Let's be honest, if supporting a football club was all about the football itself, being a lower league fan would be shit. Most of the time we watch shit players play shit football at shit grounds, and the only reason we all suffer it is because standing half-cut with your mates on an open terrace at the opposite end of the country laughing as you concede a fourth goal in injury time gives you a great sense of both camaraderie and accomplishment. Gallows humour is the order of the day, and highlights involving the spherical object are few and far between.

But whilst community and a sense of belonging and, frankly, force of bloody habit are all overriding factors in our attendance, once in a blue moon the useless bastards we usually content ourselves with booing and berating actually put such a big smile on our faces that makes all the heartache, disappointment and drudgery worthwhile. The moment that we'll talk about it for years and years to come on those same open terraces when the game in front of you is so godawful you can't bear to watch, despite the £100 in train tickets you've shelled out on to be there. Y'know, the one that you still absentmindedly punch the air with your fist when you daydream about it. So... what's yours?

You might expect mine to be the time that Orient did the Greatest Thing Wot They Ever Dun In Are History (TM), when we relegated our hated lifelong rivals, Oxford, to the conference, but in actual fact it was this:

The best bit about it all was the fact that the arrogant tits in the away end had spent the past five minutes singing "We'll never play you again" before THAT moment strangled them in mid-taunt. Sure, so we let Nicklaus Bendtner score a hat-trick in the replay, but that won't ever take any gloss off what was an incredible, famous night in E10.

Surprisingly being a Notts fan there are quite a few but out of the bunch despite losing the game....
This strike from Don O'Riordan in 1991 against Spurs
I was 16 and being in that away end was magical, we went up to the top flight that season too

Hard to pick just one moment.

Ian Bogie provided most of them. Three screamers, the first, an outrageous lob forcing a cup replay in the dying seconds away at Premier League Everton after that c*** duncan ferguson scored in the 88nd minute, the second another stunner setting up victory in the replay, the third scoring against the Shit in a Championship game after like 5 seconds of play. What a fucking man.

Honorary mentions :

The shit missing an open goal after the ball gets stuck in the mud in the penalty area. HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA.

This whole match, effectively guaranteeing automatic promotion, including the 32nd goal of the season from life long Vale fan Tom Pope, was one big surreal moment.

Trust someone from Burslem to not be able to count to one.

But I fucking loved Ian Bogie, talented lazy bastard that he was, so I'll let you off.

I still don't believe there has been a better goal to win a play off final (or any final frankly) than Ryan Donaldson's that got us promoted two years ago. Ok I'm massively biased but given the tension, the petering out of our season post Christmas and the sheer class of that goal, I'm happy to stand by my assessment. If Messi or Ronaldo had scored that, we'd still hear about it every week.

Aside from that, we haven't had too many moments to cheer in recent years but going back we had a few. I'll have a think.

From the mists of time, I can also offer a glorious defeat:

From promotion favourites to mid table by christmas DF on the verge of a sacking only to turn it round with a remarkable away record and just three defeats from Jan onwards only to seemingly toss it away against Southend. Last game, playing badly away at already relegated Tranmere, then find out Southend are losing 2-1 away at Morecambe and we score moments later. Soares took a touch seemed to lose it only to regain his ground, it took ages to go in then hit the back of the net and send us wild. Hundreds of fans on the pitch, then we sat out the game to win 1-0. The last few mins of Tranmere pressure were unbearable. A great moment when Etuhu blasted it clear in the 95th minute and we spilled onto the pitch. Makes it all worth it.

Either time at Wembley (2007 was far more enjoyable than 2015, but 2015 had a far more dramatic ending and bigger consequences) or beating City on our way to the JPT final in the 06/07 season. Unfortunately a lot of our great cup memories and things come before my time, run to the QF in 2008 was a good one though.

In the main we've been awful since I started watching Rovers in 2002, lots of fine memories around 2006/07/08 though.

Aside from the obvious Wembley game, I think the final whistle at Whitehawk is the thing that's made me smile most about Daggers in the past 5 years (And not just because it meant we could get out of that shithole). Just the prospect of a 3rd round tie away at Everton, felt like something all the supporters deserved and the way we done it was just immense, albeit absolutely terrifying. That whole day at Everton was just great, reminds you of why you support a club like Dagenham for the very occasional days like that - just makes it feel all the more special.

Lot of Luton ones, most posted above. However this was the moment where I knew we had the league one and the non league hell was over.

Or from our perspective

Ha we've actually won it!

Realistically that Cambridge match didnt mean too much in the grand scheme of things that season, i think we would have still been 12 points clear at the top even if we had lost that game with some fairly easy games left to go (we had Hyde left to play which was more or less a banked win that season given how bad they were, we still won it even though the players had been out celebrating all week!) and i dont think the gap would have ever got smaller than 9 points if all else remained the same. Of course losing that night might have precipitated some sort of collapse as you dont know the butterfly affect but it didnt look likely.

Was definitely good we made it easy for ourselves for once though, think we needed after the preceding 5 years!

Rainy Wednesday night, 5,000 Cobblers fans, Liverpool away. When Osman slotted home the winner in front of the cup, the feeling was just immense, be hard pressed to get that again! That whole cup run was extraordinary, beat Brighton in round one easily, beat Reading on pens at the Madjeski after drawing 3-3 after a late late equaliser in extra time, beating Liverpool before eventually bowing out at Ipswich in round 4.

Dagenham away in April 2013 was also a massively satisfying game. Down in London early to get rat arsed and to be 3 up at half time was awesome, and we finally clawed our way out of the relegation zone for the first time since September, thanks to Mr Wilder.

Would also mention Cheltenham in the playoff second leg the season before our great escape, Sunday night in the sun in a packed away end, sailed through to Wembley. Aidy Boothroyd fucked it at Wembley and that defeat to Bradford is one of the worst games I've seen.
