So like most Americans I am just now getting into soccer/football. I have an interest in moving to Scotland in the nearish future (The more I read the harder it seems). But when I do my research I don't quite see how the fan structure is over there. Are most people (f.e. in the Highlands) a Celtic, Rangers, etc. fan or do they stay more local and like clubs like Inverness Caledonian Thistle or Ross County.
Mainly just looking for a run down of Scottish football fandom.

Hi Scot.

I'm in my 40s now and lived in Scotland as a school kid and then into my twenties to know a little bit about these sort of thing. I grew up in East Lothian which is about 20 miles from Edinburgh. What I found at school was that Rangers and Celtic were easily the most popular sides, a little bit like Manchester United or Liverpool fans being 'easy' to support in England. Hibernian and Hearts were also quite well supported (the two Edinburgh teams). As I grew older I moved to Edinburgh and adopted Hearts as my chosen Scottish club (geography and it was an interesting time in the club's history) and travelled across the country watching them. I'd say probably the only place in Scotland that probably rivals the old firm supporters is Aberdeen, and that's probably due to where it is located in Scotland, I am guessing there are less Old Firm fans from the granite City but that's a hunch versus any real investigation.

So to summarise, there are loyal fans that support their local sides, but there are a hell of a lot of Rangers and Celtic fans, which are passed down amongst generations probably so will likely stay that way, especially as its so easy to watch games on TV these days sadly.
