Roy's done after the Euros in all likelihood, so who do you want as the next England manager and why?

I'd like Gary Neville to get the gig. He's a familiar and respected member of the setup and would transition easily. I think his expertise and nous for the modern game would be the breath of fresh air we're long overdue.

If were going for a foreign manager I'd like to see someone in the Roberto Martinez or Roberto Di Matteo mould. I like their attacking/exciting style of football.

If they want to give it to an Englishman, probably give it to somebody like Garry Monk. Think it needs to go to someone who has managed before, rather than to someone like Gary Neville.

Di Matteo? Deary me.

Hodgson might be in luck because there's such a dearth of options. Rodger's stock has fallen, Pardew and Monk are currently in fashion but are still nothing more than mid-table managers, Neville has no experience and pointing something clever out on Sky Sports is no guarantee of success.

Just get Howe cos he's cool as fuck.

What's wrong with Di Matteo? His managerial career has been very impressive so far.

I think Michael Laudrup would be another good option as a foreign manager.

Controversial but Sam Alladcryce is available as a English option

Garry Monk finished eighth in his first season as a manager. Bit early to label him as nothing more than a mid table manager of you ask me.

To answer the original question, I think it's between Gary Neville and Gareth Southgate.

Agree about Laudrup, he's always done well and think he was a little unlucky to lose his job at Swansea.

I think result wise Sam Alladyce would be ok-ish, although I think his style of play would be a big turn off. All his success at domestic level has come through long ball tactics, and I don't think it would work well against other countries with the England players at his disposal. Think the fans would be quick to turn on him too.

Depends what route the FA want to go, can we really say we've gone forward under Hodgson by getting an English manager in? No has to be the answer, so as long as the manager fits the criteria, I can't see a problem with getting a foreign manager in.

If he continues as he is I could see Tim Sherwood being in contention, he certainly can improve form of players (may be on a week by week basis) however according to the barclays premier league website Sherwood's premier league record he has a 51% win record.

Neville should have been earning his stripes with the under 21s during the last tournament. Southgate can't be trusted to make a brew.

What's wrong with Di Matteo? His managerial career has been very impressive so far.

He did alright with MK Dons but ultimately failed by not getting promotion. He was expected to get promotion with West Brom and did so convincingly, but was sacked in February the next year after 13 defeats in 18 games. The fluky Champions League win aside, he failed miserably at Chelsea - finishing 6th in the league behind Newcastle. That European success should have been enough to buy him another season, but he would have got sacked eventually anyway. And then failing to qualify for the Champions League with that Schalke side isn't really good enough.

He's an alright manager but he desperately needs to get back into management and hold down a job longer than a year and a half before you could even entertain the idea of him being up to scratch. Is he particularly attacking/exciting anyway? I wouldn't say so.

I didn't mean it in a harsh way, I like Monk. But he's still very experienced and all he's done at Swansea is carry on the good work, as opposed to transforming the way they play. The way he dealt with Bony's departure was impressive though, I'll give him that.

And with mentions of Allardyce, Southgate and Sherwood, that's me done with this thread.

I can only assume you didn't follow his car crash campaign in Germany last year.

His domestic form wasn't great I'll agree, but he did alright in the Champs League, got a decent win away at Real Madrid. I think we could do a lot worse than RDM, judging on who we've given the job to do in the past.

Its not Di Matteo's fault. Jefferson Farfan was injured for most of the season. Not much you can do without your only good player.

Gary Neville? Yeah, let's give the biggest management job in the country to someone who has never been a football manager in his life. Just because he's far more articulate and insightful than the dullards that Sky and co. hire usually that doesn't mean he's fit to manage the national team. Personally I kind of hope that Liverpool has a poor season and we get Rodgers in there.

Originally liked your comment for the Neville stuff, but retracted when I got to Rodgers. Not him, please, god.

Allardyce? Southgate? Dear God. Would rather stick with Hodgson.

Rodgers seems too unstable, and doesn't exactly have a great record when the pressure is really on.

Neville needs to do a lot more before he could be considered. Talking and drawing pictures on a pitch for Sky is no way to get the England job.

Would Wenger give it 4 years once he finally steps aside at Arsenal? He'd know most if not all the players and knows all the media crap inside out.

There are no obvious choices. The FA would just have to throw it out there and see what applications come in. Laudrup is an interesting if slightly left field pick, not the worst suggestion in the world.

Said this in 2011:

Arsene Wenger said:
“I always told you, for me the national team needs an English manager and I will never change my opinion on that for one minute,” said Wenger.

“I keep my exact principle and it is important for you as well because if a foreign manager wins a European Championship you will say somewhere it is not completely an English triumph.”

The racist.

I don't think for one minute he should get the job yet. But Eddie Howe is one to keep an eye on for the future if he keeps his current rate of progression up.
