After last night's 1-0 home defeat to QPR. Didn't help himself with the whole Fulham job thing with the fans or board surely? Is this a bit harsh though? It's still early in the season and they aren't in a desperate position. What has gone so wrong?

Who next for the job?

If I was a Reading fan I would have wanted him gone as soon as he whored himself to Fulham.

Could never have envisaged this two months ago with how they started, and Fulham on and off the pitch seem to have screwed the bloke over. The 4-2 comeback has seen a change in fortunes ever since seemingly, and then the talking to them about the managerial position obviously caused some uncertainty.

Think Mowbray or Pearson will get the job, more likely Pearson, which would be a fantastic appointment.

Reading are still without doubt the best side I've seen this season.

Yeah this pretty much. It was eventually inevitable, although so soon is quite surprising.

What actually happened with the Fulham job? Did Clarke say he wanted it, only for Fulham to pull out of a deal?

Made a rod for his own back, you start talking to other clubs before crawling back you better make sure you get results.

He'll be at Fulham within the week probably.

Seems an odd one to me as an outsider. Their form hasn't been great but they're well in the play-off hunt. Not to mention Reading could have got compensation off Fulham.

He must have really annoyed the hierarchy at Reading with his flirtatious glances elsehwere

No surprise and i am glad he has being sacked. The performances the last couple of months have been crap and the results poor. Then you have him going to talk to Fulham and deciding what he had at Reading was better. He was warned by Nigel Howe (Chief Executive) after that that he had to improve the sides form.

He would play players out of position. Wouldn't drop players who were not performing. Got tactics wrong. Would always leave it too late to make a sub.

I expect that he would have got more time if he had not gone and spoke to Fulham. After that it was only a matter of time before he was sacked as the majority of fans wanted him out.

The favourite for the job is Nigel Pearson followed by Phil Parkinson.

Brendan Rodgers to make a return? (seems unlikely but if he wants to start afresh)

Highly unlikely with Nigel Howe (the CEO) still at the club. Rodgers shagged his missus, which was one of - if not the undisclosed - reason why he eventually got the sack.

Can't think of any other job in the world where speaking to another company about a potentially more lucrative job and turning down them down would earn the ire of your employer. There is no loyalty in football anymore and that applies to all parties. Football supporters and higher ups are probably the most disloyal on the whole, though.

My tuppence for what it's worth.

I had a lot of time for Steve Clarke - he gave me one of my greatest days as a Reading fan, seeing us give it a right good go in an FA Cup Semi-Final - but that has slowly worn off these past few weeks. I wasn't really frustrated that he held talks with Fulham, they are a bigger club than us, and he had every right too. However, the performances since then have been nothing short of woeful and hardly inspired confidence. He had to go, really.

Phil Parkinson for me. My favourite player from the Elm Park era, would love to see him given the chance to prove his worth. He'd absolutely jump at the opportunity as well.

Why so?

Also the difference between football and any other job is that it's in the public eye. It's probably a little humiliating for Reading. If I was to go and talk to other employers, it would be discreet and I'm sure my employer would be hugely disappointed and a little peeved if they were to find out that I was actively looking for another job particularly when the one I already have is pretty Cushty.

Surprised how quickly this has been done, but was inevitable as soon as he spoke to Fulham. The three games since that mess have been three of the worst games in years (and we've had some bad seasons recently). And the five before that had produced a lot of questions concerning his ability too.

His record under us was barely better than relegation. Take out our fantastic September this season and it's shocking. He has a worse record than the manager before him who was underachieving, all whilst being given more from the owners than any Reading manager has for some years.

Gives us a good 3-4 weeks to find and bring in a replacement, have them assess the squad before the January window. Only problem is now that given we've had to pay off Clarke, we'll be looking on the cheaper side of replacements.

I reckon it will be Nigel Pearson taking over. Seen a few Reading fans mentioning Justin Edinburgh who is doing a good job at Gillingham as well as Parkinson who has/is doing well at Bradford. He would certainly have the fans backing.

I don't think you quite understand how much of a footballing dinosaur he is.

Very much this. Shocked how poor they were in conparison watching last night, with basically the same team as well

Phil Parkinson is not a good manager. He's like a lower league Roy Hodgson.

Pearson and McDermott running away in the early bookies' odds. Hope BM doesn't come back, would ruin his reputation.

Daily Mirror seems to think we're after Bergkamp. Going to be a long couple of weeks..

I could be completely wrong but there is no way i can see Bergkamp taking the job. Also agree with people saying Parkinson is not a good manager. Don't want him given the job. Don't want and i can't see Brian McDermott coming back.
