Wonder what the biggest "non local" rivalries are? There's the obvious Man U v Leeds and Man U v Liverpool, but I recall that Wycombe had some long-distance hatred too but can't remember who.
I think Norwich hate Wolves based on someone giving them the wrong directions to Molineux that took them through the subway, ten years ago.

The Wycombe one might be Colchester? For us, we seemed to have a rivalry with Sheffield United and Bolton although they go back to early 2000s

Bolton v Wolves and Wolves v Bolton was pretty fierce on and off the pitch 1970's, 1980s, and 1990's

Crystal Palace vs Charlton
Hull City vs Middlesbrough
Leeds vs Bradford
Leyton Orient vs Colchester
Dag & Red vs Southend
Palace is an odd and interesting one. When I was living in London I went to Selhurst a couple of times and the locals were quite divided about who their rivals were. Most said Brighton and very few said Charlton which they consider a soulless club. However, one interesting opinion was one of a former TFFer (PhilD, he stopped posting ages ago) saying that the rivalry differs very much on who you are playing on a consistent basis and he considered Palace's rivals as Millwall as they were playing each other a lot at that time (late 2011 it was).
Hull City vs Middlesbrough: what? Why? What for? Surely it must have been picked randomly. Both clubs don't really have an equal. Hull is the big place of East Yorkshire while Middlesbrough is the odd-one out of the 3 North-East clubs along with Newcastle and Sunderland.
Leeds hate Man Utd with a passion, Utd don't care though. Don't think Leeds have a proper rival.
Orient as said by others don't really have anyone either. Been to a solid 5-6 games at Brisbane and back then the talk was about moving to the Olympic Stadium. They were in competition with West Ham and some of the fans had some animosity towards them (a lot of London football fans do actually, I quite like West Ham). Of course West Ham only care about Millwall.
Finally, Kim Mitten set things straight with the following post regarding Southend. No way are they rivals with D&R.

Southend v Colchester is the proper derby. Col Ewe have no other rival derby wise than Southend, they have a niggle with Wycombe from their non-league days. Orient - Southend can be tasty, but its more from the Orient side, they don't really have a derby rival as historically every other London club has been above them league wise. Southend count Col Ewe as the derby, so Orient only get a look in when they are in the same division without Col Ewe.
Daggers have no one league wise, they are quite a new team remember, after 4 teams got together to form them, I couldn't even tell you if they have a derby from non-league days - maybe Grays, but that would be a longshot.

The league club that I've always seen as utterly neutral are Gillingham. They have no historical derby, they have this weird thing with Swindon from the 70's which they still cling to a bit but Swindon just laugh at.
During our many trips you said something interesting regarding teams building up rivalry depending on how often they play a certain team. A bit like what I said about Palace and Millwall and what happened between Liverpool and Chelsea playing each other so often in the cups. I think you said something about Spurs considering West Ham as their rivals as at the time they weren't on a patch with Arsenal.
Just goes to show that things can change with time. I'm pretty sure the new generation of Chelsea fans had no idea who QPR were until they got promoted and that sort of thing.

We really need to start doing football trips again mate.

Non local rivalries is interesting. Us and Luton don't really get on, and I remember us and Hull having a bit of needle too before they got promoted loads of times and ruined it. Understandable though of course because nobody likes Luton or Hull, so what choice did we have?

As for the OP, us and Chesterfield is obviously bang on. It's the Div 4 El Clasico, in truth.

As much as you hate Accrington Stanley?

Last weekend that particular fixture went off! We came out 5-1 winners at their place, with 10 men, securing bragging rights for all the Cobblers fans at work on the Monday

It's a shame it was a bubble trip as we'd have taken more than 350

If you're ignoring Rovers, ours would be Cardiff not Swindon.

I think if we were in the same league as Aldershot, Oxford and Swindon for any serious period of time (beyond a season or two) we would easily be bigger rivals with Aldershot. More local and the fact that Aldershot still hate us now, most the time Oxford (and particularly) Swindon don't care about us at all. Though us all being in the same league will never happen..

For me, it's a tough choice between Aldershot and Oxford. I've never cared about Swindon, I have no idea why some of our fans hate them so much, never understood it.

This.I have never considered Swindon any sort of rival.I also have no clue why so many of our fans hate them. For me it is Oxford purely on the basis that it has been so long since we played Aldershot in a meaningful fixture.(There was that friendly at their place in 2001 where it kicked off big time though). Believe me amongst the older fans there is still a real hatred of Aldershot.

Last time we played Oxford back in 2004 there was a fair amount of trouble. The bus i was on ended up getting bricks thrown through the window and there was an apparent brawl in a pub. There was also trouble at our 3-0 defeat at the Manor Ground back in the 97/98 season at the main road by the ground after the game. When we were managed by Terry "the taxi Bullivant.Thankfully he resigned after this game.

QPR are in no way shape or form a rival of ours.I used to work with about 6 of their fans and none of them even considered it.The same can be said of Bournemouth and Wycombe.

That one certainly seems to be dying out. People still chant 'we only hate Wolves and Ipswich' but I don't think that's been true for the last few years. Think most people have forgotten what it was all about.

Uh, ahem. One day.

You could put Palace with Brighton and have Gillingham with Charlton for now. Lots of Kent sides league or not resent Charlton.

I do remember the bad blood between us and Bolton. No idea what started it. Probably some ugly Bolton CB gave the South Bank the finger in 1968 and the rest is legend.

It's always been Oxford for Swindon, and vice versa.

Bristol City this season is a bit intense due to the closeness of the promotion race. Rovers are a truly horrible set of fuckwits.

Looking forward to renewing acquaintance with Reading soon if only for the proximity

They do - then again a lot of Kent non-league sides view Gillingham or Charlton as rivals. Dover in particular hate Gillingham, probably because Hessentaler left Dover for the Gills. They're still dining out on their FA Cup win against Gillingham.

A single unitary authority for urban Dorset
Bournemouth would say "Scummers", but then they stole that nickname from Pompey for us. It's extremely one sided, but on the otherside we're going to be seeing more of Bournemouth in the near future than we will of Portsmouth.

Regarding Bournemouth, our 'rival' depends who you ask and what generation they're from. There is no one definitive rival, and there is no one club we particularly "hate". Reading, Brighton and yes Southampton, are all in there for different reasons. Who we would pick as top of that list will vary.

Saints fans take younger Bournemouth lads calling them 'scummers' far too seriously, they leap on that as a sign that we hate them, I guess because they usually get it from Pompey who do actually hate them. When in fact it's mostly just the kids wanting something to shout. We don't like a certain brand of Saints fan, who is in Dorset and supports Saints from his sofa. Otherwise, we have no problem and wish Saints well. We'd bloody love to beat them sometime mind.

Reading and Brighton we've generally come across on a regular basis down the decades, but neither is exactly on our doorstep, so they can't really be classed as a proper local rival and both have other clubs nearer them. Personally I've rather enjoyed our beatings (nay batterings) of Reading these last two seasons. I remember ~12 year old me standing in their away end watching our Defoe led playoff hopes get crushed by stoppage time goal, only for Reading to then disappear up the leagues for a while. That upset child within me has been placated.

Yeah, you can definitley explain it better than myself.

We've had minor differences with Reading and Brighton due to both teams not being too far away and the promotion rivals factor also coming into play. Brighton probably moreso due to Adkins and Poyet and then El-Abd the following season play acting to get Rickie Lambert his one and only red card of his career. There was also that Calderon strange business.

We don't really have any sort of rivalry with Walsall. But I see what your trying to do and its a fairly local game with a bit more spice to it.

Our traditional rivals are Chester and Wrexham. During our championship days it was Stoke. And over the last 10-15 years Port Vale has been the main one. Also have small rivalries with Shrewsbury and Tranmere. From further a field the games vs Wigan were very tasty for a few years.

In truth though were abit of a Leicester. We need Nantwich town to come into some money and rise 3 or 4 leagues.

Ours is spot on but in recent years there a call that our games against Rotherham in particular and the Sheffield clubs have been a little spicy.

Hopefully rivalries again those will continue if our on the pitch success carries on and we can avoid playing Mansfield in the near future, which we should.

Define a little spicy?

WTGR I don't find games against yourselves, Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley as anything other than a run of the mill fixture, our rivals are Sheffield United, that's it.

Just a bit of hype about it, big followings, decent atmosphere. I'd say it is seen a s a big game for us - like Sheff U is this season as the 'big one' they are far bigger than the local games v Notts County, Barnsley and Donny.

Fair enough, I can see why you think that, I nipped over to Bobs board after you'd signed Lavs on loan and saw the amount of bile aimed at both Sheffield clubs, it's a bit embarrassing isn't it?

I remember when Wigan tried to manufacture some shitty rivalry with us for a good while but we were having none of it.

Carlisle class us as their main rivals despite being 90 miles away, I think they should adopt the Pie Heads.

The Reading 'rivalry' was better when you were still in your proper historical position, league-wise, and living at Elm Park.

Everything about you now seems so manufactured.

See you next season!

And yet the only trouble in any game against them in my lifetime has been started by Swindon fans. Good try though!

As for the original list, Wycombe?! That's as random as Northampton v Accy! We've had a minor rivalry over the last few years with Charlton due to their fun bus scheme to take their happyclappers to the Valley, but we don't really hate anyone. Fulham would probably be a rivalry if we met more often, but I think it's been a decade or so since we last met.

Ours is definately Donny, horrible little club, remember a group of 20 long haired chavs trying to get a rise out of us at the friendly this year with anti-rotherham chants, bIt of a change to see a local club care.

I actually dislike Sheff United, Bradford and Chesterfield more than Wednesday although that's down to not playing them in the league for years up until this season. The 'Rotherham Owls' will never get a Rotherham fans respect no matter what mind you.
