Genius or pretentious rubbish?

Okay, I'm a 50 something prog rock fan, so I'm probably biased, but I've like Muse since they covered Feelin' Good. The new stuff sounds pretty good although slightly less proggy than some of their older output.

New album out on Monday, I'll be buying it.

Genius up to and including Black Holes and Revelations, ok since then but nowhere near the same level.

^^ that.

I've gone off them in recent years but hearing Knights of Cydonia at Radio 1's Big Weekend (I know) reignited my love for them.

awful stuff, whiny frontman who can't dress himself, just more M.O.R rubbish.

Their latest album is really good. It has grown on me and Reapers is the best song they've done in years. Dem riffs!

I think it looks hit and miss. Some of the new ones like The Handler and Reapers are some of their best individual songs since Absolution, but others like Mercy and Dead Inside are terrible reminders of where they lost the plot in the last two albums. Also lyrically it's the worst album they've ever made, as good old school main riff is for Psycho the cringeworthy lyrics sadly detracted from it. That said, I think it's still likely their best album since Black Holes and Revelations and a reassuring move away from the last two very forgettable albums. They won't make an album as good or original as Origin of Symmetry again, but it's nice to see they've evolved and progressed from sterile, overproduced electro-rock and bombastic silliness like Survival onto something more interesting.

While not as good as Black Holes or Absolution I think, naff lyrics aside, this could be their most enjoyable album to listen to since Origin. All three of them sound like they've gotten much better at writing music of late, there's a definite quality in a lot of these new songs that's been missing since Absolution. Perhaps not as mainstream as the last three albums, but it could be a surprising hit among long-term fans.

Still torn on whether to see them or Marilyn Manson next Saturday at download, but very much like and the new stuff is sounding really good.
