Rooney is quite unloved, but then I get the feeling the England national team has been pretty unloved since the early 2000s. Either something to do with resentment at the 'Golden Generation' failing to do anything despite promising much, or political correctness going mad meaning you can't even support England without being thrown into prison for being racist.

Also the amount of self-worth the players have after achieving very little. Then there are the fans that gave up on the National Team because their club had a taste of success.

The numbers don't really tell the real story though, for all of England's problems we do always create a lot of chances, and Rooney misses a helluva lot of them. Other strikes haven't really had the chance to show their worth while he was the top man, but when they have, they've generally had very good goalscoring records too. Defoe has 19 in 55 despite being mostly sub appearances, Crouch has 22 in 42, Kane already has 2 in 3 etc. I don't know if you've watched England recently, but in this campaign especially he usually misses at least three great chances before finding the net. He hasn't been "outstanding" by any stretch.

I'm all for discussing Rooney's current decline, but this is another example of the negativity of England fans. A player breaking an all time record is a discussion of how shit the player has been for England.

Easier to score international goals now.

Robbie Keane has 67 international goals, at a better strike rate than Rooney. Doubt many would argue that Keane or his Ireland team are better than Rooney and his England team. Better player, playing with better players, yet can't score as many.

If Keane can manage 67 goals in this timeframe, than Rooney should be looking at far more than that if he gets to the 140 caps Keane has.

Tbh the fact that Rooney is at loggerheads with Charlton just proves that England haven't had a regular scorer throughout its long history. Germany's leading goalscorer is Klose with 71 while David Villa has 59 for Spain. Rooney is just setting a precedent really.

He's also played about twenty more times.

Not too sure why you are using German players in a discussion as to whether or not Wayne Rooney will be an England great?

to show how easy it is today to score 40+ international goals.

for me a 'great' is someone who helped to achive something. outside of the EPL he was/is pretty average

Again, pretty average players don't score 50 goals for their country.

Regarding Robbie Keane, hasn't he scored quite a lot of penalties fr Ireland?

But Rooney hasn't always played as the main striker, and he's scored goals when he has. As that article says, he's scored 13 in 23 in the last two seasons, which is a better record than any of those.

I don't think the teams he's scored against is a reason to criticise his record either, there's a good spread of quality and it's a hardly a surprise that he's scored 5 goals against San Marino and only 1 against Argentina.

Agree, there is no difference between Rooney scoring 5 vs San Marino and Charlton scoring 5 vs Luxemburg. Charlton and Rooney are both easily within the top 5 goalscorers in England history (with Lineker, Greaves and Owen in my opinion).

nothing against Luxemburg please, at least they have a win vs Germany and the Netherlands in their records, also a quarter-final apperance at the Euros 1964 and they went out unlucky after two draws vs Denmark

So now he's broke the record, can we fuck him off in favour of Kane and if he's ever fit again, Sturridge?

Except it's their results against England that are actually relevant here. England have beaten Luxembourg 9-0 twice (one of which Charlton played in), a bigger margin than they've ever managed against San Marino.

we have scored seven vs Brazil and only 4 vs Gibraltar, that doesnt make the goals vs Gribaltar more valuable

Forget Rooney, Neymar has scored 46 in 67 games for Brazil and he's only bloody 23. Better than Pele and Ronaldo that fella.

He scored again last night also. If anything he steps it up more playing for Brazil than Barca.

Rooney's record stands up very well when compared to the two greatest players of his generation.

Cristiano - 122/55
Rooney - 107/50
Messi - 105/49

Spain only have 2 players who've scored over 40 goals. Fernando Hierro's their 4th highest ever goalscorer with 29. England have 10 with 29 or more and 5 with 40+. I'm not too sure they're a good comparison.

Italy's record goalscorer has 35, they only have 3 with 29/30 or more, and 2 of them were at least partly pre-WWII. England only have 1 pre-WWII with 29+

Yes because the Italians are ruthlessly efficient and don't fuck about playing strikers who don't score for years on end.

Having the quick look to be certain of those I noticed David Platt has an impressive record from midfield, not too far off Rooney goals per game either. The clear highest gpg records were all for pre-1960 players too, guess it's got harder as the years have gone on...

Rooney is a nightmare for polish fans. I remeber his goals against Poland and it reminds me of Paul Scholes. I think that Rooney will be a legend of english football like Scholes or Beckham. This moment of season is very hard for him, but he is a tough guy and will manage pretty well

With Rooney I think he's one of them players that have to be 100% fit to look anything like world-class. At times he can look very average, others he could play for any side or country in the world. I do think he peaked early though and we saw the best of him in the 11/12 season where he was absolutely outstanding. He's done himself no favors with some of the antics he's got up to throughout his career and that's why a lot of England supporters simply don't take to him, despite him now being our all time leading scorer.

250 goals in 562 appearances for club. 50 goals in 107 appearances for country. That's despite him playing a lot of games in various positions to that of an out and out striker. They're impressive stats whether you like the guy or not.

It's probably only England to be fair where we wouldn't celebrate a player breaking the all time goal scoring record. He is 4th in the all time Premier League top scorers also, a much better player than Kane and Sturridge. Although I would prefer to see Rooney and Kane up top together.

*Used to be better. Certainly not much better than Sturridge.
