Trying to think of some players who revived their careers? That is to say players who were playing at the top or at a good level, only to drop off but then get back to the top or a good level once more.

Recent example would be Ben-Arfa at Nice who has rescued his career when it looked doomed and will probably be at a top club next season. Others I can think of would be Adebayor in his first season at Spurs, Forlan after leaving Man Utd and Jean-Pierre Papin at Bordeaux.

Anyone think of any others/better ones?

Daniel Sturridge maybe? Great youth prospect at City, then wasted away in the Chelsea reserves as many players do, had a nice loan spell at Bolton before showing his class at Liverpool after escaping Chelsea. Gervinho had a career revival at Roma after being pish for Arsenal.

Both good shouts. Cambiasso at Inter after his time at Real is another one I've got.

I'm biased, but meh, Matty Etherington. Was on the verge of an England recall after a couple of seasons at Stoke, played the best football of his career.

When we signed him, there was supposedly a "price on his head" in London (not sure how much of that is myth) and Peter Coates had to pay off a large amount of gambling debts.

I'd go with that. West Ham's Player of the Year in 2004, fell of a cliff a bit in 2007-09 and then Stoke's Player of the Year in 2010.

Yeah a fair shout on Etherington. Was great for us in the Championship, but bar the occasional game in the Prem (and very occasional after 2006) he looked like he'd found his level. But then sprung back up to his best Prem form with Stoke.

Not sure about Sturridge though, in that he didn't really get near to his Liverpool peak at Chelsea or Man City.

That's probably true of Sturridge. He was a good prospect at Man City but only really showed good form at Bolton prior to joining Liverpool.

Javier Hernandez is another one, he scored 4 goals in his last full season at Man Utd and has 26 in all comps for Leverkusen this season.

Forlan became one of the best forwards in the world, and among the most impressive players at two separate WC Finals, after becoming something of a running joke at Man United. (EDIT: SHOULD READ POSTS PROPERLY)

After Man City sold him to Div 4 Notts County, Kaspar Schmeichel rose through the league pyramid to win the Premier League title this season with Leicester City.

Grant Holt, Rickie Lambert, Glenn Murray and Jonathan Walters were all variously deemed not good enough by lower-league clubs at certain points in their professional career.

I think those players are all more late bloomers than players who revived their careers. They just had great rises up the league or found their best form late in their careers, whereas the likes of Ben-Arfa and people who revived their careers were great, then shit, and then great again.

Anelka at Bolton. He reestablished his career there and got a move back to the top of the game.

Danny Simpson. Started at the top at Man utd, deemed to be not good enough, went Newcastle, they got rid to QPR, deemed not good enough again in the championship. We got him and frankly we didnt think he was good enough. Plenty of fans would have been quite happy for him to have gone a year ago and there was speculation he would go. There were plenty of raised eyebrows when he cntinued in the side after De Laet recovered from injury but for the most part he has been solid. He's made 3 mistakes this season and only one cost us. Prior to this season he was good for at least one fuck up a game. Arguably our most improved player i think.

Ian Harte.

From Premierleague / Champions League semi finalist fullback at Leeds, to Spanish second division with Levante, released by League One Blackpool before reviving his career with an 18 goal season in League One at Carlisle, Championship winner with Reading and then back in the Prem.

Anyone but Barça
Claudio Pizarro, with his Chelsea blip.

Darren Fletcher, with his illness.

Cassano completely lost his way in Spain before returning to Italy.

Adrian Mutu with his drug ban and sacking.

Gianfranco Zola for Chelsea in 02/03, and Teddy Sheringham for United in 00/01 but had their best seasons for their clubs after being written off at that level the year before.

To a extent I'd say Evra. Obviously will always be fondly remembered by United fans but towards the end he turned into a bit of a defensive liability (although he was pretty good in Fergie's last season). Moving to Juve seemed to give him a new lease of life, certainly didn't expect him to play in another CL final or make France's euro squad at the age of 35.

Jermaine Defoe. Thought when he disappeared off to Canada to play for Toronto that we wouldn't see him again.

Now back in the Premier League banging them in for Sunderland and was perhaps unfortunate to not get a place in the England squad.

Good shout, the times I've seen Juve since his move there he's been very good.

Also, Torres? I know he's not anywhere near his peak, but he did start a champions league final and is doing well enough for Atletico.

Huth and Kagawa recently?

Cantona seems like an obvious one to me. So many spats and fights with club teammates and national teammates and officials. Vilified, carted about on loan deals and made into an outcast by many in his own country, before coming here and being pivotal in numerous title winning sides at two different clubs.

I'm just hoping Rafa will play a part and playing first team football. If he gives it 6 month to January and depending where we are, see from there. Still a bigger draw if we're doing well than a struggling Prem team looking at relegation

Ricardo Quaresma?

Incredibly highly rated youngster but who failed at Barca, went to Porto & re-established himself, then again saw his career drop away with spells at Inter & Chelsea which led to Turkey & then the UAE and saw him out of contention for the international side, but who's now forced himself back into starting in his national side at 32.
