I'm generally baffled by the appeal of Final Fantasy, but to be honest I imagine fans of 1FF are baffled by the game I like too.

depends when you first tried to play it. the turnbased combat seems a little quaint by today's standards. it follows a similar timeframe to a good book in the sense that it might take a few hours for you to get into it; if it succeeds you're hooked, but some people don't make it past the first couple of chapters.

I quite liked the turn based combat in South Park The Stick of Truth, that's about it in terms of turn based RPG's. I liked other RPG's like Fallout, Witcher and Dragon age. The main thing that turns me off it really is the Japanese art style and story, reminds me of anime's, which I have only ever liked 1 of.

It has anime flourishes here and there but, as someone who isn't into that genre, I found them bearable and they're only a tiny part of a series that seems infatuated with European fantasy narratives and settings on the whole. Actually calling it any one thing does a disservice to the series. Every instalment is different and draws upon a range of different cultural aesthetics: from the medieval kingdoms of FF9 and urban metropolis in FF7 to the pacific villages in FF10.
