So after watching one of the most negative and boring games I can remember for years at Goodison Park today and recently listening to a local radio debate it really got me thinking. I am sure its been debated before but what are peoples thoughts on 1 point for every goal scored on top of the usual 3 points win, 1 point draw and 0 points lose?

I would like this to be applied at every level of the game but particularly the premier league. This would put a totally different spin on the 'try to win' philosophy rather than the 'try not to lose' philosophy. I am struggling to see a downside to this new points scoring system to any team across the league. There is incentive in any game scenario!!

I don't like the idea but if anything along these lines were to be implemented there'd have to a be cap on the number of bonus points or something. In a situation where goals equals points high scoring draws would be as valuable as a low scoring win - doesn't make sense.

Horrible, horrible idea. The game of football is as much about the art of defending, as it is about goal scoring. You would quickly get bored of shoot outs if they were they norm. The game would favour an average gung-ho side over a good conservative side over the course of a season.

There are multiple ways teams can succeed at the moment and that's a good thing.

Did either of you enjoy the tedious display at everton today or the countless similar games across the season??!! I agree that defending is an underated artform but something needs to be done to improve entertainment for the paying public.

Can we deduct a point per booking to encourage fair play?

Seems the next logical step to me.

Terrible idea. This will actually have the opposite impact. Where is the excitement of scoring a last min 1-0 winner? Where is the excitement for fans whose team plays with the intention of getting a point (like a certain team today) ? ...And we already have the simple goal difference rule...remember the excitement it added to the title race couple of seasons ag(uer)ooo??

Games would be won and lost within the opening twenty minutes. It would have the complete opposite effect and make every game boring.

Half the brilliance of football is the low scoring nature of the game. A goal means so much because it is rare. Is basketball 100x more exciting than football because of the point scoring every 15 seconds? It isn't. Goals =/= excitement.

Don't like the idea. Football is wonderful beacuse the game changes over the years and there are numerous ways to be successful. Whetehr that's run and gun style football which Keegan prefers or the deep thinking tactical game of the great German national sides of my youth and the Italian league when it was actually good. Then there's the incredibly dull Tika-Taka football that finally seems to be falling out from grace or theres the rough and tumble mix it up style or even the Give it to Gerrard/Suarez and let them run and dive for a free kick / penalty which typified Liverpool of recent years :fish:

I might not agree with all of the styles or enjoy watching them but i have seen some tremendous 0-0 games over the years. There's an Art to defending and there will always be some boring games but other than knowing there will always be at least one terrible decision by some of the apauling refs we have when ever they ref then games are far more unpredictable.

No chance. Football is as much about keeping them out at one end as it is about scoring them. Remember years ago when the lower leagues used to split teams on goals scored instead of goal difference, and that was wrong too, because it was rewarding teams who were good at one end, without rewarding them for being good at the other end. I think the last year they had goals scored, Bury were relegated from the Championship on goals scored, when had goal difference been the decider that season, they'd have stayed up comfortably, because they were solid at the back and lost a lot of games 1-0, whereas the side above them were losing 3-2 and 4-1.

The way things are, and goal difference are definitely the fairest way of doing things.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.

And last season. How much of Liverpool's capitulation against Palace was down to all the talk of them needing to stick six past them and them being more attackng than they needed to be late on.

Awful idea. Similar to what SUTSS said, the sport would just turn into something like basketball. A basket (or goal in this case) every 20-30 seconds would just spoil the entertainment of them.

Yeah, there's a couple of poor games that result in 0-0 or 1-0, but you'll also get the high scoring thrillers. Those amazing games would become as dull as a bore draw if goals were scored left, right and centre.
