Ridiculously epic spaghetti western. Almost perfect. Virtuosic.

Quién sabe? (A Bullet for the General) (1967)

Excellent zapata western with an evil mercenary American, Klaus Kinski as a priest and a captivating performance from Gian Maria Volontè.

Volonte was great in those spaghetti westerns, you couldn't take your eyes off his gorgeous eyes (if I do say so myself!).

That the first time you've seen The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Stevie? I've seen it hundreds of times; the main fight at the end is just so operatic, its one of the great moments in all film. And Morricone's score is quite simply one of the best ever created.

gives me goosebumps every time I see the movie and hear this epic soundtrack. Clint at his best and Eli Wallach too (always have to laugh about him because "Wallach" is the german name for a gelded/castrated horse )

Aye, what a cast, Clint at his coolest (up there with Connery, Bogart, Marvin and McQueen for coolness on screen); Wallach the great character actor who only died a few years back in his mid-nineties; and the great Lee van Cleef being awesome as always.

Castrated horse though lol! Poor Eli!

Just looked that up, its from a Scottish director (who did the decent Starred Up). Turns out his next film is going to be about Robert the Bruce, with Chris Pine(!?!) in the lead role!

Havnae seen Starred Up, will have to add it to the list. Got quite the backlog to go through though. Pine was excellent in Hell or High Water but can't say I'm a massive fan generally, surely the director knows what he's doing if he's a Scot though (hopefully, maybe)? HoHW Is written by the same geezer who wrote Sicario, which is what lead me to it. Another top watch that.

Heard good things about Sicario, but never fancied it. May look out Hell Or High Water though. I do really like Pine, he has a lot of charisma about him; but I just thought for a film about a Scottish king by a Scottish director, we'd have a Scottish actor (Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy, Richard Madden etc) to play him and not an American. Though it laughably did work with Mel Gibson as Wallace tbf!

I remember watching a movie about Robert the Bruce, starring Oliver Reed, in the aftermath of the Braveheart movie. Must have been mid-90's.
And, coincidentally, I came across a trilogy from Robyn Young for my ebook reader about Robert the Bruce and wanted to start this at the weekend.

I've seen parts of that Oliver Reed film, but if I remember its not very good.

I give his statue a cheery wave everytime I go home as I'm residing in the town now where he composed the Declaration of Independence (and I believe there will be big celebrations here in two years time on the 700th anniversary of it). I've got a family connection to him too, which I find is bloody awesome!

I didn't read anything so far from her but googled a bit. She's teaching creative writing at university, it seems.

Anyway, the trilogy didn't cost me a cent so, as we say in Germany "einem geschenkten Gaul schaut man nicht ins Maul" (maybe: Don't look a gift horse in the mouth)

I tried reading her Crusader series a couple of years ago it read like books written for thick children rather than adults it was aimed it i made it to about 100 pages.
On a good note the headaches have improved and my eyesight has improved so i can read again As i read at least 4 hours a day it was depressing me missing out on something i love doing, it's just fatigue that's affecting me know Dirk a side effect of the stroke and could last for a long time but i'll take that as things could have been much worse,hope all is well with you mate

I watched Solo. Good beginning and ending, but pretty nondescript in the middle. Some fun features, but certainly the weakest of the new generation of movies.

I watched Death Wish (2018) last night and really wished I hadn't bothered, Bruce Willis played the part of the aggrieved husband whose wife was murdered - a film for vigilante types.

Another classic epic in the vein of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I didn't think it was quite as good as that one, it lacked the cool and the expertly-crafted set-pieces that made that one so great.

Volontè is fantastic again, this time as a lecturer turned outlaw - slowly succumbing to gang life and the appeal of power.

I'll be watching El Topo tonight (perhaps tenuous to include this on a western binge, I dunno - might as well go out with a surreal, multi-coloured bang) before moving on from westerns to poliziotteschi films.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Aye I remember it being decent, if not a lot dragged out. Bronson was a good protagonist, but Fonda stole the show. I don't think he ever played a baddie before, but he was a menacing bastard in that.

And Morricone's music again, what can I say!

Been a long time since I've seen this, may have to look it out again.

Pawn Sacrifice (2015)

A decent performance from Tobey Maguire as Bobby Fischer, who probably is still considered by many as the greatest chess player off all time. Strange bloke Fischer very disturbed. - 7/10

Passengers (2016)

Very disappointing at best, and problematic at worst. Passengers was like watching Titanic in space, Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt just couldn't make it work in this cheesy disastrous movie. - 3/10

A dark and at times disturbing western starring Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning both of who'm were superb,not a film for those who don't like blood and violence. 8.5/10.

Journey's End (2018)
A dull British film about our soldiers in the trenches in Northern France during the Spring of 1918 in WWI. Fuck all happened until the last 10 minutes except the men arguing among themselves. Now i get there were tensions with everyone on edge but this film overdid it,shame really as it was a solid British cast and i was looking forward to watching it. 4.5/10.

A dark and at times disturbing western starring Guy Pearce and Dakota Fanning both of who'm were superb,not a film for those who don't like blood and violence. 8.5/10.

No hiding in this film i thought when i saw it WTF!! The film is a good representation of psychopathy.

It was hard to watch at times, i'm no fan of Pearce usually but i thought he was bloody brilliant as the sick in the head preacher.
