We had Issam Ben Khemis from Lorient, Reise Allassani from Palace and Charlie Jemson from Forest on trial with our U23 squad in mind.

Shrewsbury 2-1 Aston Villa
John Terry played about 50 minutes.
We look a lot more solid on first impressions than last season, and went ahead with 2 second half goals with a Villa consolation from the penalty spot in the 93rd minute.

Beat Hull City 2-1. They didn't seem to realise that it was hot in Portugal, looked knackered midway through each half and we were able to play keep ball pretty handily. That said, we were far from our strongest team at all times and rode our luck with a few near misses.

Won 1-0 at AFC Fylde's new gaff, Stephen Davies with the goal.

What's with loads of teams going to Portugal for a weeks pre season training?

This is the third year we have done a European tour and it's a real crowd pleaser. As something of a trend setting club, it's natural that others follow.

For a serious answer, it seems like we turned to a company specialising in trips to the Algarve and I imagine most others did too. They must have offeded a good deal. I've enjoyed our games against local teams much more than I did the ones against Boro/Hull so I hope we go back to that next year.

We followed up our first win over in Ireland with two defeats.

We played two friendlies yesterday beating Welling United 3-0 and Greenwich Borough 4-0. Marshall and Clarke both bagging their first goals.

We beat some 7th tier German side yesterday, the highlight though are all the videos from last night doing the rounds of the staff/players out having a sesh with the fans that went over

Shrewsbury did this trip to the Algrave this season which is why I noticed quite a few clubs were doing the same. Could be that we see a pre season tournament on the Algarve in the future?

Should be interesting if you don't have a great start to the season.

Ain't it like a month to the first game? How long do your hangovers last?

I don't have an issue with any of them letting their hair down with a boozy team bonding night out.

Wouldn't particularly have a problem if it was our players but seems an odd time to do it, when you're in the middle of pre-season trying to condition and build fitness.

They've had two months to go and get on the lash together.

They had an intensive training camp, training two times a day all week in Austria, not really like they've been chilling.

The players all got smashed at the player of the season awards and then won the last couple of games and got to Wembley, no one really batted an eyelid then. If we are shite at the start of the season it will be because we're shite, not because of this.

Speaks to a lot of trust in the camp. Whether it's naively misguided, we'll see.

I get the feeling we've got a close knit dressing room at the moment, everyone accepting their new contracts, Rob Hunt posing a big party in orchestrating the deal for him to leave Brighton to come to Oldham (I mean good on ya kid, but seriously?!)

An underrated aspect of success is the dressing room atmos I find.

Players seem a lot happier under McCall than Parky. Quite a few instances of player disgruntlement under Parkinson, seems more laid back nowadays. Be difficult to quantify which approach is more successful really.

Parky seems like a boring bastard so I'm not surprised by that.

Agreed but pretty much every aspect of success is underrated because a bunch of virgins think they'll get a place on Guardian Football Weekly by pretending they watch every game of football ever played and talking about false nines.
