They removed the Borough on promotion to the EFL

Apparently the football league has an age old rule that says the name 'Borough' is forbidden. That's why Middles Borough had to change their name and why Scarborough (who refused to change it) were liquidated.

I'm hoping Clough won't have had the time to sort them out yet but you'd expect a bit of a bounce at least unfortunately.

I dunno what to expect yet, but the two games before Clough came in we did improve quite a lot under the caretaker manager Cooper, I reckon we will at least have a go tomorrow.

I'm guessing it won't go well for Irthlingborough Diamonds or Knaresborough Town if they ever get promoted to the Football League in that case!

The third in a run of 4 really tough league games. So far we’ve lost 1 and won 1 but played really well in the win over Newport.

Cheltenham looked an excellent side last season. Without Kayode (away on international duty) who is an important part of our team, it might be a step too far for us.

Narrow defeat. Carlisle 0-1 Cheltenham. But nothing to be overly concerned about.
What'll happen is we'll generally dominate the game without doing a lot, finally take the lead only to concede four minutes later, and you'll grab a late winner once we've tired. That's been the theme of our last couple of away games anyway!

I can't imagine why Port Vale would want to chainge their name to that...they are located in Burslem...totally different place!

Tough game on Saturday but you can say that most weeks really. To me Tranmere have a squad that should be looking at a top 10 finish and I expect that to now be fully over their poor start. If they're confident and actually come to play football and attack us though then that will suit us all day long, as that's when we're at our best. I'd be much more worried if Tranmere had lost the last few and we're coming to Vale Park just to spoil and get men behind the ball, as if we don't get our noses in front we can really struggle and huff and puff.

Oyeleke will start and he makes a huge difference for us. I'd be tempted to play McKirdy too if he's fit as he has that bit of extra quality that most League Two players don't, but expect to see Amoo and Worrall out wide with Cullen up top. Pope, McKirdy, Robinson and Rodney gives us excellent options off the bench - If only Askey would give his subs more than 10 minutes!

A draw wouldn't surprise me at all but hopefully we'll win by the odd goal, either 1-0 or 2-1. If we're not up for this game all things considered along with the FA Cup exit which was shocking then the players and manager need something long, wide and sharp inserted into their collective rectums.

How many teams have never changed their name though?
We’ve always been Port Vale but originally was Burslem Port Vale (think we had a little spell as Hanley Port Vale too)

And Cobridge Church, apparently.

Btw tonight's big match should actually be Christ Church v Salford Central Mission if the two clubs hadn't been tinpot and changed their names.

Just been double-checking and it appears we've always been Cheltenham Town since formation in 1887.

That being said, this is a club that wasn't even certain when it was formed, everyone believing it was 1892 (to the extent we had centenary in 1992) only for it to be noted as 1887 about 15 years ago, meaning we celebrated out 125th anniversary 20 years after our centenary.

We used to be Poulton Wanderers. Poulton being the village by the sea from where Morecambe developed, and was named, in the mid 19th century. The original Poulton Wanderers were closely bred fishermen and pig farmers and decided to relocate to Horwich in the 1870s and took over a local sports pitch near there at Christ Church.

Bolton became a bastardisation of Poulton and the nickname the Trotters from their affectionate association with pigs.

Interestingly, Harold Kay who was secretary of the club at the time, later recalled that because of their squat and chubby appearance and their constant sweating demeanor they had to move to South Lancashire where they fit in much more easily. I believe there are still Kays in the Horwich area but correct me if I'm wrong.

Crawley Town first played in 1890 but only in friendly games. We did not play a competitive game u till 1896. However, owing to now mentioned tinpottedness, we did change our name to Crawley Rangers and Crawley Athletic before realising how horrible that sounded and changing back.

Masi51 goes on about Exeter's record of not winning much. Try ours! As far as I can tell the first league we won was The Southern League in 2003/2004. It does mean we have held the largest trophy in senior football...the Southern League shield is massive! We have only won one other league since and have only ever been relegated twice (we did win the AGM Cup once). Mid table tinpotsextraordinaire.

Here endeth the lesson.

That shield is massive - this was from when we won it in 1985:

When we won the Southern League in 98 it took a lot of effort trying to fit that shield it into our chairman's car.

Like you say, it's bloody massive.

Unless my Geography is wrong Poulton is a village town on the Wyre outside Blackpool
You need to do a lot better at your wind ups to get to my standard
Christ church was no where near horwich but hey why spoil a good yarn.
The Kays are still frequented in the Bolton area, but you will find they are two seperate Breeds
We have the long thin ones found in the Horwich Blackrod area these are known as the Vernon Kays.
Then we have the Small robust ones found in the Deane area these are known as the Lesser spotted Peter Kays

Clash of the Sweeney brothers tomorrow, Dan v Ryan. First time they've come up against each other according to Dan.

It is a pity that one of them isn't called Todd...but I guess they would cop a lot of abuse if they were, in a roundabout sort of way!

Bratfud away. We never seem to do well there. I'd normally be happy with a point but we have drawn too many already so we should just throw caution to the wind and go for it.
