So what have I to look forward too on my travels next season?

Living in Shropshire I have Wrexham, Solihull Moors, Notts County and Altrincham close (ish). All been visited before.

Wrexham, shitty pubs in the actual town, but the excellent Bridge End Inn at Ruabon is a must for me before (and after) the game).

Solihull Moors, what a pain to get too by public transport, liked their clubroom but I doubt they will let us in this time (it was a night crappy cup match when we've played them the once).

Notts County, plenty of decent pubs in Notts of course, so no problem getting a few pints in when visiting.

Altrincham, not so good pub wise but I have stopped off at the little Dunham Massey Brewery and buy a load of bottles on the two occasions we've played them.

Please list the best places for safe awayday pubs near your grounds: No replies needed from fans of Torquay, Stockport County, Chesterfield, Daggers and Redbridge, Woking, Aldershot or Barnet.

Cheers!

You didn't mention Halifax so I will say you have that trip to look forward to. Halifax town centre is one big pub all in 10/15 mins walk of the ground. Three pigeons is closest but driving by on a match day it seems very home dominated.

We are probably more well liked for the pre match sesh in the town than actually going to the ground in away teams opinions I reckon.

Altrincham is only 3 miles away from me and they’ve really done the place up recently.

There’s the market where you can get food and beer inside, there’s a lovely Belgian pub if you wished to go continental - there’s a few places in goose green.

There’s the bog standard wetherspoons etc also

Sorry, should have allowed anyone and everyone to recommend some pubs, so much will have changed beer scene wise everywhere.

I remember Halifax from many years ago, but haven't been for a long time; April 1990 in fact. So only 31 years!

Is it still in Yorkshire?

Belgian Beer and driving is not a good option, but I might take the train next time.

Glad to hear they've spent some time and money? The whole town appeared a bit 'run down' on my two visits.

Come to Pools and drink in The Corner Flag, literally in the corner of the ground, cheap, social club vibe, away fan friendly, drink anywhere else and you might get knacked and I'm only half joking.

Think we have about 10 clubs within 100 miles. So lots of nearby ones. Might do Chesterfield and go see the spire. Weekend at Weymouth to go to Bovington

Halifax was my favourite away day of the bit of last season we were allowed to do. Easy journey but long enough for a few on the train, great pubs, fantastic away terrace. It was the Saturday just before Christmas and we came from behind to win 4-2, mind, which all helps.

Also enjoyed Maidenhead, Eastleigh, Dover and Woking, for a variety of reasons, of the non-traditional ones.

For some reason I've never been to Hartlepool. I did have a good RAF mate from there once. He loved boxing; never won a bout in his life and he had the biggest cauliflower ears I've ever seen.

I also remember a TV documentary about a Boxing Club in West Hartlepool. The guy that ran it was ace, he said something like; "To be heavyweight champion of the world you only have to fight one man, to be heavyweight champion of Hartlepool you have to fight everyone".

I have an open invite from some Sunderland fans to stay with when we play in the North East, just never taken them up when we've played your lot.

Weymouth was comfortably my favourite away day of 2019-20 when we could go to away games, loads of pubs on the seafront and by the harbour so really can't go wrong there. Again it helps that we played them on August Bank Holiday Monday, the weather was superb and we won 4-3. Top weekender.

As for us - Ruislip is fairly barren for pubs, I'd imagine our clubhouse will be off limits when Grimsby visit which is a shame. There's a typical 'Spoons opposite Ruislip Manor Station and a couple of pubs by Ruislip station (both 5-10 minute walk from the ground).

If you're travelling into Central London first then there are plenty of options there before taking the Met Line up to Ruislip, it's around 35 minutes from Baker Street.

Yeah they had a lot of work done on it the last 3-4 years, so much so that it won the “best high street” in the country last year (or maybe the year before) it’s really changed no end.

Fair point about the belgian beer and driving - the alty line is from manchester to chester, so not sure how that works for you, or else you’d need to get the train into picc then altrincham is the end of the line on one of the tramlines.

Is it that shit?
The ground is not actually that bad, they’ll have the best pitch in the league thanks to Arsenal and there are pubs outside the ground (not sure how good they are).
It’s more that the town has a non-descript feel, their support is belligerent yet pitiful and their chairman is a bellend.

Weymouth seafront is lovely.
Wembley Boxpark is another possible drinking location on the way to Ruislip.

Manchester trains from Wales run through Shrewsbury, so it shouldn't be a problem getting there and if I had to go on into Manchester I'd be able to have a beer or two before popping back South again.

Hoping we don't get Weymouth on a Tuesday

I've got 'The Hop & Vine' on my radar for Ruislip.

Ah yeah, I'd forgotten about the H&V, just because it's the far side of the high street (probably a 15 minute walk to the ground from there). Popular with a lot of our supporters too - I think Pinner Stones is better placed to comment but from what I can gather it gets very busy in there on a matchday.

Since we've got Grimsby and Southend supporters on here, which pubs would you recommend locally? The former I'm probably going to drive to but Southend has got train, beer, football written all over it (even if it's a Tuesday night).

I remember that game everything Wootten hit that day was flying in the net. Looking forward to getting days like that back.
Of course I'd hope the result would be different haha

Grimsby it's self is pretty dire for good pubs but Cleethorpes (where we actually play of course) has improved greatly over the last few years, even if we have lost a few pubs.

Willy's brewpub and the pub on the railway platform are the best two with Message In a Bottle another option, it's a beer shop with a tasting area (and cask ales). All are a long walk from the ground though. Fish & Chips near the ground are not so good, again a long walk away is the excellent 'Steels', it's a none bookable plaice (sic) (sit in only) that's just a wonderful throwback. Be prepared to queue, get there early!

Never had a drink round the ground but they're mostly home pubs. Best bet is getting the train into town and going pub there and walking down.

Chesterfield looked alright.

Mind, I was on a train
It's good for a booze up still. I've moved back last year for the first time in about 12 years and it's improved I think in terms of plenty of decent places for a drink and something to eat. There is significant investment in the town at the moment along the old canal, around the ground and in the town centre with lots of new offices, bars, restaurants etc being built & some of it actually looks really good. Grounds a 20 min walk or about £3 in a taxi from town centre so still a good location.

Yep probably my favourite away day of all our time in non league Halifax, even getting pumped on the pitch didn’t spoil it.

Next time you're in Wrexham town centre, try The Parish, The Fat Boar and The Royal Oak. All 3 have excellent beer selections.

Also Levant do brilliant food and cocktails if that's more your bag.
