Strange year with us. He was outstanding at RWB in the first half of the season but vanished in the second half when Brandon Cooper who had played alongside him at right centreback was recalled by Swansea, his crosses just dried up. He then did well at RCB in the last few games with Lewis outside him. Obviously he wouldn't turn down a massive club like Salford.

Jimmy Keohane signs a new two-year deal. Can play any outfield position, and scored 10 goals last season from wing back/full back. Looking at our squad and its lack of defensive numbers, he'll probably end up there again.

In the worst kept secret going our out of contract keeper Joel Dixon has signed a 2 year deal at Bolton.

Sad to see him go, but you can't turn down the opportunity to become the best keeper League One has ever seen.

What’s he like?
Salt and vinegar discos. Fan joke.
He started off really badly but improved this season, he then became the scapegoat for poor performances under Keith Hill. He would be a decent signing in this division or a very good signing in the National League.

He has plenty of games under his belt for his age.
When i say for his age its relative. 28 seems young when we have Peter Clarke playing for us. He is 40 in january.

So this is what we've got minus the loan players

GK

Ben Killip (out of contract)
Brad Young (off to Leicester)

DEF

Timi Odusina (option exercised)
David Ferguson
Gary Liddle (out of contract)
Ryan Johnson (out of contract) supposedly off to Vale.
Zaine Francis Angol (out of contract)
Jamie Sterry (out of contract)

MID

Nicky Featherstone (out of contract)
Mark Shelton (option exercised)
Gavan Holohan
Tom Crawford
Ryan Donaldson (out of contract)
Luke Molyneux (out of contract)
Claudio Ofuso (out of contract)
Josh Macdonald
Luke Williams (out of contract)

FOR

Rhys Oates (out of contract)
Danny Elliot (out of contract)
Joe Grey
Mason Bloomfield (out of contract)

So as you can see, a ton of work to do.

I'd keep Killip on a 1+1 deal, and get in Brad James as no.2 on loan again for the year.

In defence, I'd try and get Lewis Cass back from the Toon on loan. He is quality. Jamie Sterry, give him a 10 year deal, retain Gary Liddle on a 1 year deal. If Ryan Johnson wants to stay, keep him as well.

In midfield, controversial but I'd keep Ryan Donaldson for another year. He's versatile and pretty vital off the pitch if you believe the other players. Featherstone on another year or a 1+1. Molyneux is a league quality player but can't get in our side as we don't play wingers. I'm expecting him to leave. Ofuso and Williams get rid.

Forwards, it's important to push the boat out for Luke Armstrong but we won't come close to offering 3k a week that Harro£ate allegedly have. Rhys Oates, pay him what he wants, Danny Elliit, keep on a one year deal. Send Joe Grey out on loan to a lower NL or North side until the new year. Release Bloomfield.

So all in all, if we renew those I said, I'd say we need one or two defenders, another centre mid, one winger and probably two strikers. 5 or 6 signings needed on top of the renewals.

If we manage that, I think we'll be fine.

Hopefully the 750k or 1m you get as a L2 club will boost the budget plus whatever Leicester pay for Brad Young. I'll also buy a home shirt for the first time since about 2003 so we can add 40 quid into that. We also can't run the club as stripped down as before so hire some extra staff, spruce up the ground a bit and look to put the infrastructure back in that we once had.

They’ve got some work to do, 8 contracted players and DC reckons he wants around 20 more players to round off the squad, probably see the released list today I’d imagine, I have a horrible feeling that Rhys Oates is off, really hope he at least stays for another season.

How did you rate Danny Elliott? When he came to Vale he hadn’t played at any level of note but thought he showed some decent attributes that could have been developed if the club wasn’t a total shitshow at that time. Now he’s had a few more years experience I could see him adjusting to League 2.

Was a very much a bit part player, we probably had the strongest front two down there in Oates and Armstrong so it was hard to break them up, I liked what I saw though, seemed decent on the ball with a turn of pace, he's still relatively young and has time to develop so I'd offer him a deal for this season if he was interested.

Hartlepool fans might be worried, as looking at that list it doesn't sound like they have too many players contracted for next season...however, I would be inclined to see that as a positive. FGR came up to the league and started with largely the same squad that had earned promotion, with just a few additions, and struggled really badly until after the January transfer window when a few half decent players were brought in. At least Hartlepool can build a squad to start the season, with the aim of keeping them in the league, rather than trying to patch over the cracks when their position isn't what they would have hoped.

The squad looks a bit ropey at the minute and we have very little wiggle room but of those out of contract realistically I think we could lose three, maybe four of them to different clubs, worse case scenario those I could see us leaving are Johnson/Sterry/Featherstone/Oates, I'd imagine all the rest who are offered deals will sign on.

I think we'd all be happy to just finish away from relegation this season and re-establish ourselves as a Football League team again and go from there, I never, ever want to go back down to that hell hole league again.

Aye that’s pretty much how I saw it with him. Nice option to have off the bench. If the timing had been better would have complimented Rodney quite well I feel.

Reckon Hartlepool will be fine next season. I look at the majority of teams and there isn’t a great deal between most of us. The only club I’d say who should be worried right now are Scunny. I think it’s going to be a very hard slog for them to survive as it stands.

The last two out of contract players at Dale have made their decision. Veteran Centre Back Jim McNulty has a one year contract as player/coach. However Matt Lund hasn't been able to agree terms - if he stays fit, would do a good job in L1 (good fit at Crewe, with their talented youngsters?) or L2 (Vale/Bradford/Mansfield??) Someone prepared to offer a better wage than us will get a good player...

Couldn’t imagine it’d be us as think we’ve got enough attacking midfielders already. Very decent player and if we’d sold Conlon would be a good option but in our case would be a bit of a luxury now.

Yeah, same position as Conlon (who was the best player on the pitch when we played you last pre-season, so no surprise to me he's done so well).

Is Theo Robinson still at yours? Always thought he was decent. We don't desperately need a striker at the moment, but if someone higher up the leagues comes in with an acceptable offer for Steve Humphrys, we might do soon. Theo might fit the bill as a replacement if he's surplus at Vale.

There’s a suggestion we’re interested though not from the usual itk sources, so don’t know how credible it is.

On Pools, we had the core of our NL squad still with us as we got promoted again, so continuity not a bad thing, but doesn’t sound like you’ll manage to keep the bulk of your squad together?

He’s still under contract for another year but DC put him alongside a couple others on the transfer list when he did the mass cull of out of contract players. The issue with offloading Theo is we did give him a very good contract when he signed which as he is perfectly entitled to do isn’t going to let go of that very easily. My guess is if he goes somewhere it’ll have to be some kind of loan deal where we pay X amount of the wages.

I think with Theo he never worked out here as he just isn’t suited to that lone striker role which Askey to a fault would almost never deviate from. When DC came in he did get a lot better as had Rodney alongside him do all his running for him.

Funny you said that about Matt Lund, he was originally in our Academy but left for Stoke with Ben Marshall before he could make a senior appearance for us. We won't be in for him mind, as Shaun McDonald has just signed for us.

I'd have taken him at our place mind, but our priority is bringing in an LB and a centre half or two.

I tend to ignore speculation about potential signings. Its enough to just wait and see what we get.

Lol, I’m the opposite, enjoy all the guessing games and end up looking at the rumoured signings history, clips in action. Most of them don’t happen though.
