Been watching Bolton there numerous times...Old and new.....Principality Stadium is a much better day out.

Allianz Arena in a European night......I have been spoiled. Tranmere or Mansfield away in the Micky mouse cup does nothing for me anymore.

13 years ago you lot drew 2-2 away v Bayern! Fuck me that was quite a result.

I wonder how many leagues below you Salford City were back then? Now they're the favourites going into Fridays big game..

Salford kicked about in the North West Counties back then. So no i cannot give a toss about these cups, be honest most managers dont. They use it to give reserve players a game.
I dont really care if you get 10k a game its not going to affect me if Bolton had won the cup or went out straight away.
League games are all that matter and to be honest they have been a major let down. We have 6 or 7 players that are excellent at this level 4 or five standard players and about 10 that are pinching a living

The same could be said about Portsmouth and Wigan who both were in Europe earlier in the millennia and a few years later found themselves in financial difficulty and tumbling down the pyramid into League 2.

You will find Wigan have not yet gone down into league 2 since they played in Europe

Give it 6 months... they were awful against our second string in the paint pot, worst EFL side I’ve seen us face (until we met Southend)

Relegation is a certainty, just like it was for us last season.....I think they may go the way of Bury and Macclesfield

Wigan are a traditional non league club though that were only formed in 1932. Wouldn't put them in the same bracket as Bolton or Bury. They are just dropping back down to their natural level.

Been saying this for years. Crowds of 2,000-3,000 before their rise too. Took about 85 to Spurs on a Saturday one year when they were in the Prem. Traditionally a smaller club than a lot at this level.

While you are correct about Bolton....Bury never had a good fan base and have always batted above there average

My wife supports Norwich, I saw Wigan at Carrie Road a few years ago and they had the tiniest slither at the end of one stand (like 4 seats wide). They’re a small club really.

To be fair the town and most of Wigan are a Rugby league base....The football team fan base is made up from the outlying areas such as Ince, Parbold and Standish etc

I remember Wigan as a non league club in the 70’s and they had better support than many a div 4 team of the time. Early 80’s they regularly attracted crowds of 6/7000 to Springfield park which was really good for the time.

When we beat them at the old Springfield Park in the POs in the late 80s the away end was a grassy bank- we ripped up loads of it, chucking it all over the place. God knows what that was like after a couple of days rain.

No seriously.
On a side note, the first league game I ever saw between ourselves at Burnden park there were little over 3500 and Bolton got promoted that season. Bolton won 2-0, John Thomas got at least one of the goals.

We beat Villa's kids 3-1 this evening. It was a dead rubber as we're both out already and a competition nobody cares about, and we did make 9 changes to our last league team with only Omari Patrick and Gavin Reilly remaining (neither of whom are nominally in our best XI).

One good thing though is that all three of our strikers who have yet to get off the mark bagged goals tonight. Toure, Reilly and Obiero scoring for us. OK Toure has actually scored in this competition before but nevertheless it's good when your strikers score goals because it might become a habit. All three of them have no goals in the league yet, and all three of them have spurned some good chances in league games, and we could really do with someone other than Jon Mellish scoring regularly.

Apologies to FGR for sending them through due to us thrashing the throstles.
Three goals from academy products and we looked good, but I dont think WBA could be arsed.

West Brom kids looked absolutely shit. They got off pretty lightly only losing 4-0. Lucky for them we didn't play our first team...

Shambles by us last night, our best available team lost 3-0 to Hull reserves, it was an embarrassing watch.

I think our side ate the Papa-Joe Pizza's in the changing room before the game, looked like it anyway. They had 'the sides' at half-time!

Having now lost in the first round of every competition, I don't have to shell out £10:00 for any more cup games this season.

17 year old Nelson Iseguan and 19 year old Chiek Diabate made their pro debuts for us last night. Both look like they will get plenty of first team action in the next couple of years. Much rather see these players get games rather than signing free agents just to fill up the squad.

Think also Dave Whelan put a lot of effort and money into getting Warriors fans to take an interest in football... don't think it was entirely successful but probably helped boost their attendances a bit.

Used to be a lot better before they messed around with the format and let B-teams in, but besides the money for winning the whole point of the competition was the possibility of going to Wembley, everything else was just a preamble to that. Even a few of the bigger clubs' fans got some enjoyment out of the competition before it was broken, Portsmouth, Coventry and Birmingham come to mind. Back when the competition still had some integrity it could be a day to remember for fans of clubs like Carlisle, or a reminder that things are getting better for fans of clubs like Coventry.

Loved this competition as did the town. We brought nearly 28k to Wembley when we beat Torquey
Would proberbly not take 12k if we got there now

Some great times for Vale before the B teams, won it twice, taking the trophy from down the road on both occasions, beat Stoke en route to the final both times too, including a golden goal winner at the Britannia.

When relegated from the second tier we had a poor start to the season in 2000/01 but this cup got us going and we went on a crazy run (1 loss in about 22 games).

First team to win a trophy at the Millennium Stadium in normal time and was a cracking day out, also gave us our first ever Wembley visit in 1993 (ironically the second was a week later in the play off final!).

Shame they ruined it. Although the Stoke U21 game was absolutely nuts and a reminder of what we have missed.
