Anyone else watching this on BBC? I think we're 6 eps deep now, it's my favourite show on TV at the moment. That might be because I'm a huge Bernard Cornwell fan and I've read pretty much all his books, but hey, I still love it.

I have read a lot of Cornwell books, but I really couldn't get into this. I've tried the first one a couple of times and got around half way through at one point, but kept losing interest. And it's rare for me to start a book and not finish it. I must make the effort again, perhaps it improves once you get a few books in. As such I'll avoid the TV program for the time being.

I'm loving the TV programmes, read all the books as well. A solid effort by the BBC.

I think it's alright. Passes an hour a week nicely enough.

It's good but nowhere as good as the books. The Last Kingdom is the story in the first 2 novels, the BBC must be thinking of making more because i'm on the 9th in the series plus Uhtred's story needs to be told in full not just his early life.

It's a good show, nice to have some more shows in the "Dark Ages"/Early Medieval period, especially some which show things from a non-Viking exclusive perspective.

Agreed we need more shows like this, something on Hastings and the aftermath with The English rebels in East Anglia led by Hereward fighting to oppose Norman rule would be a good watch.I've read loads of books on the subject and it's an enthralling story.

6 episodes in now and I can't help but hate the main character, I keep hoping he'll get chopped in half in battle.

In the books Uhtred is nothing like he's portrayed in the series. For a start he's a big long blond haired and long bearded warrior, probably the worst casting i've seen and takes shit from nobody.

Had heard of the book series by Bernard Cornwell (think it might have been from here actually) so when I saw this was on thought I'd check it out. Very impressed. Really good characterisation and considering it's on a relatively low budget it really immersed you in the time and the medieval nature of it all. And that final battle was BRUTAL. Great news a 2nd series is already confirmed.

As it's always the case with everything that the books are far better I really need to get round to giving them a read.

Really enjoyed that, glad there is a second season. It'll be interesting to see how it goes with seemingly a few off the more established characters being "left behind" in Wessex so to speak.

I've been recommending the books on here for a while mate they're a fantastic read,i'm on the 9th and the 10th should be out late next year.
?Had i not read the books first i know i'd have loved this but the casting was poor except for Alfred and they changed so many things. Pedantic i know but in the books Uhtred's motto was "Fate is inexorable" not "Destiny is all" The battle scenes were good and realistic so i reckon it's worth 6/10 that would have been higher as i say had i not read the books before watching the show.

Yeah that's understandable, I'm a bit like that with the more recent series of Game of Thrones. Try hard not to be that guy, but it can be so frustrating!

I'm midway through the Wheel of Time series atm (got 7 or 8 books to go) so may be a little while before I get round to it but they're definitely on the to-do list!
