Opposing the pedestrianisation of Norwich city centre!!!!
I know we had this a few times on TFF, but there's new people here and some others may have changed their minds.
I was listening to a debate on the radio the other night about this in the context of the Boston bomber being given the death sentence.

I'm opposed to the death penalty and take the view that if even one person is wrongly executed that is unacceptable. I also don't think it acts as a deterrent and that it is morally reprehensible for a state to take a life.

Your views please......

Mistakes have been made when sentencing, for that reason alone it shouldn't be reinstated.

No. It seems logically void to impose the "ultimate" punishment for anything, before you even get onto the other arguments.

No. How can a society be governed on the basis that taking someone's life is wrong if they do it to people are break laws?

No, nobody should have the power or right to take somebody's life.

Yes, for child killers, serial killers and serial peodophiles and the like. With modern day forensics, and advancement in DNA technology, where the case is absolutely proven, hang them. What justification can there be for spending millions from the public purse to keep them locked up for the rest of their life.

And yes before you ask, I would pull the trigger, press the button, administer the injection. Whatever it takes.

No. The state should never have the power to take someone's life, no matter how reprehensible the crime may be. There have been innocent people who have been executed, which as said above should be enough to not reinstate it.

Also, for me a life behind bars in a shitty cell thinking about what they have done is a far worse punishment than a painless death by injection (unless they fuck it up as with recently), or a short death by electric chair.

I do think that we should stop affording as many rights as we do to certain prisoners, not those who have genuinely just done wrong and made mistakes, but those who have justified a life sentence who deserve to spend their lives behind bars, I believe they should be made as miserable as possible, and be made to live their lives like that.

An eye for an eye is a fundamentally shit ideology though let's face it, if the justice system was run that way in this country it could/would have disastrous consequences.
Good job I`m not in charge of the Justice system then.;)

It may sound harsh but why should the tax payer pay for the imprisonment of the sick and twisted such as Ian Brady?

So, if someone you loved was innocent of a crime and you knew they were innocent, but they'd been charged with the crime and sentenced to death, you'd find it acceptable that they're being put to death?

Brady has stated many time that he wanted to be put to death. He's living in total and utter misery at the moment..which he deserves.

No Id be absolutely devastated of course. Id be in favour of the introduction of Death Row which will enable an appeal of a decision to make sure it is crystal clear

And even with that system in place, innocent people have been murdered in the USA.

Yet at the last count it was costing the taxpayer about £400,000 a year to keep him in misery. That's nearly £25 million in the time he's been locked away. Big price for keeping someone unhappy.

True but cases are extremely rare and I have faith in our Justice system over the Americans.
... A justice system that no longer includes the death penalty, and one where innocent people have still been put away.

In the USA it costs a lot more money to execute a convict than it does to lock them up for life.

Unfortunately even when so called definitive proof has been gained mistakes have still been made. You can't use the law to differentiate between 'We're really sure kill him' to 'We're pretty sure so don't kill him'.

Dependent upon the severity of the crime, I think some should spend time in solitary confinement for a set amount of time in order to stew over what they have done. Not to be allowed visits from family whatsoever. No television within their cells, or any other privileges that come with that. And the maximum amount of time allowed to be locked in their cell increased from 21 days up to 3 months for bad behavior.

I would also like to see repeat offenders treated more and more harshly each time, including the above being made stricter each time they spend time in prison, and the time spent there increased each time they commit a crime, rather than the same sentence being handed out each time a crime is committed.

I'm against the death penalty however a question for you all...

If a prisoner who has been convicted for life, admits their crime and has no chance of release, would you allow assisted suicide?

Considering people who are free cannot even get assisted suicide at present. No. And even if that is actually allowed now which I do believe it should be, then I believe a prisoner should forfeit that right.

Definitely not!! Easy way out. I'd be almost as strongly against that as introducing the death penalty!

Except you can't ever get to that. DNA evidence isn't infallible.

I'm in favour of it for certain crimes, although I think the death penalty is too good for the likes of Michael Adebolajo and Jihadi John.

Absolutely no. The UK (and the rest of Europe) aren't some fundamentalist Middle-East country.
