Aldershot have said that Barry Smith has turned down a contract extension for personal reasons and will be leaving after the weekend's final game.

Seems like something the Aldershot fans would be quite pleased with from what I've seen? Who next, Gary Waddock again?

Yesssssss. The next appointment is massive - get it right and we'll win back the lost fans, get it wrong (again) and it could be the end of our club.
We need someone with a decent knowledge of the Conference... Who's available??

It's not been a great season although thats partly because the last 2 months have been poor (at the end of February we were 13th which was ok) and our home form has been shocking all season!

Personally I want to wish Barry all the best and if I see him on Saturday I will say that to him. I completely understand if the move south hasnt worked for his family.

If i'm honest the timing of this is terrible, we have some decent young players out of contract and no manager to offer them a deal so we could lose out on not only the player for next season but also lose out on potential compensation.

Kevin Wilkin is probably going to be without a job once Brackley are relegated as well.

Looking back over our past managers, and I think Smith is the first manager to leave without being sacked since Waddock left us in 2009.

Deals have to be offered 30 days before the end of the current contract, so if we are going to offer them with a view to compensation, we would already have done so, as all the players current deals are up on the 30th April.

Personally, I think it is a shame Barry is going, he's a decent honourable man, but I understand his reasons. When I see him next I'll shake his hand and wish him all the best.

As for the next man, experience of this division is a must. I'm not one for going back, but Waddock would get the fans back and sell season tickets. Other than him, I'd quite like Steve Burr, but think he would be out of our price range given he'd have to relocate. Yates is a good shout too.

nice to see all the Tranmere fans offering you Brabin - unfortunately unless your chairman is an idiot he'll know all about Brabin - only a mad chairman from a team new to the league would take him - so Tranmere it looks like you have to sack him yourself - or hope York are really desperate.... ;)

Oh right, I was just thinking it would be pretty bad luck if Smith leaving meant we lost out on either keeping or at least getting compensation for the likes of Browne, Beckles and Gallagher.

I also wonder if this has been hanging over him for a while, because at the end of February we were 13th and playing some of our best football all season, and had turned the corner at home. Then we collapsed in March and have stumbled through this month.

Waddock is a short term answer to a long term problem in my opinion, and i'm not sure about Burr since he was sacked at Chester with them lower in the table than us! What's Richard Money doing at the moment? If he was interested that might not be a bad shout as he has recent experience of getting promoted in this division, which I think is what we need next season.

Fantastic news. Cheered up a rather mundane Monday. If Gary Waddock were to be appointed it certainly would attract the lost fans and should mean attacking football. However he would have a considerably smaller budget.

I say bring in Waddock but unfortunately, i'm not in charge :ds:

You're second in the league you clown, have a bit of respect for wrexham and tranmere fans who's clubs are far bigger and would trade places in an instant.

Sorry I forgot that you win something for finishing second... We all know play offs we'll bottle it

Hey FGR want to swap positions? I'm sure Pennock would be sacked then.

Didn't know him but I gather from a few people he was a decent chap. When he was appointed many said it was a gamble by the club, but take it from me, he took the biggest gamble. When I moved long distance with work I moved within a large stable multinational group and knew alot of the key players where I was going to and that was difficult enough. To uproot a young family and move 400 odd mile to a small unstable company in a notoriously volatile industry took some guts.
Good luck to the fella. He has shown in the past that he can do a job in the right climate; for whatever reason this wasn't it.
