I’m not having gravy on chips being acceptable, my dad didn’t grow up down a coal mine....! No but honestly, who wants soggy chips? A bit of ketchup on one side for dunking them in and a bit of salt does it for me.
Agree with you on the soggy chips...a bit of vinegar is OK, certainly not swimming in the stuff, but not too much salt...as for the "salt and sauce" in Edinburgh, that is gipping. My preference is for sweet chilli sauce with my fish and chips...mayo on chips, continental stylee, takes a bit of getting used to but is actually quite nice.

Heathen - you would have been burnt at the stake in the past for some of them awful un-godly choices

Can you actually get 'sweet chilli sauce' as an option in a chippy?

Also what does Gipping mean?

The thing with northern chips is, is that they don’t go soggy when you put gravy on. Unless they are cooked by someone from down south.

I like the salt n sauce of Edinburgh . In a bracing east coast Scottish winter it's just the thing to go with a poke of chips.

But let's face it as things stand the best local dish on offer in any of our league two locations right now overall is surely the Staffordshire oatcakes you get around Burslem. Not the only reason to enjoy being in the same league as Port Vale, but a good one, still.

Tried the oat cakes last time I was in Burseem, not bad but prefer the Titanic served up at the most excellent Bulls Head.

Chips + Salt + Vinegar + a couple of those Tesco meat free burgers = yummy

+ and sometimes ketchup too but that's not an essential ingredient IMO.

No.......I will give you a tip if you ever come up to play Salford. Get yourself into Bury for pre season drinks
Plenty of cheap sub £2.50 pints and you can nip across the road to Bury Market and sample some of there world famous black pudding

Chips with brown sauce or chips and gravy are the only acceptable options

I regularly have lamp chops, chips and gravy at home!

Why would you drown the taste of fish and chips with gravy? Unless they aren't any good of course.
The best fish and chips in the country last year were in Exmouth, Devon. Just saying...

May St near Vale is excellent but is hidden away so not easy to find unless you know it’s there.

As for the argument... chips and gravy is the tops every time!

As I was reading the thread I was deciding who I wanted to come up from the National League and couldn’t really choose. But then I saw the most recent debate...

Gravy on chips is a must and don’t find the chips go soggy at all! One of the best fish and chips I ever had was up at Scarborough. Was absolutely incredible.

Our last away match. Just a great day out, managed to spend the entire first half hiding from the wind in that shack/bar in the away end when apparently we got battered, emerged for the second half just to see Quigley twat our ‘keeper in the face and turn the game. Looked like being a proper title race at that point, good times.

Sure about three of our group got Covid from that trip, mind. Funny thinking back, pubs were absolutely rammed, players leaping into the crowd when we scored. Fortnight later the country’s shut down and Barrow was the first hotspot.

Weirdly enough, I don't actually think we were a hot-spot of such, the local NHS Trust did a good job of testing early doors so the numbers were more of a genuine representation of what was happening around the country. It does feel like a lifetime ago though!

Was you introduced to the Wigan Mix Grill....Meat Pie, Steak pie.....Chicken Pasty and a sausage roll
It's taken 9 long, excruciating months, but finally a post I can get on board with from you!!

FWIW - I'm not a gravy on chips man (though I do love chips with cottage pie and gravy). But a shit ton of salt and vinegar is a must.

Mushy peas can get in the bin, and only one chippy I've been to (Charles in Cheltenham) does a curry sauce I actually like.

Have a read of this and thank me later.

I'd forgotten about this one. Now this is wrong. Very wrong.

You can't have gravy on chips. You can have gravy on spaghetti bolognaise as a bolognaise replacement cos fuck tomatoes.

Gravy on chips is okay, best fish and chips ever are to be found at the magpie Whitby. The only problem is you have to get their early

You lot from the fens are odd. Having lived in Norfolk, Suffolk & Essex can confirm that curry sauce is usually the staple in East Anglia. My favourite as well with fish. Reserve chips and gravy for pie.

The pie, mash and liquor at Orient is surely in this conversation.

Ha, I thought about mentioning that, as it's certainly among the (very) best of what is on offer food-wise in the grounds themselves. Gotta admit I've had better pie and mash in caffs in, especially, Southend, though.....

The Pie, Mash and Liqour at Orient is good, not brilliant but good. By the way, I am a cockney that hates jellied Eels. Disgusting stuff.

Best meal at a match has to be the pies they used to serve at Morecambe. Bloody delicious!

Chips should be served with salt and vinegar. Nothing else is needed. Take your fancy Northern ways and condiments and poke 'em!

Utter sacrilege. The answer to the question, “Where can you find the best food served at a football ground” is always Kidderminster.

like when you have pie when out a pub, why would you want mash when you can have chips and gravy with it, yum!

Agreed though, i wouldn’t put the gravy over the chips just over the pie and kinda dunk them in

Bristol Rovers, Swindon, Northampton and Rochdale replace Cambridge, Cheltenham, Bolton and Tranmere.
If Morecambe beat Bolton tomorrow, Morecambe instead of Tranmere.

Torquay and Stockport replace Grimsby and Southend
