Puel takes on his old club. He's making a good impression with us so far. Attacking football and bringing the younger players in more. Positive so far. Stark difference to his Saints days. We dont usually do well vs Soton so 1-1 draw.
I think this season proves our issues last season go deeper than Puel. No replacement for Mane and Pelle well and truly stitched him up. Pellegrino hasn't been an improvement, could even say in some matches he's been more defensive than Puel was here.
Suspect Jamie Vardy will get some stick after his stamp on VvD last season, so that'll give him the extra motive to score.
We could really do with winning our next two home games but I think we'll get a draw here. 1-1. Saints to score late.
Worst I've seen us play for a few years . Absolutely no fight or ball control, bunch of cowards on a cold night and Pellegrino deserves the sack based on tonight's performance alone.
Claude Puel wasn’t a very good manager for us and was rightly sacked.
Unfortunately we replaced him with someone even worse, but that doesn’t mean we were wrong to sack Puel as we were only heading downwards with him as well.

Why was he rightly sacked? 8th place and a cup final seems pretty good to me, considering that you end up selling on a few players to Liverpool every year. There's the argument that Puel finished with a lot less points than Koeman did in his last season but what does a club like Southampton expect to achieve in the Premier League? Barring the top 6, the rest of the league is interchangeable and any of those clubs could easily find themselves in the Championship. You weren't in a relegation dogfight, you competed in Europe and made it to a cup final.
Wouldn't really say we competed in Europe. Handed a piss easy group but he put out weakened sides and we finished 3rd.
We finished 8th because of how rubbish the teams below us were.
It was the home form which really got him the sack. We scored 18 goals in the 19 home games at St. Mary's. Great value at £600 for a season ticket... He was just too defensive.
Fair play to him though, he finally showed us attacking football at St. Mary's last night and that's helped a few fans turn on the people in charge. Positives.
Yeah I understand his sacking. His Saints stint was dour as fuck. I dont agree he'd have eventually have taken you down, but the way it was he'd probably have bored everyone to death. Strange that his philosophy was so different at Southampton.
I understand his sacking too, we sacked Chris Powell cos he was boring, and a lot of people disagreed with that (and have since had their old tweets RT'd like fuck). Southampton clearly have problems far bigger than the manager. It's a bit like putting all of England's problems solely down to Southgate.
I get it. I just think that it was incredibly short-sighted. There was never a worry about them going down under Puel. They'd lost Mane, Fonte, Pelle and Wanyama. I understand that fans want pretty football, but giving the chap only one season after losing a host of talent (and Van Dijk having his head turned) was a bit harsh. I just don't think that most fans have any patience these days.
They don't, because fans don't buy "it takes time" these days, due to many examples of clubs being turned around within a matter of weeks/months. Leicester, ourselves/Burnley, and Burton will be used as examples in the top 3 divisions for a while. Clubs don't want to lose interest of the fans either, once they get out of the habit of going to games it's very difficult to get them back and paying the money again, hence why boring football very rarely wins in the long term.
