in fairness, the last 2 games we’ve massively improved on that side. Our use of the ball was much better and we weren’t giving it away anywhere near as often and as cheaply as we had been.

i agree that pointless possession is meaningless, but good possession is important. If you keep giving the ball straight to the opposition you will struggle as we’ve seen in recent months. Thankfully we seem to have found our feet in terms of keeping it higher up the pitch and Garner has helped with it.
I remember our discussion a couple of months ago regarding our possession.

The way you wrote it came across as if you wanted us to keep any kind of possession. I misunderstood and said that aiming for a certain possession figure was meaningless.

I think now looking back we were both wanting the same thing, though explaining it from different angles.

We had glimpses of it in the first leg and for the majority of the second leg. Possession backed up by pressing high. Losing the ball, then regaining it back high up the pitch.

I'd call it possession with intent.

Push up the pitch. Force the opposition back. If you lose the ball your opponents have a long way to travel to cause damage. It creates defensive pressure on them having to keep their defensive line 20 yards from goal for long periods. It leads to mistakes.

This kind of play still results in low possession percentages, because the other team knock it around their backline trying to find a way out, though importantly what it does give you is territory.

Stockport County.
Tickets for carlisle have finished on 14,800

Apparently Stockport are still selling tickets.
We put ours on sale 2 days after you.

I don't think we'll get many more now, anyone inclined to go will have already sorted it.

Yeah I don’t think I explained myself well at the time. It was at the time where we were constantly giving the ball away cheaply resulting in the ball nearly always coming back. It was doing my head. I just wanted us to be better with our ball possession, not necessarily to dominate it. Possession with intent is a good way of describing it.

I do think the reintroduction of Garner has helped. He splits the fanbase but I’m a big fan, he keeps us up the pitch. As good a poacher Dennis is, the ball does come back a lot when it’s played up to him. I hope Simmo sticks with the Garner/Gordon partnership on Sunday, it looked good.

Pathetic that Wembley have changed their minds re selling on the day. This has shit on a fair few of our fans in the south who were planning on taking advantage of this option.

Former champions elect Stockport are the out right favourites to win tomorrow, but I have no doubt that we will give it everything.

Good luck Stockport. After the behaviour of the Carlisle fans after our semi final last week where they were hurling objects into our fans which included one of our young female fans being hit and badly cut on the face, I hope you smash them

To anyone going to Wembley, a good trick to play on stewards is to pretend you are bringing some pints back to the seats under a jacket.
You wont see them move as fast all day and the look on their face when they see you are pintless is a picture.

You mean when a very small minority of your fans were hurling objects as well as a very small minority of ours? I saw it so don’t say it didn’t happen.

But yeah, keep with this “the behaviour of the Carlisle fans” narrative as if we were all at it.

Anyway, heading down to London soon, but looking ahead to tomorrow… After two encouraging performances against Bradford City we at least go in to this with some confidence after our poor end to the season. We start as big underdogs with polar opposite form. We are playing the form team of league 2 and it’s going to take one hell of a performance and a big off day from Stockport for us to win, but we are here on merit and hopefully we really do have a go. Last weeks performance should give us encouragement but I think we’ll need to be even better to bridge the gap.

I’m hoping we can do it because it would be a miraculous achievement and massive for the club and fans after years of utter shite, failure and disappointment. We’re in it and you’ve got to be in it to win it, but being realistic with what we’re up against its hard to see anything other than a Stockport win and their second successive promotion. Pains me to say it.

Stockport County 2-0 Carlisle United

And then a long trip home. Overall good season but it won’t feel like it after defeat.

Nothing like a positive attitude going into a one off match

I agree, we have our fair share of stone island chavs who pretend to be hard men. However, why did hundreds of your fans run on the pitch towards our fans at the end to taunt us, should have been celebrating your good win instead.

You don’t start as big underdogs in anybody else’s head but yours though you do realise that, right?

Our top goal scorer/player of the year is out injured and we have a number of other key players nowhere near proper match fitness.

The ‘form team in the division’ lost to Salford at their place two weeks ago and drew against already relegated Hartlepool the week before.

They may as well just give you the play off trophy now because there's no way we're winning this one.

The bookies have Stockport County as favourites.

The promo below even makes reference to Carlisle United being underdogs…

You finished above us in the league, you got the better of us in previous meetings this season. We are every bit the underdogs. i don’t know how you can deny it.

I didn’t see anything special by either side in the games mansfield played against them and didn’t lose any game. however they made it and we didn’t.

No preference on who goes up, but i hope whoever does they stop up and enjoy it.

You said you were “big underdogs”. Which is just rubbish.

And were speaking like it would be a huge shock. There were three points separating us in the league, we drew when we played a month ago and we’re now missing our player of the season and our second and third top goalscorers are nowhere near 100 per cent.

There is nothing in it. If you want to suggest you’re slight underdogs then I don’t agree but fair enough but to suggest you’re “big underdogs” is ridiculous.

To be fair of all the sides around the playoffs I was more impressed by Mansfield.

Only side I didn’t want to face in the playoffs until we got decimated by injuries/fitness worries - now I think anybody should be able to see us off!

Curzon Ashton....and Carlisle
I think Carlisles starting attitude is going to be an enormous key as to what happens tomorrow.

Usually the last couple of months Carlisle have been slow starters needing normally subs or kick up backside second half to get going.

Last weekend with us being a goal down it changed, mentality was go for it and seemed to work well because it didn’t give Bradford time and space to play possession and this get themselves going and helped us a lot.

I suspect being a big play off game at Wembley the approach may be more along the lines of tight and try and make an opening than risk it but think this may give Stockport the impetus to keep possession and play and start to frustrate us.

Am hoping since we had first real win in ages vs a top side Simpson decides go same approach very offensive from first minute.

And I know this sounds wrong but if they have a couple of returning players from injury someone give em a good clipping in the first 5-10 minutes to make them a little wary

The pressure on Carlisle United is huge. Frighteningly big in fact

You get the impression this could be their one chance with their current squad. It's do or die. They will be very nervous on that long trip down from Cumbria.

It's a party atmosphere for us. Never been so relaxed going into any game.

Because they're wee fucks, even the majority of those though didn't cause any trouble.

Nice try

We're actually cool. We know on paper we aren't supposed to have a chance and have had a far better season than expected but Simmo has a way of inspiring confidence. Things seem fairly relaxed in carlisle this weekend.

I would be relaxed if we were playing against us.
