Legendary former Tranmere boss Johnny King has sadly passed away. The great man led Tranmere from the brink of non league oblivion to the doors of the premier league with multiple visits to Wembly along the way.
Johnny also turned Alliance premier league outfit Northwich Victoria into a force to be reckoned with, with success at the twin towers as well as turning Welsh minnows Caernarfon town into giant killers.
The man was a true gentleman on and off the pitch and always had time for the kids playing football in the park.
Hope your mates Harry McNally and Bill Shankly are waiting for you at tha pearly gates with your favourite tipple.
RIP Johnny King.

When we played Tranmere recently in the County Cup we sat in the stand opposite the Johnny King Stand and I turned to my mate and asked if he was still alive. I remember going to Prenton park in the 1960s and it was pretty rundown. When King took over Tranmere were in a sad state. They've had an owner from North America called Osterman and it was around that time that King came in and transformed the club. They began producing players that went on to have careers at the top of the English game. Our most successful manager was a man called Ken Roberts, who got us our first ever promotion in 1975. He was at the club on Saturday and although he's in his mid 80s still looks very fit and well. I certainly hope that Tranmere can make the play-offs and win them, because you have the best ground, crowds and don't belong down here.

I only caught the tail end of Johnny King's reign at Tranmere so missed the promotions and was too young to really appreciate the magnitude of taking a fourth division relegation fodder side to the brink of the Premier League.

We may be in a crap position now but the thought of where we'd be without Johnny King is scary. Hopefully we get a big turn out tomorrow to show their appreciate for the great man!

RIP The King!

His greatest strength was to get mediocre players who had done nothing before and turn them into stars.

Eric nixon...... Accident prone at city
Dave higgins.... From non league
Steve vickers.... Brilliant spot playing for spennymoor
Mark mccarrick.....from non league
Ronnie moore..... Converted from centre forward
Mark hughes.... From non league
Eddie bishop.... From non league
Jimmy harvey..... Languishing at hereford
Johnny morrissey.... Underachieving at our place
Dave martindale.... From non league
Ian muir.... Underachieving at our place
Jim steel...... His marque signing
Chris malkin.... From barclays bank

The backbone of the squad that took us from the bottom of 4 up into div 2 .
Add on the players he developed through our youth system:

Kenny irons, ged brannon, ian moore, tony thomas, shaun garnett.

Johnny had no coaching badges and no great tactical awareness but what he had was the ability to make everyone inside and outside football he met feeling 10 foot tall.... A true legend

Fantastic manager-- Remember when we played you at Wembley in 1990.

I am old enough (and some might say ugly enough) to remember the whole of JK`s reign at Prenton Park. I honestly believe that we, had in the early Nineties, quite possibly the best footballing team to never play in the Premiership. If only the people of the Wirral had got behind them in the numbers they deserved. Kingy himself was a very modest man, a instantly likeable man who those of us who had the pleasure of meeting him will tell you that 5 minutes in his company made you feel like he was a lifelong friend. He truly loved the club and the club, from the directors, players, staff right down to the cleaning lady loved him but nobody loved him more than the fans. He was, and still is, Mr Tranmere. The true King of Prenton Park and I admit I was fighting back the tears on Thursday morning when I hear the sad news of his passing. Today is going to be probably the most emotional day in the clubs history as the SWA gather, hopefully in huge numbers, to say a fond farewell to the man who took us "on a trip to the Moon"
