Picked up MGS for a tenner the other day. Slightly frustrating.

I'd take it back saying you hadn't realised you already had it digital. Or something along those lines.

I went to my friends house yesterday and he was playing Viva Pinata and now I want this fucking collection.

Viva Pinata is the only game among them I've ever played. Everybody always fanboys the living fuck out of Conkers Bad Fur Day so I want to check that out, plus Banjo Kazooie. BUT I WANT THIS MAINLY FOR VIVA PINATA. The rest is just icing.

Oaf, i'll be honest with you. I have never played any of the games included in RR.

I fancy Battletoads and Grabbed by the ghoulies, they look fun.

Why are they drip-feeding backwards compatibility? Is it a complex process to make games backwards compatible? [or should that be forwards compatible?] Or are they just keeping everyone wanting more?

They're effectively having to make an emulator for each and every game they're making compatible, it'd be impossible to make a straight up 360 emulation at this point purely with software, as it would require too many resources (see how much you need to emulate ps2 on a pc compared to the original's hardware), so essentially they're having to make the game run on the xbone rather than making the xbox 360 work for the xbone, if that makes sense...

Thanks for explaining. I get what you're saying at a basic level, without understanding any of the technical reasons why it's the case. That's more my lack of expertise though.

Am I then right in thinking it was an oversight for them to not include backwards compatibility from the outset?

If I remember rightly the 360 played all first gen Xbox games on release. Wouldn't it have been easier to do the same here? Or would they still have had the same problems?

The 360 didn't play them at first, you had to update it to be able to, and it still to this day doesn't play every title. Will be a similar situation with the xbone I'd say. But yeah, I think it was an oversight in that they didn't expect there to be such a large demand for backwards compatibility, but now that they have realised this, they've decided to do it.

Don't own an Xbone but would buy this if I had one.

The first 7 games were made by Ultimate Play The Game back in the days of my old ZX Speccy and are absolute classics. All groundbreaking at the time and those alone are worth the 20 quid.

Really?

I have both PS4 and Xbox One, and The XB1 exclusive line up is Heavvvvvvvy

It's nice that you can afford that luxury (or sad, I'm not sure which), but the majority can't. The PS4 is catering a lot better to gamers who enjoy narrative-driven, single-player titles, though, which is why it's generally outselling the XB1. Most gamers don't do multiplayer or online. I know both of those things are considered sacrosanct to the more fanatical sections of Microsoft's consumer base, but in a world where any given game won't even be completed by 95% of the people who buy it, the concept of a console war is something that really only exists in the minds of those who have taken to buying into the brand, rather than the experience, of video games. Exclusivity doesn't benefit the consumer, it only benefits corporations. Don't buy into the bullshit. If you own both consoles, just be happy that you are one of the few privileged people who can enjoy everything this generation has to offer.

I'd say that the reason PS4 has sold more units than XB1 is because at launch it was way cheaper and available in more countries, but yeah they do focus more on single player stuff. "Most gamers don't do multiplayer or online" That is an assumption. The online community is massive, even the PC stuff like LOL, Dota and stuff there a millions of gamers that play online.

I bought the PS4 cheap second hand, £200. I'm not well off by any means. I'm keeping the PS4 for the naughty dog stuff mainy.
The Xbox one for Halo/Gears etc. There are some really nice games single player exclusives coming to Xbox One next year too

As another one of these lucky pricks with both, I can't really say that there is much between the two. I mean, I've had a PS4 for months now but both games I've owned for it (Batman and MGS V) are multi platform, I've never felt compelled to try out any of the exclusives that have come out to date. Meanwhile, there aren't many Xbox One exclusives that I'd call essential either... I mean, ok, well yeah, personally I'd have The Master Chief Collection down as one, but I get that you have to be a super Halo fanboy like me who just wants to drown in all things Halo for that to appeal. Neither console has an exclusive game that gives them a real edge over the other yet in that department, in my view.

Halo 5 and Uncharted 4 will be the games to start that ball really rolling...

I own both and hardly use both except for Netflix and the odd flutter on GTA.

Plenty of games to come out in the future to make it worthwhile, in my opinion the PS4 is superior in many, many ways but majority of my friends have the XB1 so I eventually got that to enjoy some multiplayer.

I have the Xbox One for three reasons, Fifa, Halo and my friends have it. It does everything I want it to do, and generally does it well.

I used to be really into the console wars but when I matured a little bit I stopped giving a shit, just play what you think is best. It's very likely I will get a PS4 later down the line when it is cheap, because really the only games that interest me on the PS is Naughty Dog games. But between my Xbox One and my PC there isn't anything I need a PS4 for. Games that are single player that I enjoy like Fallout, Telltale etc... I can play on my PC at a smooth framerate with mods and shorter loading screens, whereas casual or multiplayer titles I get on my Xbox for the community aspect - I love it.

Fair enough, but the 'most players don't don't do multiplayer or online' thing isn't an assumption it's a statistical fact. Most people you know might be gamers, but millions upon millions bought new generation consoles and the majority are not part of the quote unquote 'gamer community'. They are people who have other responsibilities or hobbies who splurged on a console to either play very occasionally, or only to play certain titles while juggling other responsibilities. Gamers engaged in any sort of active discourse, whether XBonline/PS4online, blogosphere or forumers are a tiny, tiny fraction of gamers as a whole.
