Finally, our first decent game.
We've got a battle of 2 heavyweights early on here and at a decent viewing time as well, which is good. We have the winners of the last 2 Euros going head to head.
Portugal look as talented as ever with the emergence of players like Bernardo and Andre Silva. But it is in their core that their hopes surely rest. Ronaldo enters what could well be his last world cup, as does Pepe, Jose Fonte, Bruno Alves and Ricardo Quaresma. This is their last hurrah, but will they actually perform? They always seem to play poorly yet eek out wins. I mean, they won 1 game inside 90 minutes on their route to the Euro 2016 final. They also got battered by a poor Dutch side in a friendly back in March, so have their issues gone away?
A lot of people are tipping Spain to win this competition, but I don't see it. Their squad looks mostly the same from their last 2 tournaments, where they got dumped out at the group stages and last 16 respectively. Will they again operate with no out and out striker, deploying the false 9? Their midfield looks stacked and their defence should be solid, but I want to see some compelling evidence before jumping on them to win the whole thing.
Both of these 2 should breeze through to the quarters, but a defeat for either puts a lot of pressure on games 2 and 3. Should be a good game either way.
