I've just started Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen. Gonna play through the entire series I think. Never finished Defiance or Soul Reaver 2.

After that I'm gonna play through Onimusha 1-3. Might give the fourth a go as I never played that back on the PS2.

I'm planning to go through the 1FF series again so I've been playing FF1 recently. It's obviously a little basic and dated now but I still love it.

Onimusha 4 is the best one, in my opinion. Give it a go Cas - you'll love it.

I've been playing through the original Alone in the Dark game. Incredibly dated but I'm going through it to see how it inspired the early survival horror titles on the Playstation.

downloaded a load of emulators on my phone. n64 one is great graphically, totally no difference from the console. cant play it though on screen withought it being terribly clunky as the trigger button is totally out of the way. NES one is probably the easiest to play as only 2 buttons

Retro to me is 8-bit 1980s computers or arcade games. Or the Amiga/ST at a push. Certainly not a PS2 or N64.

My most used emulator is VICE on my old PSP. Works a treat and the 7,000 games I have take up virtually nothing on the memory card. Also got a Megadrive, SNES, GBA, DS and Neo-Geo emulators on it too, some fantastic games for on the go for absolutely nothing. Then on my phone I have SCUMM.

At a push, i think we can include N64/ PS1 era. The Dreamcast to me (even though its nearly 20 years old) felt like a big shift, I tend to associate it more with the PS2/ Xbox than with the N64/ PS1.

yeah, well, the premier league hardly seems like football to a lot of people who can remember the game pre-BSKYB, but it's still legitimately football.

3D cameras and analogue controls didn't even become a mainstay until the mid-latter portion of the xbox/gc/ps2 generation, so i think there is a case to be made for some sort of retro aesthetic for the n64 at the very, very least.

The analogy is a little out of left field, but it's thematically appropriate and the sentiment is the same. It's an aesthetic that affixes itself in the mind of an individual from a certain generation. We're both ostensibly talking about football, but to talk about football is not only to talk about the rules of the game, the players on the pitch or the style of play; it's also to talk about all of its social, cultural and political elements/associations. Similarly, 'retro' signifies something broad, nebulous, whatever, and doesn't represent a single, well-worn trope, e.g. pixel art sidescroller.

Wait, what argument am I not following through with here? To make that accusation I presume you have something specific in mind. Would you prefer my view be that retro has a concrete definition and refers to a specific era? And that I should argue a case for that?

We have a similar "thought" about this. You are in your mid-40s and I am in my early 50's. So, not that far apart especially when it comes to retro-games.
My CV in gaming began with the ZX-81, Sinclair Spectrum, Atari Console, C-64 then in the Mid-80's the first PC's (8088, XT, AT, then Pentium). And I own all the Playstation Consoles (except the PS4, I am still in denial )

Tbh: I don't play games from the 80's or early 90's anymore. Back then I had a lot of fun playing them but now I am too "spoiled" by the uptodate graphics in the games that I have difficulties to play 8bit pixel games

Not exactly retro/classic, but I've recently started a new game of Pokemon Emerald. Not played it since it came out on GBA, and unfortunately there's no one to wireless trade zigzagoons for starter Pokémon with.

Got 1 badge so far with Torchic and Shroomish being my best Pokémon so far

anyone tried or have the rasberry pi emulaton station? noticed a few people have started selling preloaded bundles recently and really tempted to buy one (dont have time or patience to actually make one and download all the ROMS)

seem to be able to pick them up for about £85? although one company is converting old consoles for a bit of a heftier price tag

I see they released a few PS2 games on the store. Max Payne is on it, but I won't get it despite loving the series as a whole. If they release Max Payne 2 I'll deffo get that though.
