This is a bit of a novelty for us, but whos in your 22? Any surprise omissions? Any room left?

We've registered 21. Bryce Hosannah, Callum McFazdene and Billy Waters (only signed at the end of last season) miss out.

Didn't know the rules had changed this year. A lot of teams currently right at the limit.

15: Colchester, Morecambe
16: Crewe
18: Accrington, MK Dons, Salford, Swindon, Tranmere
19: AFC Wimbledon, Gillingham, Grimsby, Notts County, Stockport
20: Crawley
21: Barrow, Bradford, Doncaster, Forest Green, Mansfield, Walsall, Wrexham
22: Harrogate, Newport, Sutton

Feel like a lot of teams are limiting themselves by not registering more young players. Newport and Sutton for example have 24 man squads. Few injuries hit and they are going to struggle to fill the bench. Morecambe have 20, although I know their small size is more for financial reasons.

I think you need to read this

Championship clubs can name a 25-man squad, but clubs in League One and Two are limited to a 22-man squad. It sounds restrictive, but that number does not include goalkeepers or players who were under the age of 21 at the start of the calendar year.

I understand the rules thanks. My point is, Newport and Sutton have 24 players registered and that includes U21s. If injuries hit either team, they won't be able to sign any free agents due to them being at the 22 Over 21 player limit, unless of course they sign a player aged 20 or younger.

Why wait to sign a free agent, who will be months out of practice and take weeks to get up to speed? It makes more sense to have a full squad to pick from who are all ready to step in when needed. Can’t understand the logic of leaving yourself short, just in case you get some injuries and need to bring in some rejects just to be able to fill a bench.

That £125k for Waters is looking better by the day.

I heard 650k.

On one hand I feel like he's not had a proper chance, but he just hadn't looked a good fit for how we play. The signing made sense at the time to provide some cover but not the length of the contract just looks a bizarre signing now.

He scored the shittest hat trick ever against Colchester, from a combined total of about 4 yards, which boosted his goalscoring numbers somewhat.

He missed a host of great chances as well. We've definitely improved in that department this season.

He was best for us behind the strikers or even out wide - seemed a weird choice to replace Mullin, but not sure any real scouting went into his signing other than asking L2 clubs if they had any strikers available (Simpson at Carlisle reckons he was asked if he could spare a forward but didn’t want to let anyone go).

He’s nowhere near as terrible as being made out, but neither is he up to being the main striker for a team in L2. He’s probably great for the banter in the new series though, so money well spent.

He got L2 player of the month purely because of that shitty hat-trick.

Can't really argue. Looking at Hossanah, he's made of glass and can't see a good player in him. Constantly out of position, cant use a left foot to save his life and too predictable.

McFadz isn't a surprise, nor Waters. Not to the levels we have got.

We’ve registered David Davis, who hasn’t been seen at the club in ages.

But there are diamonds among the free agents. Last year we picked up Dylan McGeouch in November, who was probably our best player of the season (not a very high bar mind you). And in late September 2017 we signed Isaiah Osbourne, who did more than most to keep us in the Football League that season.

Surely better to have them signed up and part of the squad rather than have to go looking for them when the squad is depleted?

he played for us against Newcastle U21s in the Papa Johns and put a lot of effort in chasing the ball etc but his confidence looks shot. And he absolutely skied a sitter from 6 yards out

Bostock was an excellent signing for us last season. I reckon in an ideal world you can pick up a player if the opportunity presents rather than leaving it just in case you need someone in a pinch

We also picked up George Mceachrean and Tom Brewitt as free agents. I'm guessing that the club holds more cards with these type of players wage wise as if they don't get a club they face being on the football scrap heap for ever? It seems that's a tactic we're trying to repeat this season given our fairly thin squad.

Definitely, but also could be worth leaving at least one spare spot in case a good opportunity presents itself

Often they won’t be available in the summer, though. John Bostock turned down a new deal at Donny last summer because he didn’t want to play in League Two, so there’s no chance we’d have got him then. Fast forward three months and the offers hadn’t arrived, we invited him to train with us because he lives locally and he enjoyed it enough to sign. Has been absolutely incredible for us, always worth leaving room for an opportunity signing like that.
