Youpies, I know it's a friendly with trialists, but I remember a couple of seasons back watching us play Arnold, Carlton and Hucknall Rolls thinking the same thoughts as yesterday.
We only won those games because we played two full teams and were fitter, we had no class and were garbage.
We went down that year, and unless we strengthen we will be bottom six with what we have this year.
I've watched us play "meaningless friendlies" for years, and they aren't really that meaningless. Class players stand out, patterns and formations become clear, you just get to know when things will be good, Munto, Martin Allen and poor, Derry, Steve Thompson.

Lost 3-2 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Didn't go, so not sure how well we played....

We played okay but our defending was very weak. Each goal that Wednesday scored I thought there were opportunities to clear it. We need to be switched on and more aggressive at the back. Suppose it will take time to get that match fitness back.

I watched Wednesday last season and the season before a few times on the tele in the league and the play-offs. Their lack of pace and flair in the wide areas was very noticeable then and yesterday. It's taken them way too long to address that. I think it's the difference between them being in the play-offs and automatically promoted.

Highlights of the game below.

I see Chesterfield were beaten by Boro's reserves 2-0. Good, I was really getting worried they were going to run away with the league this year.

Defending is always the biggest challenge when you're putting together a virtually brand new side. It'll come in time. It took Plymouth a short while to sort themselves out last season.

Yes, but Stringy is forgetting the fact that both Mansfield goals could also have been easily avoided by Wednesday's back line. Esp. the first one ;)

Similar amount of Mansfield fans behind the goal as when we played there last season.

Also what's with the 'let's go to war' banner ffs!? :ffs:

Yes the whole game was poor defensively. We could have had another one from a Wednesday mistake but I think Spencer hit a tame shot at the keeper.

It would have been nice to get a draw and get into the early habit of picking up results but hey-ho!

Almost certain that it was a pretty much full strength side but yeah ok

Whoever is telling you we are going to run away with anything this season is misleading you to the highest degree. I hope you aren't that easily influenced that you've had a wedge on us. If we make the play offs I'll be suprised. But we are in a better place than 4 weeks ago

Finished 3-0. Mo Eisa getting his 5th goal of pre-season and Danny Wright with a brace, including a fantastically sweet volley.

We were meant to play St Albans tonight, but the game has been cancelled as a 70-year old employee apparently fell from a roof at the ground and has been seriously injured

Hitchin have stepped in and agreed to host our first team tonight instead, although obviously the football will be overshadowed. Thoughts with the man and his family, hope he is okay.

It is with great sadness that the club announce the loss of Clive Churchhouse , one of the St Albans City’s longest serving supporters and volunteers who died in an accident at the ground earlier this morning.

Chairman Lawrence Levy said on behalf of the club “We are all completely devastated by the news. Clive was a much loved character around the club with a big personality who regularly helped out at the ground and on away trips with the team. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Valerie, daughter Sallyann, son Keith and his grandchildren as well as his wide circle of friends at this very sad time.”

Tonight’s pre-season fixture with Luton Town has been cancelled as a mark of respect to Clive and his family.

Derby at home tonight and the Rams are streaming it live on the website hence a fair few Valiants are now registered.

Off to Spain then so no friendly for ten days as it stands unless we arrange a last minute one over there.
