I'm surprised there isn't a thread on this.

So what do we think of coughing up £369 million for the upkeep of Liz et al's gaff?

At least we know where the money (supposedly) saved by leaving the EU and (supposedly) to be ploughed into the NHS is really going.........

Exactly, the NHS will have to miss out on funding for a week...and a bit now.

The amount of money brought in by the Royals is disputable - would tourism be significantly affected if the country kept the buildings and the history but removed the Royal family? I doubt the return on investment is as simple as the Royals bring in £1.1 billion. I also don't think keeping Buckingham Palace maintained for a luxurious lifestyle should be subsidised by the taxpayer. Keeping it standing upright, maybe.

It's just difficult to hear that £369m is being spent on the refurbishment of a palace when there are increasing numbers of homeless on the streets of every major city.

No one said to knock the Palace down, just to get Queenie and the rest of the talentless freeloaders out of it.
Indeed with 700-odd rooms it could easily be turned into a posh hotel, and would generate more money than that lot do anyway.

I'm a big fan of the royal family purely because it's one of the few things that still makes this country feel British.

Privatise them imo.

Sell the franchise of running and operating a royal family to Branson, or Capita like they do with actual public services. They can fund the upkeep of palaces through tourism etc.

Thought the timing of the announcement was obscene, coming the day after it was revealed just 908 affordable home were built in London. It's high time the royals paid for there own upkeep, they can plenty afford it.

It's a bit of a red herring anyway, it's not as if the Tories would spend any of this on all the things people have bemoaned in this thread.

Many of the refurbishments appear to be required to avoid fire hazards which obviously endanger the building and guests.

I admit I am biased, I am a historian who is strongly in favour of keeping historical buildings running and in good shape.

It's not old and is architecturally/aesthetically undistinguished (to be charitable). If the case is being made on the grounds of heritage (scare quotes) then there are many, many better places to spend ~£400 milly.

They are too symptomatic of the class structure that holds the countries back.

I've heard quite a few royalists saying this is too much for them.

As am I, but we are talking about a family that is sitting on a combined fortune of nearly £60 billion, so really they need to fund it. Social housing is for me the biggest crisis this country faces, that money could have been better used there.

Fuck knows, I haven't counted. But if you send a freedom of information request to the London mayor I'm sure you'll find out, only costs £16.
