We had this thread over on TFF. Let's see what stuff we can add to it this time.

1. Under water levels. Has there ever been a well designed underwater game? Also, fuck Ecco the Dolphin.

2. Button mashing sequences. Some of my fave games of all time are guilty of this (Resident Evil 4). I just don't find it enjoyable and it makes my wrist/fingers hurt.

3. QTE's. I don't mind them if they're kept to a minimum, but an entire game made up of them? Get out.

4. That Dwarf in Golden Axe

5. Unskippable cutscenes. Especially when they're stupidly long.

Sonic 06, what must be the bane of gaming. It was so bad it was good.

Game companies who constantly bring out broken games and then bring out patches 6 months later. Specifically looking at EA/Ubisoft here

Cut-scenes is a good shout, I wanted to play the game not watch some useless 5 min video which doesn't change a thing. If they change the game though, fair enough.

Music in games, we really should be having power metal music for the final boss as it would make it 100x better.

On that note boss battles where you hit them 3 times where they have a massive hit box and die. What's the challenge in that.

In response to yours Cas:

1) Bioshock? Not what you meant, I'm sure, but still a well designed underwater game :hesk:

2) Yup, but it was cool at the end of MGS4.

3) QTE heavy games can actually be great if they're well written. See: The Walking Dead (well any of telltales stuff), Beyond, Heavy Rain, ect.

4) Fuck anybody who isn't the blue barbarian dude.

5) YES. Especially when they're before hard ass boss fights and losing the boss fight means watching it again.

The dwarf in Golden Axe was great!

Definitely agree with water sections though, the flooded section in MGS2 was a nightmare when Raiden had to navigate it. Then EE came along...

Poorly placed checkpoints is another one. Particularly when you have a long boring stretch just before a difficult part meaning that failure dooms you to replay the laborious part.

I thought the QTEs were easily the worst part of the Walking Dead series, particularly because, in a game that made your choices matter so often, the consequences were usually just your avergae failure state.

Also, those QTEs towards the end of MGS4 were indefensible.

-games that equate brooding characters and grittiness with maturity and depth (see Gears of War, Call of Duty)

-the lack of faith or respect developers have for players to figure things out for themselves.

-reboots and sequels that might well be functional, sometimes even fun, games in and of themselves but ignore or shit on the qualities that made their series so appealing to begin with (Tomb Raider 2012 trying to replicate Uncharted's success, REs 5&6 descent into abject action bollocks).

Games which want to be like cinematic experiences and so set the pace on short scripted segments where if you don't tow the line exactly how they created it you're either too fucking far behind or too far in front and are likely killed through no fault of your own.

Trailing missions.

Don't get too close or they'll notice you!

Don't get too far behind, you're losing them!

Horrible things.

Pre order bonuses that lock out content, especially like they have in the states where different stores get different pre order bonuses.

Agree with the pre-order bonuses especially, I can never get SSJ4 Vegeta on Xenoverse now just because I didn't pre-order a game without knowing if it was to be a crock of shit or not.

He's free if you register your game on the namco bandai site. They give you enough points to get him as a reward

They should put underwater levels in Fifa (only game I play).

I love playing Total War but I hate it when they release titles which arent working properly and they expect paying customers to do the game testing for them so they can release a patch! Grrr

Undertow on the 360 was half decent. Even better considering I got it for free on an Xbox Live giveaway.

Third-person exploration at less than 30fps: a massive chore. The Witcher III just about gets a pass cos it's otherwise pretty immersive, but framerate issues are definitely stopping me having as much fun as I should have cos barring technical limitations it's excellent, bet

Is it just me who really doesn't care about the FPS of games..? If it's a good game, it's a good game, as long as it doesn't lag due to framerate issues, I couldn't care less.

Having your fps running at half of your monitors refresh rate is a bad thing... sceen tearing, input lag etc. Especially in first person games. Basically looks like a slideshow. But if you're used to 30fps (and if you're a console gamer, you most certainly will be) then it wont bother you I guess. 30fps @ <1080p is pretty much standard for console games anyway.

The real question is why, in 2015, with consoles costing £3/400, is this even an issue?

I am a console gamer, looking to put together the cash to get a decent pc however. So perhaps I'll see the difference in future.

Good stuff. I'll admit I'm somewhat of a snob when it comes to fps but as I say, if you play at 30fps alll the time it generally wont bother you unless it blatantly stutters or tears. But still, you'd expect modern games to meet a 60hz refresh rate with ease.
