The National League has called an EGM for all member clubs on Thursday at 2pm. The agenda includes an update on the Salary Cap Working Group & the new Standards and Ethics Committee. Clubs will also receive a commercial update & the League's annual accounts.

Are the NL even likely to vote for a salary cap?

I doubt a wage cap would suit this level where do you even start putting a figure on it? too much of a huge gap between the likes of Wealdstone/Weymouth and those with budgets 5-6 times that. If it does come in some will be royally stuffed, unless they go up of course.

It's also not like the EFL where every club is full-time as budgets tend to be far closer from the club at the bottom of the league to that at the top.

The BELTs down here, specifically Stockport and Wrexham probably have a budget 5 times what ours is. That's not a dig at those clubs by the way, they've got the support base, infrastructure and sponsorship to justify that. We're part-time and every year supporters are having to chip in to boost the budget.

It's a totally pointless task trying to implement a salary cap down here.

Same in L1 really, last season you had Accy with theirs, which is maybe £2m and Sunderland at £20m+, which was why L1 was so split on the decision but L2 were unanimous.

The tinpot clubs will probably try it, but I can't see it passing legally. What are we supposed to do with our extra revenue?

A percentage based on revenue makes more sense, and would serve to prevent clubs from living beyond their means.

It doesn't, that's the problem. We run that in the EFL on the 50% (L2) and 60% (L1) rule, which is the SCMP but it's flimsy, with loopholes and not worth a wank basically.

SCMP is the reason L1 and L2 sides pushed for salary caps instead, which was a very solid rule. Of course, that meant Sunderland could never spend to their full potential and meant, in theory, Accrington could be bankrolled above their level to reach the salary cap ceiling.

The answer is somewhere in between i.e. real time monitoring of Club finances.

I meant in theory. Clubs always find loopholes, look at Manchester City.

Wasn't the salary cap in lge 1 and 2 deemed illegal after the PFA got involved? Why do the NL think they can get it through?

Annoyingly for years we were financially trampled on by the likes of Salford, Fylde, Harrogate and for a short time North Ferriby but now that we've had a 'lottery' win people including hypocritical Haythornthwaite at Fylde suddenly want a salary cap.

No worries SoC, it came up on our forum, no other info and I could not find anything elsewhere, so thought I would put it up.

Yeah it was, but I think there was a vote on it at this level and the majority of clubs voted in favour of it? I could have mis-remembered that though. If that was the case then an update either to give some details about how they're gonna try and go ahead with it or that it's dead in the water makes sense.

Aye but Lge 1 and 2 clubs also voted for it. The PFA challenged it and won saying it was against the constitution for the Professional Football Negotiating and Consultative Committee.

I guess the NL are not part of this committee so believe they can force it through?

The PFA took legal action on the basis that they weren't consulted as they should have been. I don't think it would have been overturned as quickly had that happened because it was a pretty silly and basic thing for the EFL to fail to do.

They said it "may be" unlawful but didn't give any evidence that it was, and didn't need to because the EFL dropped a bollock.

I don't think the EFL Clubs were obliged to listen to the PFA on that subject, just consult.
