Anyone else keen on running? For some reason I signed up to the London Marathon this year, thought it would be one of those "Once in a lifetime" sort of things. Actually pretty excited, also nervous.

Just started last week. Two runs so far of about a mile , going to build up to four or five miles and that'll do me.

Best way to do it is to build up slowly, I did a 10 a little while back and went for a 12 mile run 2 days later, got to mile 6 and started getting a mid-foot pain. Too much too soon me thinks.

Did the Reading Half Marathon on Sunday. Finished in 1.56 which is a PB for a fat man like me.

Great event.

Wouldn't mind doing the Great North Run, could be something to aim for.

Well nearly a year on from running the London marathon, and still waiting for a sense of accomplishment. I did hardly any training, so maybe that's why it didn't feel like a big deal.

I decided to take up running as a new year resolution. I've done two park runs in 4 months, because each time I've injured a foot.

I just found out I have a 25:30 5K and a 6:30 mile with little training other than football.

The race I'm about to do on Sunday, I've done it a year ago. In the meantime, I was supposed to do a 16km race but it was cancelled due to terrorist attacks and did a half-marathon which was great.
Looking forward to Sunday morning.

I'd quite like to start running to lose some weight. Any beginner tips?

Depends on how athletic you are. Maybe increase by a mile every three times you run or something like that?

I'd definitely recommend the C25K app, I used it 4/5 years ago to get me started, within a year I'd done multiple 10k races and a Half Marathon. Doing the Brum Half again this year with a bit of a twist, a friend of mine is celebrating his 50th by organising a team of 50 people dressed as 50 different superheroes raising money for Birmingham Childrens Hospital, I've been roped into running as The Incredible Hulk :ffs:. Done a couple of HM in the past but both times I was carrying an injury and just missed out on the sub 2hr finish, fully fit I think I'd be looking at around 1:45.

Looking at upping my game with one eye on doing the full Marathon in Birmingham next October, I'm currently running around 25 miles a week, I'd imagine I'd need to be looking more like 40-50 miles a week. Once the Euros is over I'll start properly training.

I'd definitely encourage people to take it up though, it's properly addictive once you get the bug, I've probably lost the best part of 4 stone from when I first started

I started properly running about 3 years ago and managed to gradually get to 10k in 49/50mins within about 6 months. Agree it's massively addictive once you get in to it. Think it was too much too quickly though as I got tendonitis and couldn't run again for another year or so.

Now every time I run (3/4/5km) I can't go for more than a few weeks without getting a new injury. First it's my back, then my ankle, then knee again..

I guess some people's bodies aren't made for running.

My tip would be don't start running to lose weight. Start running because it's good for you.

Diet to lose weight. Use something like the My Fitness Pal app to track your calories.

I get a numb foot every time I try to run any sort of distance which is really fucking annoying. I can keep going but it feels like I'm running with a trainer full of sand so it ain't exactly conducive to a great run.

I'm an idiot. First I get at the wrong tube stop and since the place where the race starts is not the same as where the race stops I couldn't give my backpack to the people organising. So I had to run with my backpack! Needless to say, I didn't run very well.

Proper pissed off at my stupidity.

I would appreciate advice from anyone knowledgeable here. I am slowly building up my distance, and my latest run was about 14km/8.5 miles. I think when I get past around 10 miles I'm going to need something with a bit more energy in it than water. Can anyone that runs at this distance recommend if there is any difference between the umpteen available energy-style Lucozade type drinks, or whether I'd be better off trying an energy gel / some sort of very small snack at the 1hr/1hr30 mark. Thankee.

I'd probably dilute about half of one of them bottles of lucozade hydrate into your water. I read somewhere that sports drinks on their own are too fast acting for it to sufficiently hydrate you but they have their uses. In terms of energy a few Jaffa cakes would do the trick, might be tricky to keep em from sticking if your running though. Jelly babies are good too.

I thought I'd fucked myself over this week. Did a circuit during the day where I incorporated some explosive jumps, went for a jog later in the day and pulled up about 5 minutes in and couldn't bear weight on my foot, thought I might have done a stress fracture. Was in pain for a day or so but it's gone away now seemingly. Was okay in the gym but haven't tested it by jogging yet.

Whenever I'm running proper distances (for me thats 10m+) I keep a fist of Jelly Babies in my pocket, whether it's psychological or not I don't know but they certainly seem to give me a boost, every mile above 10 I pop one in and just keep it in my mouth, does the trick for me as I find the sports drinks quite sickly and often make me feel more thirsty

Birmingham Half Marathon this coming weekend, trained well for it, done my final prep run today, looking forward to the event now.

2hr I'll be happy with, think I'll be just outside it though. The kid I'm running it with done a mock HM this weekend and clocked 1hr35, said he hadn't eaten breakfast and forgot to take a drink so was off colour!!! :eyes:

I've been a keen runner for a while, not quick though, 22m 5k and about 50m for 10k, did the London Marathon last year but got injured at 15miles and had to walk the last 11 miles, was a shame as was on for about 4h30. Put me off doing another for a while!

My next event is the Cyprus international challenge in Nov. 4 days of 4 events, 6k timetrial, 11k hill run, half marathon and a 10k, should be fun but tiring!

I'm by no means a fucking expert, as I'm an unfit fat shit, but no-one has mentioned this so it's probably worth mentioning.... Make sure you wear the right footwear and run on the right surface, at least to start with. If you try doing road running in a pair of gammy old Sambas or something, it'll fuck your feet and your joints up and make you quit pretty quick.

I tried to take up running a couple of years ago for the same reasons and found if you're pretty out of shape, it's really fucking difficult to pick up. I couldn't run for more than a minute or two before I was panting and wanting to toss it off and go get a pint. You need hella willpower at the beginning to ignore the pain and keep going, cos that's the only way you get better

If running is painful then you're going too fast. The only time you should feel pain when running is when racing or doing very hard training sessions. Neither of those things really apply to someone taking up the sport.
