It's worth noting that Rashid and Ali bowled superbly yesterday. It's an area of weakness in all formats of the game for England, but both of them manage to take wickets and Rashid seems to be bowling a far tighter and more accurate line than a year or so ago.

Best figures for about 30 years at headingley yesterday for a spinner

We're better now than that Australia series that is for sure. We're better now than the sa series too were progressing brilliantly why be so negative. We were brilliant in the t20 world cup too things are on the up and looking way better than ever in the one day game. Our captain is a good captain but not been in the best form for quite a while. Our spinners let us down a bit I agree but our batting is incredibly good

I'm not being negative, just don't want us getting too carried away with ourselves. We're definitely in the top tier now, in all formats, but we aren't clearly ahead of the others in LO.

You are being negative. England are fun to watch in ODI cricket for almost the first time ever. Just enjoy it.

Completely agree. We're obviously not miles ahead of everyone but we're certainly on a par with anyone in all formats. And imo are heading towards being number 1 in all formats. A couple of batting problems in the tests but if they get sorted the next 4 or 5 years well basically till Jimmy retires we could really dominate.

Kent have just given themselves a day and a half off. Now for Worcester to show some steel and a massive downpour tomorrow (if they last that long)

We need to fucking declare now 291 run lead with shit weather forecast from 4.30 onwards. Negative bastard Gillespie was same against Lancashire when we were about 200-1 and never pushed on for the win just happy to take a draw

Middlesex will win now too if play carries on for the day. Fair play to them they declared and took the gamble

Not the best batting performance so far, few soft dismissals. Missing Buttler's ability to really take it away in the final 10 overs. Stokes can play the same but needs a lot more luck to come off.

Mr negative strikes again

How's that negative? I just said it's not the best batting peformance so far..and it isn't. I wasn't being negative. What England have done in the last 18 months in ODI cricket is nothing short of staggering, it's been superb. I won't rave about us though if it's not currently necessary in the game situation to rave about us.

Edit - Strike by Stokes for 6 as we speak.

It's just a case that England have set the benchmark so high that if they aren't batting above 6/7 an over we see it as slow going.

That said we should easily be clearing 300 today and let's face it that will be more than enough to win a 50 over match against this Pakistan team

There was a time when our current total would be pushing the limit of what we'd get over 50 overs so it's a sign of how they've improved. I'd say we are looking good for at least 340 maybe more. Stokes is batting like a millionaire now and got some very big hitters still to come.

In reality we could declare now and still win.

Stokes would genuinely be so, so much better if he played the game situation a bit more. That being said, he has definetely started adding more method/thinking behind his innings, instead of coming in and just trying to attack from ball 1, he will improve over time, which says a lot considering how good he is.

I'd be wary about tempering it too much, you want him to play his natural game and I think you just have to accept he may hole out like that occasionally doing so. He's set a very good platform, with us batting down to 11 in reality he should have the license to try and dominate. Very good innings from him either way.

Woakes out as well. Thing is with the likes of Willey and Jordan still to come its not even a worry.

Some of this batting is kind of proving saddlers point about it being a disappointing batting performance. Lots of poor, unnecessary shots costing wickets

Not bad batting depth when Chris Jordan comes in at 10 though

Nah he's getting slogged.

In desperate need for a wicket here before this partnership really put them in the driving seat.

Not seen enough of Dawson over the years to really know much about him but it's inexcusable for an off-spinner to bowl such a consistently bad line

Hameed to be Cook's new partner then? Quite the contrast to Hales. I'm a fan, I just hope he can up his strike rate as he gets older because anything below 60 let alone 40 is torturous

That's gonna be a remarkably quick rise. I've not actually seen much of him but they've been talking about him for years and his record this season is phenomenal. He definitely will improve his strike rate - he's never struggled to score boundaries but he wasn't getting many ones and twos and he was scoring either 0 or 4 from every ball - that's been changing recently so he seems to be learning to manipulate it a bit more. I think his record in one day cricket has always been pretty good in age group cricket.

I'm really worried that a call up might be a bit early for him but he's obviously got the ability and temperament.

Is that a 6 wicket debut for Dom Bess? Sure I heard it's his first appearance before start of play.
