.

Let's not forget that you wanting to 'improve' the forum is clearly ironic considering the fact that you have broken rule after rule in the past. I mean your current profile is hardly the only one you have on 1FF (I find multiple accounts pretty sad to be honest) and is in fact one you set up when your previous one was banned.

If your ambition in life is to become a mod on 1FF then that is fine but start a dialogue with a member of the admin team and tell them why they are missing out by not having you as a member of their staff. I am not saying some of the discussions on this forum are right but I am certainly able to dismiss it for what it is and not give these people any further time. Ratting people out and starting threads like this just stinks of desperation to me

I would quite like to be one of course, but I'd also like to see a better Politics forum as I spend most of my time there and it has the potential of being a really good forum. I have not '[ratted]' people out, but this isn't a prison yard - this is a forum for polite debate and some of the comments are bang out of order. I did attempt to keep this private, I've been relying exclusively on the 'report' function for posts that I deem to have crossed the line. I've received no feedback or clarification on what the line exactly is, however, hence me opening it up to public discussion (or score-settling for people who pipped others to coveted Newcomer awards).

The politics forum is a cancer at the moment. The language and tone used would have gotten Abertawe banned from the majority of Internet forums and punched in public. You can debate without adding an insult to the end of every post, he raises interesting points every now and then, but hostility breeds hostility in return and kills debate. That's pretty reasonable to expect of a forum - we might get more ideas posted in the politics forum if it wasn't such a cesspool. It currently is no better than YouTube comments.

As most know I used to be a mod over at the old place. Looking back it's a thankless task and not something I would agree to do again.
As for rules there does need to be well published guidelines so there is a line for certain things that shouldn't be crossed. There's always members who get warned and pipe up and say "show me the rules"
Doesn't need to be many, but it means mods and members know what isn't acceptable and accept the slap on the knuckles without complaint when they overstep the mark.

If you were a mod Ian you would do too much to make things better which would result in other mods taking a back seat and letting you run the show in my opinion. A good mod team is a team that sings off the same hymn sheet and maybe you just wouldn't fit into the mould. That was certainly the case with me.

True, the mods on here (for the most part, there are a few notable exceptions especially TA) tend to do precisely fuck all.

T.A is the most active mod and certainly ensure the League 1 forum is a decent place to post. Mowgli deserves his credit for his work with the likes of Carver in League 2, he's more like his social worker than a mod

I can't comment on mods of only one section other than the PL/Championship mods, for obvious reason. I don't tend to venture down to the L1/L2 sections.
