How is Southend’s squad building going? Very much looking forward to your friendly visit to Maidstone this Saturday. With pay on the day it should almost feel normal.

Don't know much has been built to be honest. Far too many of the perpetual losers still at the heart of things. Currently just two out and out centre forwards at the club and one of them is a 20 year old who's played 14 games. Could be saved if Murphy doesn't get injured as Brown does love a 4-5-1. Have got four strikers on trial though, knowing Brown we'll take all of them or none of them.

Lots of lovely words from Phil Brown, some great sentiment but it all feels a bit like we're just trying to be fitter and outlast everybody else and be 'up for the battle' rather than having any meaningful plan to be near the top end of the division.

Two keepers didn't play a pre-season tonight as they've got covid and one of the better looking signings in Josh Coulson is already injured! Doesn't look like we've paid penance to the football gods just yet.

Booked in the Southend Travelodge for our 4th September visit, only the best for me.

Which boozers do away fans usually drink in, or can any Southend fans point me in the direction of some decent boozers that I can drink in if I keep my head down? I can't imagine police wanting us mixing with Southend fans too much given how many are likely to travel down.

Love to help you but I haven't lived in Southend for near on 35 years so when I'm there for football I'm driving. Plus I have no idea what pubs have survived lockdown, I haven't been to Southend since pubs reopened.

Hope you do bring a decent crowd, they'll be few and far between away wise I would have thought, I don't know why the Grimsby game has been moved to a Friday, they would have bought an alright number.
Kings Lynn has been moved to Friday as well, so the 10 they would have bought is probably going to be 5 now.

Not sure if your driving or getting the rattler but use c2c trains from Fenchurch to get to Southend central much cheaper and nicer as alternative is Liverpool Street line which is so much more expensive and slower.

Lots of pubs along the front wouldn’t use any around the ground very home support based, Dickens pub by Southend central station is a sports pub used by us when we use to play away games there but not for a while mind.

Hasn't the plan to build a new stadium in that location been around for at least the last 15 years now?
A bit like us, Southend and GTFC have both been moving since the mid 90's I reckon. Neither of us have actually moved an inch, but spent thousands on projects and plans that don't come to fruition.

Hope for their sake it does, looks good and a 21,000 seater stadium would be future proof (unless a Sugar Daddy takes them to 'the Premiershite').

30*

It's very tiresome and I won't actually believe it till I see a brick being laid but without getting optimistic with the backing of the council (due to the housing project) it does look more promising this time round previous versions have fallen by the wayside in short as Sainsbury's pulled out of building a superstore on Roots Hall and the council couldn't back the last plan as it was meant to be a leisure park (instead of housing) and they were afraid it would be the final nail in the coffin for the high street.

The club certainly doesn't have a future at RH.

I predict that the 1400 homes are built. And thats it.
I predict you are correct. Let's not also forget that the current plans show a 3 sided monstrosity, without the main stand! The stand that will have all the non-football revenue streams. So if the pipe dream ever comes off we're going from a falling down shithole that in no way brings in income to the club to a shiny new 3-sided soulless hole that in no way brings income to the club. Oh and I'm sure we'll have all the assurances Oxford United have had that, that fourth side will be built one day.

Love to know who had the balls on that website to list the community and academy domes (number 12 and 13).
Most won't know but we already have those. Many years ago Ron paid over £1M to buy, dismantle and have delivered to the current training ground some unused soccer domes.
If you take a trip down to the training ground and look at where number 17 is on that masterplan map you'll see the domes, rusting to oblivion.

Shrimpurh - I disagree the club doesn't have a future at Roots Hall. It doesn't have a future at Roots Hall with Ron as owner of the club.

No way they will build a 21,000 seat stadium for a non-league club. We were promised something like that by Morrison Shand but it was completed as a 6,000 capacity and the capacity now is less than 5,000 due to SAG.

21,000 would be idiotic, we’re a similarly supported club to Southend, probably a bit better supported when we’re at the same level, and our ground is pointlessly big. It’s great on the odd occasion it’s even half full or more, but in general I would much rather we had a 10,000 capacity that always felt full.

First phase is 14,000. Another reason, if it even gets built, I can see it remaining 3 sided, just like Oxford.

I agree with you though, we don't need 21,000 as a final stadium, certainly not at our current level. We only need something bigger than Roots Hall if we can actually sustain second tier football long term and that is as unlikely to happen at this point as it's ever been in our history.

Not a lot to see here really, 80% or so of that debt is owed to the owners various companies.
The one I want to see is the next year, where the mysterious wiping off of around £10M worth of that debt took place, including paying in full the Sainsburys loan and paying off all bank overdrafts.

That was due in April so we might get it in 2 years

If we're going well there'll be more than 10,000 in the ground this season at some point. I wouldn't be surprised to see 16,000 if we're in the playoffs against any of Stockport, Grimsby, Chesterfield or Wrexham.

That makes sense as 14,000 is pretty big in this and Div 2. If there's scope to extend at a later point even better.
What you don't want is a three sides ground, we had a version of it for years and it was rubbish.

Yeah, definitely, and it’s really useful having the big ground on those occasions. But, on balance, I’d rather have a fuller ground week in, week out than the space there on the odd occasion we need it.

Sounds like Brown is getting frustrated with Ron already judging by his comments after today’s game!

Hi everyone, finally joined this forum unfortunately at the lowest we’ve ever been, still preferable than the plastic premiership. Shrimper 95 mate, Brown has a history of signing has beens, I take it your talking about Ricky Holmes, sorry mate £1000 a,week , no way , make Ron right.Looking forward to visiting many new grounds and real ale pubs . Don’t think we’re any better than mid league, personally wil be happy with that. Hope, everyone has a happy season.

I think we will do ok this season. there are the new dynamics to deal with.. a lot of the old stalwarts won't return due to fear of covid, which is fair enough.. but there is a new breed of 40/50 yr olds that actually want to go and watch some footy, rather then get it sent to them via a Jeff stelling betting site..
my groups gone from 5 seasos to 8 ..
we just want to see some goals and some attacking footy.. something to get us off the seats. that hasn't happened for 3 long years.
