I have doubts about the changes to the issuing of a red card as it will be up to the referees discretion as to whether the foul was accidental or deliberate, some top referees seem to struggle getting it right with the current rule, let alone give them further licence to cock it up.

Why not yellow card and a sin bin?

Cos sin bins would make the game shit I suppose.

Yeah but it will affect some pens and reds. The one in our game vs Bournemouth for example. Bournemouth appealed it as they didn't even think it was a foul. But it certainly wasn't deliberate anyway so he'd have stayed on.
But I don't think the game needs more rules open to interpretation. It needs less. Next season they'll be asking on MOTD why this one was deemed deliberate and that one wasn't and it'll just be a farce.

Macclesfield Town/Manchester City. It's complicated.
I can buy this. It's one of the things that annoys me in football that a goalkeeper can come out to claim the ball, get kicked in the head and then get sent off. If the only intention was to win the ball, then just because the attacker decides to belt the ball out of play near the corner flag and fall over, it shouldn't automatically be a red.

Trouble is how can you tell the difference between a keeper trying to take the ball and one trying to take out the striker. Presumably more will do it if they think they no longer get their marching orders.

That's also true. I'd like to see less 'interpretation' overall. Penalties are a fucking joke as it is. We've already got the 'contact' ratio, the 'made a meal of it' quotient and the 'trailing leg' variance. Add 'deliberate' to it, and it could just collapse. They can't even get 'deliberate' nailed down on handballs.

I'd say that they all try and take the ball to be honest! If the ref is encouraged to look for the forwards who don't care about going for goal and just boot the ball away, then good.

It's a good thing in practice. i'd rather watch a good game 11 v 11 than one ruined by a needless sending off. the problem is which ref you get now makes the game even more of a lottery. Mike dean.... Mike Centreofattention Dean for example
