Finally, our first decent game.

We've got a battle of 2 heavyweights early on here and at a decent viewing time as well, which is good. We have the winners of the last 2 Euros going head to head.

Portugal look as talented as ever with the emergence of players like Bernardo and Andre Silva. But it is in their core that their hopes surely rest. Ronaldo enters what could well be his last world cup, as does Pepe, Jose Fonte, Bruno Alves and Ricardo Quaresma. This is their last hurrah, but will they actually perform? They always seem to play poorly yet eek out wins. I mean, they won 1 game inside 90 minutes on their route to the Euro 2016 final. They also got battered by a poor Dutch side in a friendly back in March, so have their issues gone away?

A lot of people are tipping Spain to win this competition, but I don't see it. Their squad looks mostly the same from their last 2 tournaments, where they got dumped out at the group stages and last 16 respectively. Will they again operate with no out and out striker, deploying the false 9? Their midfield looks stacked and their defence should be solid, but I want to see some compelling evidence before jumping on them to win the whole thing.

Both of these 2 should breeze through to the quarters, but a defeat for either puts a lot of pressure on games 2 and 3. Should be a good game either way.

All match chat in here.

I do love the delicious irony of Sergio Ramos complaining Ronaldo went down softly for a penalty. Karma's a bitch isn't it Sergio?

Route one football from the Spaniards.

Brilliantly done by Costa, though.

If you ever need to sum up Costa you can show that goal. And what a fucking strike that was, thought it was in. Portugal need to get it together quick, they started well.

Ronaldo got lucky there, but you've got to say he has been sensational here. Been everywhere, some brilliant touches/lay-offs and terrifying pace. This is what you want to see at World Cups. World Class players turning up.

What a first half, Portugal are going to sit very deep second half, going to be tough for Spain to break them down. Ronaldo has been phonomenal.

Please don’t fizzle out again now. I have a feeling we might see the first red of the tournament in this game.

That's just tough luck for Portugal. Deflected out to him then a one in a hundred hit.

That makes up for all of the terrible free-kicks that he’s taken for Portugal over the years!

What a player. Thought De Gea was too far over on the other post, but I think he still would have struggled to save it.

Saudi Arabia would have had both teams simultaneously with no problems though...

Aye will be down to goaldifference to finish top of the group to avoid the Saudis until the final.
