Just watched us get battered 2-1 at Rochdale. A scoreline that totally flattered us. Dreadful in every sense. It doesn’t matter what strikers we have if we have no supply for them whatsoever.

On that showing Simpson will he gone by September.

Less part time teams, bigger crowds, etc. doesn't always translate to on the pitch quality though.

It doesn't always but it logically lsure does help improve the quality on the pitch from top to bottom aka the league. Why wouldn't it?

Last Season Chesterfield ran away with probably due to who went up the previous two season. But prior to Chesterfield's expected but impressive it was close and competitive.

Money changes the game and improves the quality , it's seen from NL to PL.

We are throwing away leads in preseason in an attempt to convince everyone we’re no different than last season, meanwhile under the cover of darkness we’re perfecting Maynardball 2.0 - you were warned

A largely and surprisingly second string Vale lost 2-0 at Burton. Meltdowns galore despite the fact probably 3 or 4 will start at Salford.

Expected us to start looking at Salford today with the lineup but we left 8 or 9 at home so we’ve either got a massive injury crisis or will be saving them for the Tuesday/Saturday home games.

Doesn’t sound like the players who we had last season did anything to suggest they should force their way into the side.

We were fucking shit.

No way will we be a top 7 team on that performance. I know he'll be judged when our league games start, but our midfield bar Butterworth is really poor and our wing backs aren't anything good neither.

Same old shite tactics and formation.

Just seems like the same mistakes are being made as last season, but with different players. No pace, no creativity, no options to switch tactics. You nullify our wing backs you nullify us, and as you say they don’t really look good.

It’s like no lessons have been learned. Given the budget we have it’s really disappointing.

And that is the scary reality .
Our squad is pretty shit when you take out our ‘best 11’ .
Injuries will bite.
Shite will be playing.

Beat Chelmsford City 1-0. Matt Dennis continuing his scoring streak as the menace he is. Played 3, won 2, lost 1 so far for us vs Hannover U23’s, Chelmsford City and Barnet respectively. Portsmouth and Plymouth to come.
Beat Wealdstone 3-1. Wearne, Tomlinson and Dennis the menace (again).

Played 4, won 3, lost 1. Portsmouth and Plymouth to go.

250 people with too much time on their hands, driving 45 minutes down the road to watch a glorified training session with virtually a second string team.

You can tell by the manager's interview, in which he discussed nothing about the actual game, as to how much credence is put on the result. It's literally just getting minutes into some legs. If he shoves players in who are slightly behind fitness wise and they get injured, then it's just stupid to risk in a friendly.

These players are working together on shape and tactics, day in and day out.

That applies to all other friendlies. I went to watch my last one about 10 years ago and it was played at virtual walking pace, with zero effort. I think we went on to get promoted.

Genuinely, if Salford played Northwich Victoria next week and got beat 3-0, it would have zero bearing on how they were against us. You need a competitive element, where there's actually a consequence, otherwise it's walking football.

I don’t necessarily think so as you’d not have that XI bar in the pizza cup, also worth noting by DM interview he overloaded them before the game to make it tougher again.

Another good work out and minutes into the legs but expect us to start going into the final friendlies in match mode to start focusing on the campaign ahead rather than the over load to boost fitness longer term.

Southend 1-3 Gills, Nolan, Clarke and Wyllie with the goals. Loads of first teamers unavailable but still having a decent pre-season. Two more to go, Southampton U21s behind closed doors this week then a trip to Woking next weekend. Get through those without too much more damage to numbers in the squad and it's been an ok build up. Expect a new body in the door this week as well.

3-3 draw at AFC Fylde. Game started badly with new signing Declan Drysdale going off injured in the opening minute. Had to use Education Hub player Jack Bentley (Jim's son) as makeshift central defender and he struggled. 2-0 down at h/t became 3-0 just after the break. However, Adkins made subs and switched to 3 at the back, with an excellent performance from Cameron Norman at RWB, scoring one himself and being instrumental in the turnaround, a fitter Kristian Dennis getting the other two.

Omari Patrick on trial was a bit of a mixed bag, but didn't seem at past heights. Of our 22 man squad 5 are currently missing through injury already.

I got to that one today it was shocking, the only positives were a: it’s pre season and therefore means nothing and b: there is two weeks to sort it out.

The whole set up looked bloody ridiculous, the wing backs ‘never’ hardly move the entire game, neither pushing forward to wing or moving back to defence, therefore our 3 centre backs get ridiculously spaced out in a way I’ve never seen, one seems to go walkabout then the other two pull away fro. Each other as far away as possible leaving enormous gaping gaps for anyone to run through.

No midfielder drops back to cover, that isn’t a surprise it seems to be the single most invisible midfield I’ve seen, I can understand we don’t have very attack based midfielders, but they never moved all game or attempted to get the ball or make any runs or cover gaps or double up on anyone…..waste of time being there.

The wing backs stay static hoping everyone else does their job and some mythical large gap on the wing may magically appear for them to bother to attempt a cross without needing to run or beat someone, the forwards…..well I just felt sorry for them dealing with the rest they have no chance.

With an atrocious midfield and terrible wing backs they need to ditch that 4-3-2 it doesn’t suit them and defence is all over place with it and just go for now with 4-3-3 at least with Wyke, Kelly, Armstrong they may muster something without need of others

It would appear the bookies are looking at our odds for relegation and shortening them, just because we are not playing well in our friendlies and Artell ball isn't working. "We have scored in every game so far though and we haven't being practising defensive work like positioning at corners, etc, etc"(slight miss-quote from Artell in his post match interview).

We were brayed 4 nil by Lincoln. There were no positives, the whole performance was horrible. Just when I was starting to feel we might be ok for another season - sigh

Chesterfields first team losing to Long Eaton tonight just proves for certain that the National League was way stronger back in the day when Mansfield won it.
Tell me you’ve posted something without research without telling me you’ve posted something without doing any research

Average age was about 17, my mates little brother played who is 16. Our first team played the night before or same night against Derby

Still maintain this is proper Reform UK ‘things were better in my day’ stuff. Mansfield’s last season in the NL, eight teams averaged three figures and twelve were part time, against one and three last season.

As with every league, it’s objectively way stronger now than it was ten-fifteen years ago, for a variety of reasons. Conference is probably the most pronounced with that tbh.

Crowds are the easiest way of explaining it. Bromley averaged nearly 800 more last season than Mansfield did the year they went up. Part time, relegated Dorking got the same crowds last season as bloody Lincoln did that year. Woking, as an example of a team in both, have added more than 1,000 fans over that time. Imagine what that’s doing to budgets down there.
It is proper “Reform” which given it involves Mansfield probably isn’t far off. All we need now is Adam to be outed as Lee Anderson and we’re cooking on gas

He said something about the fans abusing him in the post match interview after he (the players made him) re-thought Artell ball last time out . He seems to have gone from quirky to on the back foot and we have been there before , this sort of scenario rarely ends well - maybe recruitment being an 'art form ' means not having any players because as it stands we are well short .I have gone from 'waiting to see how it plays out ' to genuinely worried .

We were battered 3-0 by Bristol City on Friday night - by all accounts it should have been more.

Table will be delayed this week. The spreadsheet is on my work computer and I'm out of the office until Wednesday.

I too am an optimistic guy, but it doesn't sound good at all according to those that went to York or South Shields, shambolic and clueless being the kindest comments I've read!

Unless we play any games behind closed doors we’ve one left. Richard Wood’s testimonial away at Rotherham. Now I’m all in favour of him having one, when he’s retiring but there’s sod all friendly about that fixture

If i was Fleetwood I would be looking at us and saying 'get stuck in '

I went to the York game and think Mcrechran is a decent player tbf same with Ainley but these guys are technical players and could easily be bullied by any meat head type league 2 player, same goes for the Icelandic lad looks good as a technician but not likely to enjoy some typical league 2 i would suggest .

Suppose time will tell and maybe Daves idea of 'art form' will blow away league 2 with total football

Do people never learn when it comes to friendlies?

It means Jack.

On the whole yes and results mean nothing.

But when your 2 weeks off the season and the starting 11 and more so squad don’t look comfortable or look able to play the system manager wants and manager isn’t looking at other approaches…..that is then worrying.

That Carlisle squad does not at all suit 5-3-2 but we are playing it regardless in two weeks
