We passed a landmark during Tuesday's match when our first sub, Jordan Gibbons, became the 500th player that Yeovil have used in competitive first team matches since we moved to Huish Park in 1990 - an average of 20 new players for each of the last 25 seasons.

Gibbons is now one of 59 players who have made just one appearance for the club during that time.

This seems a lot, how does it compare with other clubs? At this level most of us rely a lot on loanees so I imagine it's not that unusual an amount.

Don't know what the total number for us would be over a similar period, but in general those seasons we've been struggling have seen very high turnovers.

We used over 50 players in the season we were relegated from League One. In his 5 years as our manager, Abbott made 98 signings (I remember this only because just before he was sacked, the N&S decided to remark that Leon McSweeney was number 98). Think that figure included loanees, and that's almost exactly 20 per season.

Greg Abbott and Graham Kavanagh both seemed especially dependent on getting in streams of loanees, probably more than half of which proved to be a mistake. Kavanagh's turnover in the season we went down was maybe excusable as he was very limited in who he could bring in, and had no scouts, so there was a bit of trial-by-fire attitude as a number of loanees and non-contractors were just brought in and tested for the first time in an actual game. Nacho Novo anyone?

Then the last two summers have seen large turnovers as Kavanagh and Curle have respectively sought to build their own squads. Curle however appears to avoid loans more than his predecessors, which seems like a relief to me. Last season we didn't have a great number of loanees in, especially in the first half of the season, and we currently have no players in (or out) on loan.

Up until this season our player turnover for the last 5 years or so would be very high. A new manager every calendar year, two relegations, I reckon we'd be up there. Not as high as Yeovil, but I think in the main that is due to their loan policy. We were stuck with a few on three-year-deals in 2011/12/13

I imagine most clubs go through around 25-30 players per season, a high percentage of which at this level would be loans. Over the summer most clubs probably have a turnover of around 10 players, the most around 25 (I think Orient got shot of 15 and brought in 9 over the summer).

Contract lengths are interesting as well. I can't remember the last player we offered a new deal to that hasn't been longer than two years.

David Holdsworths tenure probably produced more than that alone with his revolving door policy:ffs::bg:

I think I read we're on 22 players used already. We used 40 last season. Money likes his players.

Until last season, we've actually been really steady on player number in recent years. Long gone were the days of Tommy Taylor running 35-man squads. We had an awful injury crisis three years ago, which will skew figures due to all the loans we needed (seven goalkeepers in one season ffs), but it had been generally very consistent in terms of continuity for a good 10 years under Ling and Slade.

Think I am correct in saying that Chris Wilder signed about 892 players in his five years with us.

Appleton has tried his best to match up. And he does have a couple of truly sensational tactics on this front - including signing players and then loaning them out for the rest of their contracts after a few weeks and no appearances. But it's a policy that Wilder really committed to over the long term, so Appleton has a lot of ground to make up.

I would be shocked if we had not beaten the 500 since 1990 mark mentioned at the start.

I am using this thread just to ask.................what has gone wrong at Yeovil???

its only 2 years ago I don't think you'd been relegated ever or for many many years, yet now you've slumped 2 relegations, maybe yet a 3rd.

Is it your club is finding it hard to adjust from something (relegation) its never had before?

You think you've averaged 20 new players a season?!

Clearly I do.

We used 42 players last year and had four others that have either made an appearance previously or were signed to be first team players. Of the 46, I count 25 new signings plus a handful of youth team debutants. Of the 25 new signings last year, 8 remain at the club today including Michael Collins, who has been told that he is free to find a new club.

You might make allowances for the fact that we had a new manager last year, but Wikipedia says that we had 24 managers in the period covered, 16 of which were on a full time basis. This also doesn't make any adjustment for Chris Wilder, who like I said had an absolutely staggering rate of player turnover.

Jesus wept. That's insane. No wonder you've been in the doldrums for the past couple of decades.

Yes, as many relegations in the last 2 years as the previous 118 years put together.

We've always lived on the edge financially, always frugal due to very small income. I think the Championship season in hindsight provided us with more problems than anticipated. We lost all our decent players and never recovered.

It's surely the worst period in our history, but I think the number of players and managers that we have gone through is a symptom of our problems, rather than the cause. Most of them weren't very good.

It's encouraging to see a much more settled team in place at the start of this season.

It always is. Last season we didn't name the same team in consecutive league games until March. Fucking March. This season we've named the same side in every single league game so far. Makes all the difference (well, that and having the best two players in the division).

Holdsworth was something to behold. He'd begun unfancying a signing or three before the ink ran dry.

I kid you not folks, in his near 2 years he used around 70-80 players, and that's why he no longer gets nudged with a tree branch by clubs needing an egotistical moron.

In fact, I'd imagine that there's still the odd signing of his bedded in and hidden out in the Field Mill corridors somewhere, believing that the war hasn't yet ended and we're still losing casualties in the bloody horror of the Conference.

Always was very short sighted getting rid of your youth academy.
