Think they'd have been better off with Nigel Clough. He'd have kept them up and turned them in to a boring midtable side.

Time will tell of course, but I don't rate Redfearn as a manager. Not sure he's the man to keep them up.

I think Redfearn will become a very good manager.

Hope your right, were looking at fetching more players through from the academy and he's got a good record at doing that and developing them into decent players, but you also need other qualities like motivation skills, tactical awareness, and being able to work under pressure ect, time will tell if this is a good appointment.

Seems the cheap option but I remember not being overly enamoured by Evans' appointment and two season's later we're a Championship club so prepared to give him full support.

One thing's for sure, if he gets his players playing like he did as a player we're in for a treat as he was a good, good player.

As an aside, was shocked to see the Durch Mourinho not manage to mastermind a result in the first 'big' pressure game he's had this season.

Thought he'd be able to get something there, well if you listen to the Derburton inbreds.

Now all the Millers need is a decent song. Defending the glory of Rotherham and high-number Sheffield postcodes and that. And getting ready to shed the sweat.

He's the man in charge so I back him. He's a Miller now. At least he's not Andy Scott !!. Dark days them ! Or worst of all Dave Cusack ! pitch black then. My neck never recovered from the Cusack days, I'm an expert of cloud forms now, (all your nimbus, and strati-wotsits). He only lasted a few months, thankfully. What crazy days, 2500 crowds (and fewer at times) to watch 0-0's & 0-1's. I'm sure we had mostly sub 3k crowds that season at Millmoor and the football was bloody awful. 1986-7 or prob might have been 87/88. Anyone remember Cusack !

Look, whatever happens Millers, we will always be Millers...........get behind the new manager. We are all Millers ! We are not going to become Man U fans to 'feel big' about ourselves, no matter what league we are in, Championship or National League. Like many other hard up towns, with historic clubs, we have traits of LOYALTY & solidarity & that's massive. It takes effort. Following your Man U and your Bayern Munich (or whoever is fashionable that year is nowt special) Remember that terrible time, when certain people (not Ken Booth by the way) stitched us up and the resultant administrations in a couple of years. Then the loss of our spiritual home and the trek to Don Valley.

Forwards my friends, forwards ! ............

On that note ... a big big biggidy bong & shout out in da area for GRIMSBY TOWN, TRANNERE ROVERS & long time personal fave (other team) of mine HALIFAX TOWN. There are others, but I always felt the first two were very much alike with RUFC. All power to you, hope to see you all back in the FL soon.

Fair to say Redfearn has some big trousers to fill at Rotherham!

But seriously, Leeds rated him highly, could be a good appointment if given a large remit at the club and plenty of time.

Did a really good job with our kids and wasn't afraid to throw them in the first team. Will be well-liked by players and staff I imagine but I guess the concern is whether he's tactically astute. His record for us was decent last year but whatever happened, he had the fans on side because of the way Cellino treated him all year...so the errors of judgement he made were swept under the carpet somewhat.

Hard to say how it will turn out but he's a good guy so wish him well.

Is there a 'I've seen a Jesus shaped stain on my (....insert towel, sheet, garden fence panel etc, as appropriate..........) thread on here? I saw Steve Evans in my Stella froth last Friday night, scared the crap out of me. I stood there and contemplated for a full 30 seconds. Being a Yorkshireman I didn't waste it....drank it anyways. Tasted like bitter !

IMO this shows a much needed change of direction in the way the club is run. No more the Delboy Evans method of stack em high and seller cheap (or more like stack em high then chuck em out) as the club obviously cannot afford to keep doing that, at any level.

Evo promised us a roller coaster ride and he delivered, he promised us championship football and he delivered on that too, the last three years watching the Millers are the joint best ever in my time, along with the Ian Porterfield/Emlyn Hughes teams and the Ronnie years, so no, I won't have a bad word against a simply fantastic manager.

Thing is, he's only short term, isn't he? The conveyor belt at NYS has been more like a combine harvester with the players it has chewed up and spat out. But in this haste for a winning team (by no means a bad aim) what of the youngsters? Alec Denton? Binned, Mitchell Rose? Binned, and so it goes on.

Now we have a manager that will (I hope) build a solid core of a team, one that will truly develop the young players here like JCH and Derby's Rawson etc, while also coaching and developing those on the fringes of first team action, rather then putting them on the bus to the nearest L2 club like Stevo did.

Let's just hope we can get that stability and still survive as a championship club. It may all go horribly wrong, of course, but this could be the best thing to happen to us. Now we just need Thommo back from Preston to complete the team.

I had a good laugh earlier when I heard Redfearn say he could get them promoted to the Premier League. At least he can take up a career as a comedian, if it doesn't quite work out.

Worth remembering that he did it on a sound financial footing as well, with Rotherham profitable and free of debt (at least until 2013/14 accounts). You could do a lot worse. Many Championship cubs are financial basket-cases.

Easy to mock Redfearn's ambitions, but other clubs have come close to the PL on modest budgets. Arguably Burnley have done it.

Beaufighter, I agree with most of your sentiment, but Stewart knew what he was getting with Evans (or at least you'd like to think so). If, as the accounts suggest we've two divisions higher on a reasonable budget, then even taking into account the innumerate pay-offs, it's turned out to be a good gamble.

Redfearn is a gamble, too. First team Manager is a lot different to reserve team and youth team, and there's nothing to say he's any good at it (yes, he had his hands tied before, but not enough scope from results to suggest he'll be a good first team Manager).

I hate myself for saying this after all he's done for us, but I'm frustrated by Tony Stewart at the moment. You can't go out and get the cheap option Manager and then release daft soundbites about the Premiership. It's pointless linking ourselves with £1m strikers and then going out and signing unproven lads or loan rejects. It's a bit Del-Boy ish. Pretending you're shopping at Harrods while most with any trace of a braincell can see you haven't got the proverbial pot to pee in. I assume he must think Millers fans are a bit stupid after 4 years of this.

Realistically we've done well to get here in such a short space, but without investment on and off the field we'll be back down to our natural level of third division football. And there's no shame in that, but don't try an pull the wool over our eyes. Even the media darlings Bournemouth spent a hell of a lot comparatively (and even more when you consider the size of their club) to reach their goal, despite what's purported by the press.

Personally, I'd rather go down a league and face all the local sides and be competitive than what we have at the moment. But that would lose incredible sums of money and investment. If we're not filling the retail units at present, we won't be in the lower divisions.

I look at it differently to you. Of course TS knew what he was getting with Evans, that's why he went to get him. But that job is now done, we move on to the next phase. I believe that TS talked to Evans at great length about stopping the conveyor belt and getting some stability into the club and developing our own players. He hinted on the radio about how we can't sign so many loan players next season with the rule changes there. I think the "mutual parting of the ways" was all about that because Evans doesn't work that way. I don't see Redfearn as "the cheap option" as you put it. I think he was genuinely the best qualified available to us for the job TS has in mind. Whether that judgement is flawed or not remains to be seen. It may be a mistake, but what if it isn't? What If it's exactly what we needed to do? We aren't going to top 10,000 attendances regularly, we don't get sky money like several in this league so what's the alternative? Spend ourselves to oblivion hoping to hang onto the coat tails of Bournemouth? No thanks.

If Redfearn is the cheap option, what was the alternative, because I was hoping for Redfearn from the start?

I think you've interpreted my post differently than the sentiment I was trying to present.

I, like you, stated I'd rather go down than try and spend our way into the promised land only to fall back flat on our face (again).

I don't think your point on Sky money is too relevant, as the money from just being in the division is a lot higher than a £75k - £100k received per Sky viewing (well unless you're Derby and you're on 15 times a season). But no, we're never going to compete with the bigger clubs in the division and nor should we be.

We'll never know what happened fully between Evans and Stewart but the most likely rumour is to do with one specific loan and breaking of the sanctioning rules whilst Stewart himself was abroad. There may be some substance in that given that loan player then declined the opportunity to extend his loan when all indicators suggested he was ready to. I'd suggest that is harsh on Evans given him himself didn't go near the agreement of money (I'm sure it would either have been Richard Stewart or Paul Douglas in Tony Stewart's absence) but again I'm speculating on what may or may not have been which seems pretty futile.

As for Redfearn, the cheap option seems pretty clear cut. Not attached so no compensation package and given his lack of managerial experience you'd think we'd be getting him at less than the going rate than said post.

Clough and Gray may have commanded higher wages (I didn't want either). Clearly we weren't bold or stupid enough to offer large packages to the likes of Pearson or Warnock. Similarly given rumours about Walsall and Burton turning down approaches for their Manager, it seems our approach was rather meek. Compare and contrast to Barnsley poaching Robins (from under Stewart) five years or so ago and it shows if you're dogged enough and the overall package is good enough, you can force the managers to resign. Considering our last manager was Steve Evans, it's hardly likely we shyed away from the aforementioned approach from an ethical standpoint.

I'm not against Redfearn. I'm not even expecting him to do badly. I'm just saying he's an unknown quantity. I don' mind that, but talk of the Premiership goes beyond ambitious to blind bonkers. If we do think that (which is a tad embarrassing) then perhaps we should keep it under our hat?

Fairly happy with him as the new manager. Will be nice to see youth actually being given a chance now. :bg:
